Default DIY air conditioning

I tried freezing a large bucket of water, then putting a fan on top, but it did'nt work at all. I remember someone suggested putting ice water through a copper coil behind a fan or something. Does that really work?

It was ice water. And yes, it will work.

Yeah I started a similar thread a few months ago, after realising that copper pipe is fucking expensive and no one wants to give it away I decided that it wasn't worth doing.

They keep the copper and sell it to scrap metal yards.

I also considered using a car radiator in front of a fan too, some guy wanted 80 bucks for an old one at a wreckers yard. I was like "Yo I can get a whole car for 100" but he wouldn't take anything less.

To rub salt in the wound, I had a car that was suitable for wrecking but I gave it away a few weeks before I thought about using a radiator.

Does it have to be copper tubing?
If yes, Why does it have to be copper tubing?
If no, could you just use some aluminum tubing?

Copper is a great conductor, so thats why it usually is used, although aluminum is a good conductor also. I dont know of any aluminum tubing that you would be able to bend like you can copper though, so you might have to use a bunch of elbows....

Yea true that. You could use a propane torch though to heat it up a little to make it more ductile.

Don't buy from a wrecker.
Find a scrapped car or go to a scrapmetal dealer, I get $US2.25 for a scrapped copper heater core.
You don't have to pay much more than twice what the dealer pays.

Theres Aluminium cores too, nice and light & bulky, they are in car air conditioners, worth fukkall, try a car aircon firms backyard & ask first.

I'm thinking it may be possible but risky to run the household cold water thru it to cool down the air
& it may heat up the cold water going into the hotwater tank.

You could use an old air conditioner coil but you would have to blow all the oil out of it first and run alcohol thru it to remove any residual oil that is left in it. You could probably get one cheap from a heating and cooling contractor.
