| Backyard Ballistics This forum is dedicated to the safe teaching and responsible handling of high and low explosives. You will not find any information on how to make "bombs" or any such device(s) . Backyard ballistics will teach you the science and the art of pyrotechnics and how to manufacture and use explosives/pyrotechnics safely and responsibly. Backyard ballistics is also a haven for rocketry and pneumatic cannons. All information contained within this forum is for educational purposes ONLY. Help with EMP devices
I have a big queston about emp bombs.
Does the range of the EMP blast depend on the number of coils?
If yes, how is it related?
If not, what determines the radius of the blast?
Please, answer!
Thx!

Re: Help with EMP devices
Aside from the above idiot, you'd probably have better luck in Mad Scientists or another forum dealing with physics and elecromagnitism.
I know a few people who've worked with EMP's, so I'll send them to this thread.

Re: Help with EMP devices
go with what vineman said. We are mostly HE's and fireworks..
though i would think the more coils would work. Yet the best way to make an EMP is to set off a nuke :/

Re: Help with EMP devices
Im actually quite intrested in EMP's i would be very intrested in some designs of non nuclear emp's and there range as well

Re: Help with EMP devices
Yeah I think this could make for an interesting and different discussion for BB.
I for one would like to learn a little of the theory behing EMPs.
*goes of to learn!*

Re: Help with EMP devices
My experiments involve only non-nuclear EMP devices, for many obvious reasons .
In the totse archive (Ka fucking boom) there are 2 tutorials on making non-nuclear EMP bombs. One involves explosive material, and the other one doesn't do it.
I read both the tutorials and surfed around on the net looking for further infos, but I didn't find things I was looking for.
I also read the document posted before, and it's really interesting, but it doesn't really explain things in a practical way.
So now I have some questions:
1st: Which one of the 2 tutorials I found in the site is correct? With explosive or without any explosive?
2nd: If an explosion is needed, as one of the tutorials says, could I use an aluminium cased capacitor(some capacitors have aluminium case) as an explosive and aluminium tube?? (in this tutorial it says that an aluminium tube is needed and the capacitor would be an AL tube filled with a potential explosive)
The explosion would be ignited by short-circuiting the capacitor.
3rd: If there is no explosion involved, how much power will it need?
Answer please

Re: Help with EMP devices
Don't read anything off the Ka-Fucking-Boom archive of the site. It's full of bullshit and garbage, 99% of which the author pulled directly out of their ass when writing it.
If you want to learn about EMP devices just because you're interested in the subject and want to educate yourself more, I suggest you start at my favorite place, Wikipedia.

Re: Help with EMP devices
The more energy you put into the capacitor, the larger the EMP effect will be. As for the explosion, it needs to hit the coil pretty hard. Wikipedia explosively pumped flux compression generator if you want explore the physics behind it and see the potential results.

Normally I trust popular mechanics, but how accurate is this?

Re: Help with EMP devices
Alright.
The guide with explosives, if I remember correctly, won't work. An explosive EMP is amazingly hard to build.
The guide without, if I remember correctly, is just a shoddy magnetic field oscillation generator or something of the sort (well, technically a real EMP is too, but on a much larger scale - this generates the kind of fields used to power speakers) and won't do a whole lot of anything. Even a degaussing coil would be much stronger.
As for the distance problem, that's like saying "If I make a sound, at what distance will it be audible?". Yes, it'll depend on coil size, but also the amount of power going through it, and similarly, not only will it not just stop working at a given point (attenuation is inverse-square of distance) but it's going to depend on the surrounding environment's magnetic fields and ferromagnetism.
Short version:
There's no 100% reliable way of knowing for sure whether an EMP will do what you need it to at a given distance without trying it. Or maybe spending hours doing experiments and calculations.
And neither of the designs work.

I have the instructions for building a non-explosive high-voltage directed/focused EMP discharger... It's remarkably fucking powerful.

Re: Help with EMP devices
Damage from EMPs is caused by a strong changing magnetic field created b y a solenoid. The magnetic field of a solenoid depends on a vast number of factors including the number of turns per unit length, the inner and outer diameter of the coil, coil length, current through the coil, presence of flux inhibitors, etc...
If you can be more specific with your question the good people here in BB could probably help you.

Actually... infinitely close; I have a friend who rearranged one and pointed it at stuff. Flourescent tubes lit from across the room, 'n fried electronics.
...of course, it helped that he actually knew how to make a columnating lens for the damn thing...

Not very similar in mechanism at all. They do have a few things in common, but no matter how big a microwave you make you're not going to disable electronics you don't have a line of sight to.
Edit: oh yeah, EMPs don't cause blindness. :P
