The Car Shopping Thread
Post your techniques, achievements, and any fun stories you have about the wonderful world of breaking into cars for the purposes of stealing any valuables contained within. Fencing stolen products and such can also be contained herein, because it can be useful to all of us.
I'll start
Today's Spoils:
1- Digital Camera -- $150-$200
1- Bluetooth headset -- $30-$40
1- 1 GB iPod nano -- $100-$160
1- TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator
Various CDs
Backpack
all figures are according to similar items on eBay.com
Damn, I need a credit card to verify an EBay account, and I lack one. Any place I can get rid of these items I found, other than eBay?
And how do I clear an iPod's memory?

It may seem weird, but I find it morally objectionable to steal from a person with children still in the child's seat. I also do some other weird things, such as one time when I stole a backpack from an open car, I took it to my car, opened it, rifled through it for anything valuable, and all that was in it was papers and binders. I went back to the car and put it back, because I saw no need to cause a person undue stress for nothing.
I'm not gonna impress my morals upon anyone, but I'm just saying how I feel about doing it myself.

Even thieves have morals .
Also Biggles, cigarettes are one of the easiest things to get from cars, along with coins. I don't smoke, but my mother always leaves a pack of cigarettes in her car, and I always put my change when I break a dollar into a drink holder near the center console. I've also looked into a couple of vehicles through windows and have seen cigarettes in them plenty of times.

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
last nite when i was car shopping, i was just getting out of teh car(i threw my bag out and stepped out of teh back window(it was a jeep wrangler, so i cut teh material to get in thru teh back)), and i heard sirens... i thoubht to myself, "it must be cuz of something else..." not 5 seconds later i see the cars turn on my street.
shit.
i was blown. i ran like shit, busted up both my ankes, but kept running. the cops were HOT on my tail. i lost em in some bushes(dumbass's), and escaped. i saw teh cars near my neighborhood, and saw a cop talking to a neighbor... i ran back, hid my bag and stuff i took, i hid my knife, flashlite, etc. i unzipped my jacket, took off teh hood, and walked back to my house like i was just on a walk... i made it back, and teh next day (today) i went back and got my shit... unfourtunatly, it was a jepp wrangler, so i found nothing good... cept a good pair o boots

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
I've only carshopped one time last summer but during that time my friend and I probably went through over 100 cars. We would just drive to a bunch of different apartment buildings and me and him would just take one side of the parking lot and just check every car. It was going fine until i hear "uhh what're you doing" and some gay chink had just seen me try to open up his locked car i guess but i just ran away. We didnt get that much, i got about 40 bucks in change, some exspensive sunglasses(but they were prescription), some headphones, a bunch of cds, and some condems. Theres not really any techniques just be sure to check the center console, the visors(sometimes people keep their money there for some reason), and always pop the trunk.

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
Car shopping during the day is fine, if you do it at the right places. Going to the suburbs and car shopping midday would not work at all.
Places to car shop during the day:
-schools/school events (watch for cameras)
-Malls
-park-n-rides/carpooling lots
-pay-to-park lots
-Beaches/public recreation areas
-Convention centers
...you get the idea. Anyplace where a large number of cars congregate with not-so-stringent security. Just don't break any windows during the day because it's far more obvious as to your intentions.
In fact, I would only recommend breaking windows in the rain, when the sound will be masked and the broken glass will be less noticed on the ground.

Me and a friend are going car shopping tommorrow. We're going during the day but we're only going shopping in these parking lots behind buildings so we're out of site. Also there is a bank right by one of our places so we're gonna go get the change turned into cash. I'll post what I get tommorrow.

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
Okay, I need someone to guide me through this. I have only gone car shopping twice and both times, all i got was a few $$$ in change.
A few questions:
1: Do you only hit unlocked cars? because that's what i did and they always had fuck all in them
2: How do you usually open the trunk/boot.
3: What places can I go at night? Shopping centres aren't populated at night.
4; Is it safe to hit a car right in front of somebody's house, in the streets?
Cheers.

