OTC Wakeup drug (tl;dr available)
I have trouble getting up in the morning (Don't we all).
Sure, I could go to bed earlier, but 6 hours of sleep should be plenty.
Normally I go to bed at around 1am, wake up to my alarm at 8am, turn it off, then wake back up at around 9:30 (missing my first class). From there I get out of bed and spend the next hour stumbling around feeling sleepy. This happens to alot of people.
The other day I went to bed at 1am but set my alarm to 7am. As always, I woke up and turned off the alarm. But this time I had a bottle of "5-hour energy" next to it and I quickly drank that before falling back asleep. I only fell back asleep for about 10min and then woke right back up (I assume the effect of the energy drink kicked in by then.) After that, I couldn't fall back asleep nor was I tired at all for the rest of the morning. By the time the energy drink wore off it was already midday and of course I wasn't feeling tired.
I guess that 5hour stuff really works, because I wasn't feeling jittery at all, nor was there any crash.
I'd really like to keep this habit up. Waking up early with out having to put any effort into is wonderful.
The next day I went to bed at 2am and woke up at 6:45am and drank half a bottle of "Fuel: 7 hour energy shot" because I figured it shouldn't require an entire bottle to wake you up. I'm not sure if it was having less sleep, the lower dose, the different brand, or doing it two days in a row, but I fell right back asleep till 10am.
tl;dr
For the next couple weeks I'm going to experiment with different energy drinks to see which one wakes you up best after you hit that snooze alarm. I am going to try to avoid "energy sodas" like redbull and rockstar, because that stuff is pretty bad for you. Suggestions for energy drinks, drugs or otherwise are welcome.

Re: OTC Wakeup drug (tl;dr available)
All that 5-hour energy is is vitamins and other things you can get from regular food. Eat better food, things with more vitamins and minerals, and you'll feel a lot better in the mornings. Also, since when is 6 hours sufficient sleep time? I was under the impression that the average is around 8. Sure you can live on 6, but look at yourself, you're groggy and can't even wake up on time without supplements.

I always feel more refreshed and wake up easier off 6 hours than I do 8. Why? Beats me.

I'm the same way. After I cross the 7-8 hour line I feel like I need at least 10 hours to feel anything other than dogshit.
OP, maybe experiment with vitamins that promote healthy sleep patterns? During this time you can establish a sleep routine that allows you to wake up refreshed every morning. Doesn't help everyone...but it may help you.

Re: OTC Wakeup drug (tl;dr available)
I've tried those 5-hour energy shots and they do work. Like you said, they don't make you feel all jittery like coffee, just awake. Not amped, but not tired.
I usually wake up with a cup of coffee and a cigarette. Those energy shots are ok, but they'll get expensive if you plan on doing one every morning.
2 days of "not your normal hrs of sleep" isn't that much. Do it for a week or more and it'll catch up to you.
Melatonin is good if you're trying to reset your sleep cycle so that you go to bed earlier.

Re: OTC Wakeup drug (tl;dr available)
"5-hour Energy" advertises how it contains about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. If you don't have time to make a cup in the morning or don't care for the taste caffeine pills will be a lot cheaper than energy drinks. If you notice that it takes too long for the pills to start having an effect (I think kick in would be a overstatement) I don't think it'd be very difficult to extract the caffeine into a small amount of water.
I'm skeptical that just taking the vitamins and shit present in one of the "energy shots" once would make a noticeable difference in wakefulness almost immediately like that. You don't feel like shit after you drink an energy drink because of the caffeine "crash" (lol.), you feel shitty because you just drank a big fucking can of sugar water full of artificial flavors, preservatives, usually too much caffeine and some other compounds of questionable efficacy like taurine.
In my opinion caffeine is like nicotine, it's pleasurable and/or useful effects level off at a fairly low dose and while higher doses are reasonably safe they increase the negative side effects much more. I have tested this both intentionally and unintentionally several times, and I've never had a pleasant or even neutral experience that involved taking more caffeine than a normal cup of strong coffee.
Caffeine is exactly what you need in this case, there's a reason it's the most widely used drug for this purpose. It works fairly well with a minimum of undesirable side effects.

One word.... Methamphetamine. Instead of the crappy 5 hour drink by your alarm clock, put 2 nice finely chopped lines of crystal there instead. You wont even be able to go back to sleep for 10 minutes. You will be ready to go!

