Trouble with Fedora
I'm currently trying to find a decent *nix for what I need. I might have to switch to windows on my main box as Linux is too time consuming.
I know how to use a command line, but don't want to. Also modern linux cli is so different to what I started on (BSD servers and the like).
Anyway here's a list of problems so far. I know I suck for not being able to hax all these problems, but as a lazy son of a bitch in two-thousand and fucking eight I expect my OS to be well written and work without constant nurturing.
1. Firefox crashes when on youtube. A lot of people have this problem, so it's not just my crappy computer.
2. Sound output won't work in a lot of applications. Would you like to use ALSA, OSS or that new sound system thing today? WTF? Get your shit sorted linux, pick a standard and stick with it.
3. Experimental/incomplete programs in package list. Some of these like gnash flash player, require enormous computing power from a processor. Others, like Miro, are easily broken by packages and configs or something. Miro on My machine won't run today, but ran fine yesterday. WTF?
3b. Yum and pirut are slow as a mother-pig in reverse.
3c. Packages advertised as wonderful and complete when they suck.
4. No MP3 support out of the box. WTF? Licensing? Free software? Call me ignorant, but I'd prefer if my OS supports more than OGG Vorbis sounds.
5. No Video player. - That's right, no video player. mplayer has sound problems and looks like crap, videolan is buggy, has sound problems and looks like crap, and the others like Kaffeine have no support for anything. I'd just like one that works, and doesn't crash constantly, flicker, have sound outages, etc. VLC on windows and Mac is indespensible, on linux it sucks.
6. No installers. The only installation program I have seen done even remotely right on linux is the OpenOffice.org installation. Even that is Java, and requires a user to log on as root to install. If you aren't root, it gives you some stupid unhelpful error.
7. Everything requires you to be root. If you aren't root you can't even move a file from /home/user to /home . Mac OSX finder and programs will display an authentication box to enable people to do root actions. Linux just says ERROR, maybe if you're very lucky you get a "Permission Denied"

1) Meh.
2) You don't have to choose anymore. Regardless of whether you pick ALSA or OSS, both are now just plugin interfaces to Pulseaudio.
3. YUM isn't there to mother you. I rarely use list or search since I already know what I want. And yes, it is slow.
4. Add Livna. Remove totem. Install xine xine-lib-extras-nonfree totem-xine totem-xine-mozplugin . ????. Profit!
5. Totem-xine, see above.
6. Do you like installers or something? For all its slowness, yum is still quicker and less painful than a Windows installer.
7. Why the fuck would a normal user want to move something into /home anyway? The reason everything apart from ~ is owned by root is that generally, a user can do everything he or she needs to do with only ~ writable. Most of the GUI admin tools will prompt you for root's pass. Otherwise just open a shell and su.

GUI's are needed to save me time. Compare something like a commercial partition editor to something like my nemesis, gparted.
gparted: read man files, web pages, forums, for instructions to use, get really expert on everything, partition drive. Time taken: about an hour.
GUI partition manager: click through, adjust partitions, click more. Time taken: about a minute.
I really resent the implication that because I want a GUI I can't have a really excellent operating system.

I don't know, but I don't use windows anyway so I don't care.

Re: Trouble with Fedora
Holy living fuck, could you actually not use Gparted? Its about as intuitive as throwing a brick. You select the partition, click and drag, then hit apply changes. You don't even need to read a man page, its a gui program. Are you fucking retarded?
If you like installers so damn much, get back to windows. Not even OSX uses installers. You have to click and drag on that. Where are you coming from exactly? I've always found that typing three words and hitting enter (two if you're using gentoo) is way easier than googling, downloading, and then spamming next/drag&dropping, but if you're so meshed into that, then have fun with it, you're fucked on linux. Don't expect the OS to change for you, unless you're an EXPERT PROGRAMMER.
Why would a normal user want to move something into /home? /home is where home DIRECTORIES go. I have a folder in /home where I store a chroot, but that's just because /home is my biggest mount point. Otherwise, /home is for home folders. That's it. If it was for anything else, it'd be listed in man hier, but all that my man hier says is:
Quote:
|
/home On machines with home directories for users, these are usually beneath this directory, directly or not.
|
There's no reason to shit up your system. If you don't want to look at something, hide it.
Most normal users get the above.
