St. John's Wort
Picked up up a bottle at Walmart to try it out. I don't have depression, quite the
opposite. I'm normally in a much better mood then most people. I got it because I want
to start experimenting with herbs such as kava kava and so on. St. John's Wort was an easy one to start with. I have experience with many other drugs such as cannabis, LSD, DXM, ect.
Here is a photo I took of the bottle http://i42.tinypic.com/4ilct5.jpg
150mg per pill, 2 pills per serving. Recommend dose was 300mg three times a day. I tried to take one serving every 8hours, almost exactly. I wanted to make sure I made it as effective as possible. Below is a experience report of the last three days. To save you some time, it didn't do anything. I hate when I spend 5min reading a report to find out the drug has no effect.
--------------
Experience Report:
T – 0:00 - 300mg St John's Wort
T – 0:35 – Feeling happy and warm. 99% sure this is a placebo
T – 8:00 - 300mg St John's Wort
No effect
T – 16:00 - 300mg St John's Wort
No effect
T – 24:00 - 300mg St John's Wort
T – 24:00 – DayQuil (1 serving)
T – 24:00 - Woke up with a runny nose / stuffy head. Pretty sure its a cold
T – 31:00 - 300mg St John's Wort
T – 31:00 – DayQuil (1 serving)
T – 33:00 – Feeling very drowsy. It is only 5pm right now. I am normally up until 3am or later. Its very unusually for me to be tired at this time of day. I'm going to assume its because I have a cold
T – 40:00 - 300mg St John's Wort
T – 40:00 - DayQuil (1 serving)
No effect
T – 50:00 - 300mg St John's Wort
T – 50:00 - DayQuil (1 serving)
T – 52:00 - Feel very tired. Current time is 2pm. Took a nap from 2pm-4:30pm.
T – 54:00 - 300mg St John's Wort
Cold is basically gone, no noticeable effect from St. John's Wort
T – 58:00 - 900mg St John's Wort
Fed up with waiting for this stuff to work. Took 3 doses at once.
T – 58:10 – Feeling slightly twitchy. Rubbing my feet against the floor feels good.
T – 58:13 – Started writing this report. I feel very good and am smiling. Most likely a placebo. Before I was taking the pills and then forgetting about them. Now that I am writing the report I have to think about all the effects. I also just took three times as much so I am anticipating feeling euphoric. Pretty sure the reason I feel good is because I'm thinking about how good I'm going to feel (aka placebo). I'm eating some pumpkin pie and it tastes amazing. Pumpkin pie has this effect on most people.
T – 60:40 – Don't feel anything. I realize that the grapefruit juice I've been drinking could be effecting it. I also just took the last dose with grapefruit juice. Grapefruit juice blocks CYP3A4 and OATP1A2. Blocking CYP3A4 is good because it slows down the breaking down of certain drugs making them last longer/more effective. OATP1A2 is a “drug uptake transporter.” It helps with shuttling drugs from the small intestine to the bloodstream. Blocking OATP1A2 can potentially neutralize a drugs effects.

T – 59:00 – Heart Rate 78BPM. Got another slice of pie, its still delicious. No effects.
T – 59:05 - 900mg St John's Wort
Feel mellow, but no more so then when I have a good cup of tea. Coming to terms with the fact that St. Johns Wort is bunk, or at the very most its not noticeably effective. Decided to take another triple dose. If this doesn't work, nothing will and the bottle is going in the trash.
T – 60:10 – No effects.
--------------
Final Thoughts:
Maybe if you have actual depression then this will help. I'm already a very calm and very happy person. Perhaps the level I normally operate at is above that then when the St. John's Wort can provide and thus has no effect on me. The other difficulty in reviewing drugs such as these is that in most cases the feelings they provide are feelings you can experience without drugs. Yea, I felt calm and happy for the three days I took St. John's Wort. I also felt happy for the three days prior to that and I'm sure I'll be happy for the next three days as well. At times during the 3 days I would be sitting and thinking to myself “wow, this song sounds really good” or ”this food is delicious.” Normally those are feelings I have when I'm stoned, but the level that they were at was so small that I could have had (and have had) the same experience while sober. On the bottle it says “Mood Support” not “Mood Enhancement.” I think this is a very good choice of words. If you don't have depression or are looking to get high, don't bother with St. John's Wort
Note:
DayQuil – 1 Serving
Acetaminophen 650 mg
Dextromethorphan HBr 20 mg
Phenylephrine HCl 10 mg
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) 200 mg
EDIT:
At least I got an excuse to play with my camera. Good photo, right?

Re: St. John's Wort
It's one of those things you have to keep taking, it's not going to show effects after a couple of days. I read recently in the paper that it has been found to be as effective as prozac in some people :)

haha. I know what you mean. But on erowid there isn't much information on it so I figured I would provide as much detail as possible to save someone else the bother of trying it.

Re: St. John's Wort
SJW is a bit shit to be honest. I found it to cause anxiety in higher doses, and that is the opposite of what I want from an SSRI.
Pharmaceutical SSRIs > SJW.

Oh, St. John's Wort sucks, yet SSRI's are the cream of the fucking crop? Fuck that shit. Nobody in their right mind should take SSRIs. That being said, I know people that suffer from depression/anxiety that say taking SJW everyday did help them with their mood levels.

Kinda interesting though most praise is directed towards the awesome picture which will undoubtably be stolen to use as a stock image by somebody, somewhere.

My guess is the bottle usually comes with 72 but it's a "bonus size" bottle, so they want to point out that they're giving you an extra 28.

You're missing the point. After the initial few weeks, SSRIs reduce anxiety. SJW commonly increases anxiety when taken in moderate to high doses.
We know SJW works for depression; my point is that I'd rather have my SSRI working on anxiety too. SJW has been proven ineffective for anxiety disorders; SSRIs have been proven effective.

St. John's Wort? Hah, that's what me ol' gran-gran used to give me back when I was a wee lad and got the runs. Horrible tasting tea, though.

Re: St. John's Wort
I've heard that this shit has the ability to potentiate Suboxone.
Since, this is a SJW thread - I might as well ask ; is that true?