Lol. Not only will Meth get you through the next couple of weeks..but it'll become a part of your daily life for the foreseeable future! It's win win!
I have trouble getting up in the morning (not the little dude though..) but I take melatonin before bed and I always wake up refreshed, ready to kick ass and chew bubblegum.
Melatonin did the same for me. Since I found it around 3 years ago it has replaced Diphenhydramine as my primary sleep supplement. It comes on more subtly and in general doesn't develop tolerance. I was to the point I would have to take 6 Sleep 2s (Diphenhydramine) to get to sleep..and I've always had a problem with "fighting sleep" which means I'll continue to go about my business after I get tired. It's kind of a habit that i've always had. Denial of sleepiness. With Melatonin it creeps up and really just relaxes me rather than attacking me with lethargy. It will also help you develop more healthy sleep patterns and help you to wake more refreshed the next morning with little to no unpleasant "hangover". Something meds like Lunesta claim but don't deliver on.
Melatonins can be picked up at any drug store for around 6-7 bucks a bottle of the 3mg tablets. Take two around an hour before bed and take another right before you lay down. Chewing them up isn't required but I always do it.
Also try not to do anything like watch television or eat in your bed. If you can't get to sleep get up and go to another room or sit in a chair to watch TV. This will set the bed aside just for sleeping and help your mind to become more relaxed when you actually goto bed. Your problem may be that you're using the TV as a crutch while your laying in bed and cannot sleep. Also try to avoid eating alot or drinking any caffeine about 2 hours before bed. If you're used to noise (like I am) when trying to sleep get yourself a box fan or humidifier.

your brain probably has specific REM pattern. i actually had this conversation with my psych yesterday.
after six hours of sober sleeping, your probably in stage 1 sleep, the lightest, which means that your not gonna feel tired when you wake up.
after eight hours though, your probably in REM sleep, the heaviest. if you somehow naturally slept for two days and woke up from REM sleep, you will be tired as hell. on the contrary, your can sleep for 1 hour and wake up in stage 1 sleep and not feel that tired (excluding other sleep deprivation factors, like if you only sleep one hour in 36 hours).

The problem with melatonin is that it was discovered long before scientists really understood what it does and how much you need. For example, in the late 80's and early 90's, we thought melatonin was a sleep hormone. Now we know it is much more complicated. In addition, tablet sizes average 3-5 mg. New evidence shows that adult males only need 150 micrograms, and the average female needs only 100 micrograms (a microgram is 1/100 th of a milligram). So the average melatonin supplement is 20 - 50 times more than we need! If you are using regular melatonin tablets, you can cut the pill into fourths, otherwise, try to find the smallest pill size available. If you are taking time-released melatonin, do not break the pill, as this will ruin the time-release.

Don't drink coffee or take caffeine in the 8 hours before you go to sleep.
It will stop your body going to sleep properly & therefore you don't get into a good 'Deep sleep' & then you will feel tired the next day.
Try that, it worked for me, I just drank Coffee in the Morning & at Lunch time & then drank water from then on.
I'm not a fan of energy drinks, they don't wake me up, they just stop me from going to sleep...

No-Doz, if you're looking for a pill. Other then that, coffee.
Be aware though, that eventually, anything you take/ use you will build a resistance to. Most of the shit that keeps you awake is caffeine, so if you have a cup of coffee every morning, it's not actually the caffeine that is keeping you awake, it's habit.

Works for some. Don't try to get high by doing extra. It can be harder on your heart than meth if you do. ER Docs get a lot of folks who tried to get high on psuedo or ephedrine. A regular dose will activate you.

I have to agree with this, eating healthier foods WILL improve your quality of sleep, as well as your overall energy level, even when you get 6 hours of sleep (7-8 is better, though) Try eating a piece of fruit or a fruit-veggie smoothie first thing in the morning, it will work wonders for you. Also avoid too much grains as those take alot of energy to digest. I know you wanted an OTC wakeup drug, but I honestly feel this will be the best solution for ya, sorry if this post disappointed you.
But hey, this is BLTC. Pop some Adderall first thing in the morning.

I honestly don't care if it's more than I need. I take as much as it takes to make me sleepy. If I took 1/4th of a pill it wouldn't do a fucking thing to me.

Guarana worked surprisingly well for me. I bought a couple of self-heating coffees with added guarana, just to see what they were like. Took one the night before an exam to help me cram, thinking that I'd be keeping myself awake by the caffeine. Turned out that I only needed that one for the whole night. I was awake and able to concentrate all night, and still OK to take the exam the next morning. I haven't tried guarana by itself, but I think you can get capsules or powder or something from health food stores.

Guarana always makes me feel jittery as hell. It's got something like 4-5 times as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. It damn sure does wake you up/keep you awake though.

You build your tolerance to caffiene very quickly.
And those 5-hour energies are basically energy drinks without the drink (soda) and sugar.
One thig I have noticed during working construction is that caffiene makes those long boring tasks (like taking apart window frames) not so boring.

I think what induces fatigue and lethargy is waking up during deep sleep, stage 3 or whatever, when your brainwave activity is the lowest.

im repeating what my doctor saiid, he told me that waking up from a deep sleep or REM sleep will leave you very tired for a bit but refreshed after like 30 minutes, while waking from stage 1 sleep (shallow sleep) will leave you not very tired for like 30 minutes, then the amount of tiredness is based on the amount of sleep you had

If I need to get up early and I didn't get a lot of sleep, I set my alarm 30 for minutes earlier then I want to get up at. Then when I wake up, I take some dexedrine, then sleep for another 30 min. When my alarm goes off the second time I jump out of bed full of energy. Its awesome.

True Sudafed is a great and easy to get stimulant. I recommend twice the recommended dose. But does it work as well as caffeine?
This thread rules. I'm sticking some sudafed and caffeine pills onto my alarm clock so I have to take them in the morning.