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
Todays shopping sucked ass. First of all we got stuck with this kid who was strongly against doing anything illegal and he fucking stayed with us for 2 hours. Then when we did go shopping there wasnt much. One time there was an unlocked car with a purse inside and a wallet in the purse and there was absolutely nothing in the wallet. So in the end i have nothing to show for it but we got the day off monday and during the teacher institute we're gonna raid the parking lot.

yea im looking at jigglers so i can make any car an unlocked car
either just open the trunk or pull the lever in the cars driver side on the floor
where ever people arent watching- security/cameras=bad
yes its safe theres lots of light but that dosent mean anyone is looking and i really think its funny that people think some lights will keep them safe

...
i shit it (ran like hell)
i didnt get ANYTHING but cut a big hole in the top of the car and cut some wiring inside a cable...

Depends, the ones around here are full of cameras and lights, but if you think you can pull it off, go for it. It would suck to be stuck on some higher level and have the cops sneak up there.
I usually determine the lockedness of cars when I am doing my precursory examination of the inside of the car with my flashlight. Just look for the popped up lock tab, and if it doesn't have one, or you can't tell, just lift the handle.

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
I just got back from a very small shopping spree. It was cut short when an alarm went off on me. After sprinting out of that neighbourhood I decided to just head home. Although I did manage get some walkie talkies that look pretty decent.
From now on I'm doing what Damn Kaktus does and actually look at the car before trying to open it. Before I would approach a driveway and just start lifting handles. I always ended up with more CDs than I could stuff in my backpack after just twenty minutes of shopping. Most of which I would discard after getting home and looking to see what I actually got.
I had the idea to put the CDs up for sale on Ebay, considering I could make off with hundreds of random CDs in an hour of shopping. But now I think I'll just go for big ticket items and leave most of the cars untouched.
trogdor, there's really no way of looking honest when you're crossing lawns from driveway to driveway at three in the morning. Depending on who sees you and where you are, I suppose it's possible to look normal, but only at a glance. If I was going to my car in a parking garage and saw somebody rumaging through a car a few spaces down, I would assume they were sitting in their own car.
About the alarm that went off on me, I lifted the handle of a car and a small panel lit up above the handle with a bunch of numbered buttons. I was like: "Oh cool, you need to know the combination to get in". Well, I didn't even bother to guess and I was about to move on when it started screaming at me.
By the way, how old are you all? I realize that most of you are going to be between thirteen and seventeen. I'm eighteen and I do this shit, does that sound weird to any of you?

just wondering, best places to go for in order?
under seat, glove compartment, driver/passenger mirror (the flip down one), change compartment (like ashtray) and the boot?
sporadic thought, but what places (apart from thoe) do you find stuff?
oh, and next time I go, i'll just be looking for cash, I won't be able to hide a new iPod/phone/laptop from my parents
I did some scouting earlier today and a few cars were unlocked - shame it wasn't night though

I have yet to find anything under a seat. Glove compartments usually just have useless papers in them. Trunks, center consoles and mirror pockets (or whatever) are golden though.
Where is the button to pop the trunk on most cars? On my dad's car the button is on the driver's door, near the floor of the car. But I haven't seen the button on anyone elses car and I'm understandably uneasy taking the time to look for it when I'm sitting in someone's car at night.

Some cars dont have buttons for the trunks. Mine doesnt, but it is also an older car (1994). Most newer cars would have a button somewhere near the drivers side door or underneath the steering wheel towards the left side.

Personally, I don't bother to turn the lights off, but it couldn't hurt.
Half a mile or more, I guess. I just go to a part of my town that I'm not familiar with.
Driveways are best IMO. But do what you want.
If smoeone sees you, it's time to give up. Stay put and wait for the cops to arrive.
I'm pretty sure all your questions have already been discussed.

