I need a gift idea for my dad. Somewhere in between free to a thousand dollars. It's really hard for me to get him a gift because he's into things that are free (a fishing vacation, trip somewhere, etc) rather than material things, but I would like a lasting gift, not concerned about the price.

Yes, I could/should pick it out myself, but I'm asking for your experiences. What gifts have you given dad that he's thoroughly enjoyed. Jack, what would you like your kids to give you? Hopefully you guys can offer some guidance.

Maybe a new ratchet. The heads have been misplaced over the years, and the only complete set is tiny and gives no leverage, which makes using it really bitchy and makes you feel weak. So, a nice large ratchet set. Because I get his tools when he dies :D

If he's more into fishing trips and boring shit like that go on a fishing trip with him. To get him to remember it forever get a new tent or something or fishing rod/fishing equipment, something good quality for him to be able to use it a couple of times and it still to look nice.

We don't know your Dad. If you want it to be a memorable thing, it needs to be personal. So this thread is probably going to be of very little help.

I got one when I turned 19. I'm going to age it for 19 years. Do I have to do anything special to age it, like put it in a barrel/crystal whisky holder/etc or can I just leave it unopened in the bottle?

I'd say that he'd very much enjoy doing something enjoyable with his son. If he likes fishing trips, then take him fishing. A day reef or deep sea fishing will cost a couple of hundred and produce some great memories. I don't know what trout fishing would cost but if that's his game...

Either way, you'll spend some quality time together which most fathers like, and you'll catch yourselves some dinner.
