I'm not sure if any of you are aware of an American show by the name of Mythbusters, but they host a TV series in which they test urban legends.

One of the myths they tested was a story where a WWII pilot fell 22000 feet, and supposedly survived the fall without a parachute by being hit with the shock wave of an enormous bomb in a train station.

Now, I'm not asking if this is true, what I'm curious is if anyone has seen the episode, and knows what kind of explosive they used?

Yeah I saw it, they used lots of booster charges which I think he said were cast so it would most likely be composition containing TNT and RDX or PETN.

just searching for cast boosters came up with dyno nobel which are a popular explosive company and it came up with this page

I fucking HATE that show. It's retarded as hell. Their "tests" and "experiments" are pointless as fuck, prove NOTHING conclusive, and are performed by idiots.

They FAKE tons of shit, pretty much ANYTHING having to do with explosives, like the episode about gas fumes and cellphones. NO FUCKING WAY those gas fumes made that shit explode like that, it was a placed charge.

AND they promote the use of NI3 for pranks and shit. Of course they don't say what it is, but they say it's made from I2, and a simple search would tell you exactly what it is and how to make it, inspiring thousands of dumb asshole kids nationwide to make the shit and use it on people.

That show is worthless, for education OR entertainment and should be taken off the air, and the entire cast imprisoned for promoting terrorism.

I completely agree. Their basic thing is "We'll try a myth...and if it comes out crappy, we'll destroy something expensive!".

Another thing that annoys me is their win-win scenario. A) The get to say "Myth Busted!", causing lots of 14 year olds to orgasm, or, B) Something cool happens. Causing 14 year olds to orgasm.

I like mythbusters. They aren't always accurate or correct, but they don't fake things. It's clear when they decide to go past the myth and blow the thing up however they can, and they don't deny it.

I don't think people are complaining about the fact that they try to make the myths happen even if they are 'busted'. Thats the WHOLE POINT OF THE TV SHOW. I think people are complaining because they apparently lie about the explosives they use? Im not sure.

If people are complaining because the people on the show say "WE COULD NOT GET THIS MYTH TO WORK SO WE ARE GOING TO HAVE SOME FUN AND TRY TO RECREATE IT OURSELVES", then I declare this thread is the worst I have EVER seen on totse. Who the hell CARES if a show SOMETIMES includes people blowing things up? Action shows have huge explosions every day, and you aren't screaming and crying like little babies about that shit....

Well, I got you worked up for another totse member who doesn't like you. I saw you post, thought it was stupid, and hammed it up to wait for your over reaction. And no, I didn't bother reading it, I don't care what you have to say. Stick to your banjo.

The issue was never in the entertainment value of those shows, it's that I get to clean up after all the 12y/o idiots who think they saw something interesting and log on to clutter the board with questions about it. We're forced to tell them how wrong their ideas are, after which they start yapping about us knowing nothing, they've seen it work on a scientific television show after all.

It makes these kids harder to get to, which means we don't get as much slack when talking about safety provisions, toxicities and plain old common sense, which you might need if you are working with high explosives. It gives them unrealistic expectations about their hobby, and will be advancing way too fast to get to a project which is sufficiently impressive -and is just as dangerous as well- ...

There HAVE been several discussion about Hollywood realism, and even though big blockbusters also pulls some kidiots into "playing with explosives", most kids know that those movies etc aren't real, but Brainiacs portrays itself as realistic, whereas it is -in fact- a big compilation of lies and stage pyrotechnics.

mythbusters, actually semi-quality show, they TRY to disprove myths n shit, with some science. usually they just use ideas given to them n shit. but hey, they will say, yea none of this shit worked, lets break open the special effects explosives crate. seriously, alot of the myths they do kinda reverses brainiacs process, like a couple myths with thermite and shit, it didnt do what it did on brainiac or burn a hole in their cement floor. it made me think twice atleast....

If I want fake explosions, I'll put on a Lordi/Rammstein/Kiss/Alice Cooper Televised concert marathon!

Mythbusters is my favorite show. Maybe not everything they do is 100% accurate, but I think they try to make it so without faking things. Yeah, frequently they're just trying to get an explosion without meeting the parameters of the myth, but when that's the case they do it just to see what it would take to make something happen and they explicitly say so. Like you don't want to see a cement truck blow up.

On average I think they do a pretty good job of testing whether or not a myth is plausible, and they're even willing to revisit myths that viewers believe were tested inaccurately.