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
On 'Ninja Rocks'
What are 'ninja rocks'? Ninja rocks are little bits of porcelain, that's right, the stuff toilets are made of. A small (peasized) piece is able to quietly break a car window.
Where do I find 'ninja rocks'. Ninja rocks are generaly obtained by smashing a spark plug. The plug has a white part made of porcelain. Shatter this part into small pieces to get the 'rocks'.
Why use 'ninja rocks'? It's because when they're used right, they're very quiet. Breaking a window does make noise, but not a lot. If you try to smash the window with a hammer or a rock, you may not break it the first time, causing a very loud thud. If you do throw someting large through the window it will make a lot of noise when it hits the inside of the car. Porcelain is more dense than the glass they use in car windows and so reliably breaks them. The small rocks also do not create very much noise when the hit the inside of the car.
How do I use 'ninja rocks'? Stand a foot or 2 away from the drivers side window. Throw one pea-sized piece as hard as you can at the window. You don't really need to throw it that hard, but it helps ensure that the window breaks. Reach through the broken window and unlock the car. Wear a long sleeve shirt, the type of glass they use in car windows won't cut you but it will give you nasty and painful glass splinters. Take anything of value in the car, make sure to pop the trunk and check there, as well as flip down the visors and check there. Some people leave money clipped to them. Don't bother searching through the whole car for the 'ninja rock' you used. You won't find it and it's not worth the time. Now get out of there fast.
One thing you might want to try is to superglue a 'ninja rock' to a hammer. Make sure it's on there tight. Now you should be able to break a car window with one quick, hard tap with the hammer and never have to worry about running out of rocks.
I have never been car shopping and would never break in to a car or steal. This is simply some stuff I've heard from people I know.

if you want to actually profit and be successful you've got to invest time into making and buying tools to unlock most cars out there, you got to learn the techniques of slim jimming, jigglers ect . the most you might find is like matches, change, lighter
don't quote me tho on what you might find.
it all depends on the environment your car shopping in, say you car shop in the upper class gated suburbs you might find some cars unlocked with some nice toys in them but more cars are going to have alot of expensive security systems on them.meanwhile if your car shopping in the ghetto you might get shot at or something and find jack shit, or maybe find a dealers weed stash or cash stash etc.
|
Yup, I couldn't agree more. Who would leave their laptop in their car for a good reason? I'd try parking lots. You check for someone that just parked, go to his car and check what's left. However it's not a good time to break stuff, as your face is not (or should not) be exposed and because there's people around.
By the way, nice to see you without the noobs around GMT, it was about time for you to leave RottenEggs:P

Yeah, you don't need ID for gift cards. It might be empty though or already spent most of it.

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
After reading through this thread i want to go car shopping soooo bad. But i wont be able to go for about 2-3 weeks because i will be on holiday and can only go out late at weekends because im 15.
I hope to steal a lot of cigarettes and money when i do go. Anything more is a bonus. I'll do unlocked cars most of the night then when i'm about to go home i'll smash a locked ones window. I'll keep an eye out all night for a good item then go back to it.
All I steal now is unlocked bikes and shit from school, and i occasionaly shoplift, i hope to be strealing a lot more from cars and houses soon though.

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
Speaking of gift cards, I know this doesn't belong in this thread but I didn't feel like making a new one. Go to CVS or somewhere (CVS works the best) then write down a bunch of prepaid card numbers and then look on the back for the number to see how much you have on them. When you get home wait like a month and then check the phone number to see if any are active. If they are just use them as regular credit card numbers on websites (don't for forget to write down expiration dates and the CCV2 number)

Two questions that even some new arrivals could answer
1. How far away should you be before you can go carshopping? (Ex: 1/2 a mile, 2 miles, etc)
2. I don't have a car at the moment, so would taking a bicycle to the area be better than walking, or would it just rouse suspicion?

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
i read the majority of this thread but i have to get off my computer soon and wanted to ask this question. since its summer now and lots of people are at work would it be an ok idea to car shop peoples secondary cars. like the ones they dont drive to work. also i would need to do this in the day since i have to be in at a certain time because of my probation. also were are good places to shop in during the day like should i shop in residential or should i go to like parking garages. also i would imagine that most cars would be locked in the middle of day so im going to probably going to use ninja rocks to break the windows.
so does this plan sound good. go for a walk to a different hood bring a backpack and gloves and my ninja rocks. lurk on cars see if any are unlocked if so then go in and loot for 30 seconds then leave quickly. try no to break windows unless i see something like a digi cam , a laptop, purse etc. tell me if this is a good plan for a first time shopper. i know the day part isnt the best situation but i have to make due.

