Default can a doctor actually do this?

My dad went to walgreens today to pick up his xanax. The pharmacist said that she didn't think taking xanax, prosom, and oxycodone together (throughout the day) was safe and said she was going to call his doctor and say something to him. My dad has been on all of these meds since like 94 and hasn't had any complications. He takes the pain pills for his degenerative disk disease, the xanax is for his restless leg syndrome (nothing else works besides xanax) and the prosom is for him to try and get some sort of sleep at night. He needs all of the meds he's currently taking and said he would probably kill himself if his doctor takes him off these meds because he doesn't want to live the rest of his life in agony. A pharmacist is not a doctor (all they do is dispense pills) so would a doctor actually listen to this bitch pharmacist?

Im just looking for some advice on what to do? thanks...

If the doctor says it's fine, it's fine. She is probably checking just to make sure it's not a mistake. Theoretically it could be a dangerous combination. Does she know he has been on them for years?

How did that turn out? I assume they did the Johnson-style intervention with the deceit, sob story then blackmail.

yes he talked with her over the phone before he went and got his meds and told her how long he has been on this same exact medication.
-----------------------
WL, And yes my dad is addicted to the pills but he doesn't have any other choice but to take the pills because his pain is so bad. with degenerative disk disease the pain gets worse and worse as time goes by, look it up! he also is seeing another doctor for his high blood pressure. He doesn't even catch a nod on it, it's only for his pain...

Oxydust, you're lucky your dad is even getting the meds.

My cousin is married, has a kid, does jobs that are physically demanding and he has scoliosis.

He doesn't have any meds. Why? His bitch of a wife wont let him see a doctor or some shit because they're "addicting". Thank your mom for being so understanding.

a pharmacist is not JUST a technician. That is what they have a PHARMACY TECHNICIAN FOR. A pharmacist requires just as much schooling than a doctor if not more and they probably know more about mixing medications than any doctor.

Well if the pharmacist didn't know the whole story about his degenerative disk issues then yeah, it would look suspicious. I think a pharmacist may have quite a bit of power actually; they can be on the lookout for lazy/rushed/shady doctors who either unintentionally screw up a PX in their haste and overlook allergies, etc or who may be too generously prescribing narcotics to everyone.

They will also notice patients who are doctor hopping for narcotics and/or screwing their insurance companies. Just a thought.

Yes pharmacists do know their shit. They are well versed in pharmaclolgy and drug interactions. They also save a lot of lives by doing exactly this and just making sure that the doctor is aware of the possible interctions.

On the other hand, this lady is kind of overstepping if all of the meds are prescribed by the same doc and have been for a long time. Is this the first time he has had his scripts filled at this pharmacy? If so then she's probably just checking and wont interfere in the future.

They really have no fucking say in things...

Fuck, have you ever tried to call a doctor to try and get them to stop prescribing someone medications?

when you have a mom that has been to rehab twice, arrested twice, doctor shops, goes through thousands of pills a year, and nods off in public while taking every class of narcotics because she isn't happy with her life, these things become necessary so you don't have a dead mom... but i know that the day she stops taking pills is the day they kill her.... benzos, barbs, and opiates, one of these days its gonna happen, unless of course she has a seizure from benzo withdrawal in the bathtub or something and drowns, or wrecks a car again when she gets her license back from the last arrest...

So you call up a doctor and tell them to stop and they bascially say something along the lines of "doctor patient confidentiality sorry i cant say anything to you, im prescribing her what she needs".... and i imagine the pharmacist will get a similar response....

No, he has had them filled there a few times in the past. I don't think he was dealing with the same pharmacist this time though.

The pharmacist has no legal authority to deny someone medication they've been prescribed. However, they do have the authority to confirm your prescription(s) with the doctor who issued them. A doctor does have this authority, however. I'm fairly certain that a doctor wouldn't revoke any of the prescriptions based off-of one query from a supermarket pharmacist, especially on a once-off basis. The doctor could consider revising the prescriptions, but if s/he's the one who originally issued them, I doubt they would - unless of course there were evident signs of negative side effects, which, from what you've told us - it doesn't sound like there are.

I wouldn't worry about it, and if you continue having problems with the pharmacist, just go elsewhere or ask to speak to their supervisor, indicating that this pharmacist has been giving you trouble - and that both you and your doctor are aware of the situation.

