1. You're extremely well off.
2. You're trying to get some clam.
3. The service was mind blowing (The only time I ever tipped was at this Chinese restaurant where the waiters pulled some Chinese voodoo on us and some how removed our empty plates with out us even noticing. Incredible.

So in a country where it's expected of you to tip (USA & Canada for example), guys will obviously tip girls, and even more obviously give bigger tips to mega-hot-cock-teasing-flirty ones, right?

In America, waiters and waitresses usually start off at about $2.11/hr (I think minimum wage is some thing like $5.60) and the the rest of their earnings are in tips. Even if your service sucks, you're still expected to tip 10%, even if you go and complain to the manager. It's considered extremely rude not to tip. I doubt anyone's ever thought "I'm a girl, so I don't have to tip". That's just weird.

I'm from America, and I will only tip if there is no point in the first hour in which my coffee/drink is empty. If they can keep my drink full, they get a 15% tip. If they can keep my drink full and remove my empty plates within 5 minutes of finishing, they get a 30% tip. If they do all that, plus are hospitable, I'll usually give them a nice treat and tip 50%.

Anyway, I always tip unless the service and/or food is utter shit. The food happened to be amazing on Saturday and other than that mishap the service was fine. People that don't tip ever kinda suck. I know it's just not done in some countries which is ok, but in Canada and the States, it doesn't make sense not to.

I tip my regular waitress at a bar pretty heftily. Why? I've been going there since I was 16 (3 years under legal age) and she never once carded me. Also, the drinks are like dirt cheap. Some places charge like 10 bucks a coke, but after like 5 hours of drinking, I usually end up with a bill under 20. So I end up tipping to the nearest 5/10. It ends up being a lot, but she's hot, and the service is fast and pleasant.

Well I have never waited before, but women are expected to tip, and most do I think. I think it is getting better, but back in the day I would guess less women tipped. Money/expences and shit weren't disscussed, and women do pay less often, so who knows.

But, when I delivered pizzas(i know lots of people have different tipping ideas for this), I noticed that the tip was far more dependent on how well off they appeared to be. I'd often get stiffed at 1/4-1/2 million dollar houses, yet rarely ever did it happen at appartmens that people propably rented for 400 bucks a month... To keep with the sexes thing, wealthy women seemed more likely to tip than wealthy men, but poor women was less likely to tip than a poor man. Over all, women seemed more like;y to tip, just because there are so many rich assholes. Thinking about it now though, it seemes it might be the opposite in an actual reastraunt...

Guys are a lot more likely to tip, for two reasons.

1) Throwing money around makes us feel powerful and seem like a 'big shot'. I always tip insanely too when I go out, so i'm guilty of the same thing.

2) For all that bullshit you hear about women being more sensitive, men are truly more appreciative as far as being served. Women are used to having everything done for them their entire lives anyways(the ones we're talking about at least) and pretty much expect being catered to. They only vaguely differentiate between people who are paid to service them, and people who service them just because they're girls.

With that being said, the respectable non selfish-cunt women usually drop a dollar or two in my jar. But i've never had a woman tip more then a five. Not even any fives that I can remember. Mostly just a dollar or two. Guys on the other hand tip me anywhere from one to a hundred, depending on how much they drink and how well off they are. And I work banquets, so I dont have regulars or anything. It's a new crowd at every party.

I don't know how things work exactly in the USA, but here in the UK it is a legal requirement for any employer, including restaurants, to pay at least minimum wage. If someone chooses to work for less than minimum wage, they have no-one to blame but themselves.

Being a waiter/waitress in a restaurant might be hard work, but it is not skilled work. There are people who bust their asses working throughout their school years, work hard at University and get good jobs. Take medicine, for example. I'm 18, finishing school this year. I've worked hard in school to maintain A grades in my exams. I'm taking a year out and then applying to Med Schools. If I get in (and this is purely hypothetical), I will obviously do the 5 years then become a Doctor. Now that is a hard career path. You have to work hard in school and spend your free time in work experience and volunteering to get into Medical School. You have to pass all your exams in Med School. Then you become a doctor, there are even more exams to take and long hours to work. There is a long career path involving endless learning and exams and fierce competition for limited positions in the higher ranks.

Now tell me that because some bitch who dropped out of school at 16 (when there is every support for people of all backgrounds to go on to further education) can bring me a plate of food without fucking it up, they deserve a reward.

As for tipping...

I know that servers have it rough. They get stiffed by the minimum wage laws. They get stiffed by enough customers that a good number of them don't even make up the difference. They have to put up with unreasonable assholes who expect them to be there exactly when they're wanted, not a moment sooner or later. The list goes on.

I'll tip as much as 25%-30% for really good service, the normal 15% (rounded to the nearest quarter or dollar, depending). Last fall I ate at a place where the service was just terrible, and the waitress was practically a clone of my ex. That is to say, shrill, unpleasant, and wouldn't shut the hell up. She did not get tipped.

It seems like the States is the only place where servers don't make minimum wage...

I worked at a liquor store for a year. It was hard work. I started at $7.50/h, finished at $9/h. I didn't get tips. Now why does a waitress making $10/h (remember, they make atleast minimum wage here) deserve tips but I don't? It's illogical.

So to all of you calling me a jew: Do you tip the girl at the liquor store? Do you tip the kid at McDonalds? Are they somehow less deserving than servers? The answer is no. Everyone works hard for their money, there's nothing special about those in the restaurant industry.
