Knowledge is power. Power is money. Money is pleasure.
Or maybe you'd rather work fastfood for the rest of your life...?

Re: how can you guys actually enjoy reading for fun?
Well..I've seen plenty of stories of people who can hardly read who've faked their way into good lives & positions? You've got to be naturally pretty sharp to pull that off, I betcha.
Are you that sharp?
So...let's look at this...you only read when you have to & you only read what other people pick for you? And you enjoy it just as much as if you only listened to music other people picked for you?
Interesting.
ps If you want...try this: there is a Heinlein thread here. View that & see if anything is worth your while.
Try author Elmore Leonard. He writes like Heinlein or Hemingway. Very simple & clear language. If you have to go back over a few lines to see if you've got their meaning? Usually it clears up pretty fast.
EL started off with Westerns then moved to Mystery/Police stuff. Try your library or 2nd hand stores. 2nd hand stores/libraries don't worry so much if you hang around & read their stuff as it's already used.

Moonmeister has a point. If you've only read highschool english assignments then it's understandable why you don't have enthusiasm for reading. I never enjoyed reading until I started venturing in the library and found some good literature, the shit they don't teach you, and now I'm practically addicted. Start with H.S. Thompson, or Bukowski, both legendary gonzo/beat writers.

Re: how can you guys actually enjoy reading for fun?
Your teachers probably suck at picking books and or the recomended book list is too politicaly correct. If you actualy found something interesting to you it might actualy be enjoyable. Stephen King has many good violent books with the ocasional sex scene if that interest you. Michele Criton if you like technical stuff. Maybe the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy if you want science fiction that does not take itself seriously.

Re: how can you guys actually enjoy reading for fun?
I enjoy reading because everytime i read a book i learn something new. If you read the right books, the ones you pick and enjoy, then you will enjoy it too. I read all the time, but i hate reading for school, all the books we are forced to read are stupidly boring.

Re: how can you guys actually enjoy reading for fun?
Reading books that suck, like highschool english stuff, is still lame, but I find I can enjoy good books that interest me, like sci-fi and fantasy books. I just wish I could still get enough sleep so I could manage to take time off to read.

Re: how can you guys actually enjoy reading for fun?
I read books which have content that interests me, be it fiction or non-fiction. That's a reason to do it. There is so much stuff that, once I hear about it, I just want to know everything.
Having read a lot means that the mechanical process of reading is effortless, and the mental part (not to be underestimated) is natural. I think that makes a big difference.
A thought; The amount that you post on totse (3400+ posts in less than a year!), you must browse these forums a hell of a lot. You probably read more words per day than a lot of people you know. Totse may not be great literature, but if you're hear, you are reading for fun.

Re: how can you guys actually enjoy reading for fun?
They funny thing is, you're reading right now. This sentence, you're reading it. So you do like reading for fun, just a different kind of reading. Some people like romance, some people like science fiction. You like forums. I'm sure there are books that you would enjoy reading, you just havn't found them yet, and if you don't look, you never will. Try the Harry Potter books or Angels and Demons/Da Vinchi Code. Those are good books that most people, even people who don't like reading, like to read.
