Default "shallow"

To start a bit of debate (hopefully) how do you define 'shallow' ?

'Shallow' seems to be an insulting term, a term for someone superficial and basing their attraction to someone based on looks alone, right?

But seriously, to an extent no one is going to be attracted to someone they dont find even remotely good looking, are they?

Where's the fine line between being a normal person getting with someone they find attractive, and being really picky and "shallow".

Does it mean that we're all shallow?

Attraction isnt everything, sure. But surely it has to be atleast a little part of the relationship?

I dont think the term shallow has to relate to an attraction between people.

If I consider someone shallow, it's because they're conceited and usually quite boring.

Being attracted to someone surely has to at least start with the physical side. I'm sure people will tell me they fell in love with an ugly motherfucker, buthow often does it really happen.

You know, thinking about it I'm not too sure where I stand. Obviously someone would be shallow if they only went for the hottest people, but how could you draw the line? I think it also extends to status, and money. If someone is dating someone purely because they are rich, then they are a shallow person.

But in general terms I think it's overused.

I saw a very pretty guy the other day. No idea who he was, no fucking idea if his personality was good or bad. Nothing. All I noted was that he was pretty.
Is that shallow?

It's a great term to use when you want to feel pretentious and condecending at the same time.

I was just gonna say that.

It's what the 'outsiders' call the 'insiders'
By outsiders I mean the people who withdraw from society and have this irrational hate for social people because they are 'shallow'
Those ridiculously 'indie' people who go way out of their way to be 'individuals'
Whilst on the subject.
How is going out of your way to be different any better than going out of your way to fit in?
Just be yourself, really.

A slut: a person that sleeps with everyone else but not with you.

A shallow person: someone who chooses to sleep with someone else and not with you.

I think someone who is shallow is someone who judges the value of others based on what they have and how they can be of benefit. Like wanting to date only the best-looking people or the most successful because they will reflect well on you and provide perks like getting into clubs, inspiring jealousy in others, and giving you expensive gifts.

It's not wrong to like attractive people, nor is it shallow. But it is shallow to judge someone's value as a human being based on their appearance or wealth.

Default Re: "shallow"

Well, when you think about it, shallow can be defined as an interest in the external rather than the internal. Most people prefer the external person, the person that decides that looks are more important than personality. Though the term is thrown out a lot, it's actually a pretty stupid and hipocritical term. Most of the time, looks will actually determine a lot. See, the external of a person more often than not is determined by the internal. If someone is fat, chances are it's because they're a slob and refuse to take care of themselves. They can't make the 30 minutes a day to exersise or the 5 seconds it would take to grab celery instead of a snickers.

It's not that I don't like fat people, it's just that dating them is out of the question because they're lazy. Also, they can't take care of themselves, why take care of their studies? This means that they're fat, usually stupid, and their personality is influenced by how other people treat them (terrible.) Inner beauty matters, but only if you actually care about yourself and take care of yourself.

See, I meet people and I find personality very sexy. If someone's whitty, nice, and's fun to hang out with more often than not they're attractive because they have good social skills and understand the importance of being clean and fit.

But sometimes genetics fucks it up for them, that just means they're inferior, though.

No. Now if you would rather be with/have sex with the hawty than an average looking person with a good personality, then that would be shallow.

I think.

I honestly don't care.

It's OK to judge a persons dating potential by how they look, but a lot of women take it to a whole new level. Omg the nails weren't perfectly clipped on his hand. Omg, he had stubble today what a pig. Omg, he just ate some onion rings and has stinky breath. Omg, i saw hair on his back. It's also hilarious when some retarded looking filipina pygmy on Craigslist has a whole list of demands out (must look like Brad pitt, over 6 feet, etc etc).

It's also frustrating when women are shallow about things you can't fix. Men are mostly concerned with weight. 99% of women we all ugly could get male attention if they just lost some weight, but the same is not true for men. Many of us just will never be attractive to women, regardless of what we do.

So if I am talking to a girl abut Beethoven, and she's just like "the movie???with the dog???" THAT is a shallow ass bitch.

Shallow means that that person only cares about the external qualities of a person (sex, looks, respect for being with that person), whereas a non-shallow person has the ability to (and often tries) to get into deeper relationships than that.

I think of shallow as in lacking depth to personality.

Girls fall in love with my friend Mike because he's incredibly good looking and knows exactly what to say to women. The thing is, he's just not that bright and they often tire of him once they sleep with him.

Those that notice it before they do often coming waddling my way, interested on the grounds I'm slightly more engaging.

I don't find people attractive based on looks. I could look at pictures of muscular guys all day, and I wouldn't think that one of them was attractive, because I don't judge based on looks (mostly). Attraction grows as I get to know a person.

I guess I'm sort of shallow personality-wise, though. It doesn't take much at all to turn me off while I'm talking to someone.

I don't think anything in this post made any sort of sense. It's 3:14am. Leave me alone.

To an extent every human being is superficial. We all base who we like initially off of what they look like.

But to be truly 'shallow' one can't put aside physical aspects to embrace the other qualities the person may hold. It's negative because this it's seen as petty. The persuit of a physical perfection is sort of morally bankrupt because people who are shallow tend to forget everything else. Their perspective is rather 2D.

Bullshit. Just because you dont consider stereotypically attractive people appealing, doesn't mean that this initial attraction isn't there... unless you're blind or "special," I guess.

Why do women always tell lies?

I guess women get around this by listing what they find unattractive, rather than what they find attractive. Like ilikeniggers and her declaring she would never date a white guy.

See, that's shallow.
Assuming she's bullshitting just 'cause "women are shallow whores" or whatever.

I actually believe women are far less concerned about looks than men.
How often do you see average guys with insane hot women, versus seeing insane hot guys with homely women?

Yeah...

I can only think of one guy in my entire life that I thought was 'hot' the first time I looked at him. 99% of the time, there's no initial attraction; it grows as I get to know the guy.

Human beings are attracted to what they're attracted to...

Men are attracted to youthful and physically attractive women.

Women are attracted to men who would make for good, strong, stable providers.

For women to only go for guys with decent financial status or economic means, and for men to only go for sexy young dames, is completely natural. Does it make us shallow to do what nature intends for us? That would be a more appropriate question. Albeit a much more difficult question to answer.

To me, the actual meaning seems like it's lost upon the people who use this word. It's like someone said up there, both pretentious and condescending.

So what I think it actually is taken to mean, is someone who is not interesting, yet not plain weird enough to be called "weird" or "awkward". And they're not just "boring" because they have enough game to at least try and drive things towards sex. Thus, they are "only interested in sex" and are taken to be shallow. I've never really given too much weight to the idea that you have to be interested in hot girls only, or ignore personality. You just have to be a boring pervert.

Ironically, I would think that I would rather be called shallow than awkward, yet being shallow is probably much worse in terms of actual interactions. Would you rather be with someone that doesn't know what to say every once in a while or someone that is boring and won't stop trying to hit it?