They can and will fucking do it. The doctor makes the last call though, but yea the pharmacist has the authority to call into question the safety of someone's medication regimen.

and pharmacists aren't doctors but they probably know MORE about the drugs than the doc.

so.. to all of you who talked out your ass about pharmacists like you knew what you were talking about.. tsk tsk, i shouldn't really trust anything i read on here i realize.

and the pharmacist isn't trying to give anyone a hard time, if it's a new pharmacist he doesnt very well know the whole story eh? The doctor will probably tell her it's A-OK and it'll be fine.

I thought that part of being a pharmacist is to notice if a patient is taking drugs that would have bad/dangerous interactions, in case the doctor didn't notice.

Yes, they can do this.

And jamaciaiaciaia, you just fucking suck.

it makes me feel like a hypocrite, but honestly i don't want her fucking up my life any more than it already is, killing one of us or herself in the process...

you ever watched someone drive on large amounts of xanax and hydrocodone.....

She had to drive me to an MRI about an hour away a couple weeks after a bad car wreck... with the constant passing out at the wheel while going 70 down the interstate, running off the road every couple of minutes, and only managing to knock down 1 mail box on the way home im surprised we both didn't die in a car crash....

about a year ago i had no car for some reason and needed a ride from school to work.... she decides to get fucked up and cant pick me up and notifies me in my last class of the day so i have no time to ask friends... So i rode the bus home and made it to work more than an hour late...

The last time she got arrested she got fucked up before picking me and my sister up from school.... On the way she got into an accident, cops were called, they noticed she was nodding out, failed sobriety test, her purse was searched and they found various pills out of container...

my 18th birthday dinner, she was passing out in the middle of it.... I finished my steak and left.

On the way to court for a traffic ticket after her last time in rehab she was saying "im really wanting to commit to it this time, i want to quit" and then she hit a car at the court house... luckily the police didn't even have to be called as they were standing less than 10 feet away... She got fucked up shortly after that....

I have no problem with recreational drug use, but there is a point where it becomes a problem... I have seen the insurance records for all the pharmaceuticals prescribed from January to November. most of the family has a few, my mothers covers 5 pages consisting of various benzos, barbs, and opiates, anti psychotics, anti depressants, sleeping pills like ambien, and muscle relaxants.... most of these prescribed less than a week apart... you know your a benzo addict when your going through hundreds of milligrams of xanax in a couple weeks, and thats just the xanax, throw in some ativan after he rehab and temazepam here and there... because she has "RLS" pretty sure thats her reason... ive never seen the woman have a single fucking anxiety attack, there is no fucking reason other than a physical need for them that she takes them.... Ever come home to hear a thump upstairs and ask the people in the living room "is she fucked up?" which is usually the case when you hear her fall down. and when they say "not that i know of, go check on her" and go upstairs to see your mom face down on the floor having a full blown seizure. so you call the paramedics and they ask "what medications is she on?" and your first thought is "lots of them" or "so many i couldnt name them all off the top of my head"....

There is a point where you want to try and help someone...

If he has the script can't he just go to a different pharmacy to get it filled?

There is also always the black market.

yes he can but with class 2 narcotics they have to be filled on the same day (or give the pharmacist the script to hold onto until you can afford it if necessary)

If his doctor won't come up there to sign his fucking name on that little sheet of paper could another doctor (that works at the same clinic) sign off on it?

My dad is freaking for no reason, i think they have no choice but to fill it. He's been on the same exact meds for fourteen years and has not had to call his doctor for ANYTHING (he never runs out early & does not call his doctor to try and get more he never causes any problems for his doctors).

If his doctor or pharmacist are going to be a pain in the ass should he get mad? He's the type of guy that does not stand up for himself too much and would probably go through the pain/withdrawls for a whole week (if he didn't die or end up in the ER first).

The medication that he's currently taking is the only thing that can let him live a somewhat normal life. Not to mention he's five grand in debt with the IRS and is SUPER stressed about that also. Could you give any uplifting advice for my pops?

And i can only get dilaudid 8mg for 25 a piece. too expensive for us... WERE NOT RICH BY ANY MEANS.
