its personal choice. use it and see if you like it more. you can install both and swap around at login on pretty well every distro.

i personally prefer gnome, others will prefer KDE, and others will prefer one of the other ones (XFCE and the like).

im not sure if you are trolling trying to start a stupid battle or are just lazy as fuck.

I started with KDE back in the days of Mandrake

I perfer gnome over all.
I find its simpler to use, and I'm not obsessive about my GUI

It only has one task bar, gnome has two.
It has a more functional, but slower file explorer.
It has a control panel, which although it sucks, is still better than gnome.
Some KDE apps are pretty good.
It looks neater and more professional (subjective, but true).

KDE you can shutdown and restart from the menu. Gnome you can't.
KDM is nicer than GDM, at least as far as I know.

You say that as if it's a good thing.

WTF do people mean by one task bar vs two. If you are talking about the pane bar, you can configure that to have as many or as little as you want.

I'm probably completely wrong though

Robinhoody renamed the title, blame him.

You mean it has one big squished together taskbar, instead of two normal sized ones. I don't see why it matters what the default is since it's very customizable in both Gnome and KDE.

I really don't like the control panel in KDE, I prefer the Gnome menus, but that's my personal preference so...

Gnome also has some pretty good apps. The one's KDE has that would stand out to me are Amarok, and Ktorrent. But when Deluge 0.6 is released it will be better than Ktorrent. Amarok is pretty irreplaceable, but Exaile does a very good job a mimicking it.

Very very subjective. By default I think they both look like shit. I could never get themes to work in KDE 3.5 so I automatically prefer gnome. And Emerald just makes it that much better.

I've used both for a good amount of time. I always come back to gnome for looks and overall functionality.

Sadly not. How does one restart from the menu in gnome. On mine I only see Log Out and Lock Screen. I need to go to console and su reboot to restart.

Shutdown > Restart in the Desktop menu.

You can also add the restart button to wherever you wish.