i dont know if this counts as car shopping but i was jackin a phone charger for my car from target. and i come out and go to my car and my key doesnt work so im like wtf and im in a city 90 miles from mine so im like this is just great. i go to open the car and the door is open so im like thank god. then i see that its not my car but is the exact same model and color. i open up the center arm rest and find a black ipod 30gb video and about 30 cds. i take it and book to my car then im like o shit i missed some spots. so i went back but didnt find anything good under the seats of the glove box

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
I wasn't sure if I should post this or not, but I'm going to for the benefit of Bad Ideas.
A place where nearly EVERYONE will leave ALL of their valuables in the car.
Canoe Trips. You know, where you drive to some park/camp downstream. A "shuttle" comes and brings you to the canoe rental place. And then you arrive at the end where your and everyone elses cars are.
I recently went on a short canoe trip with a friend. We arrived back well before anyone else had. Upon looking on a few cars we spotted a moneyclip and wallet on the front seat of one car, and a blackberry a razr and a wad of cash in the cup holder of another car. If this wasn't a family trip, you all know what would of happened.
Nearly everyone will leave their things in their cars. You could simply find when the shuttle leaves, strike quickly with a friend and clean out every car. The only downside is that almost all cars will be locked due to everyone stashing their valuables. A window punch, or good supply of ninja rocks is needed.
Enjoy.

winslow thats a awesome fucking idea. if i ever go car shoping i go to places where people are usually going to be quick. its a little risky but the rewards are awesome. think about fast food places where people are only going in for 15 minutes they are more likely to leave there vehicle open because they know they are going to be quick and they feel its safe because there also no more than 50 feet from their car. i also like post offices, many times people are going to be quick and they have good shit in their cars.

I went the other day and out of about 20 open cars, all I found was a flashlight.
Sure, I found things like a dollar in loose change (between all 20 cars), a seashell, a 9 volt battery, a pair of broken sunglass, ect.
You get the idea. So am I just unlucky or what?
Where are these ipods, cash, drugs, booze, laptops, an so on?

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
Anybody got any good ideas on how to fuck with car sirens? Hypothetically speaking, it might be possible to just spray all of the outside air holes with polyutherane foam, but the siren could still sound thru.
One way to get inside an alarmed car, might be to tape a side window, then use a window punch that only cracks the glass in the frame. Then you SLOWLY pull the tape off, and hopefully, because it is stuck to the glass, it shouldn't make the same noise frequency as shattering glass (which could set it off). Also, the air pressure will only change slightly, because of the speed the tape is being removed. Finally, u take about a minute to climb in and out of the window, so as not to disturb the air pressure in the car. There r probably sum flaws in what I said, so do u have any other ideas? As for stealing the whole thing, that's another thing entirely. This would only be useful if some dumbass left his laptop there.

As far as crime forums, just this and Rorta. I rarely post on totse and almost never on Rorta as the Scams and Crime section and forum in general is not very active. I also checked out an Urban Exploration forum which seemed pretty good the other day. Would you mind giving me a link to your NO forum? I wish totse had privet messeges. We don't like the site to be spread around too much. We don't want it to turn into a flame fest like totse. Give me a bunk email to send it to.
Anyway I was thinking about when ever I went car shopping I would always go by cable vans. Now they are always locked. So how do I bypass that, so I can get the good stuff. Could I use stuff in the van to make Pirate TV/ radio.

Look, alarms DO NOT MATTER
If the door is unlocked then even if they have an alarm it will not go off.
If the door happens to be locked and they have an alarm, then the 15 seconds between when you smash the window and when you get the fuck out of there isn't enough for the police to get there, or the owner, or whoever happens to be around.

depends what kind of alarm.
my car has an aftermarket alarm installed on it, that if it's set to on, it will go off when a door is opened, no matter if it was locked or not. you can unlock the door with the fucking key and the alarm will still go off when you open it. i've done this before when i forgot i had set the hidden switch to on. i agree that most people do not pay attention to alarms, but this one is the aftermarket air horn and other loud noises. i think it would at least attract attention in the sense of "whose fucking car is that???" causing people to look out their windows.
then there are other alarms that go off when you just pull the handle of the door, whether the car is locked or not. you don't know.
my mom's old car had a flashing red light on the dash, but no alarm other than the standard ford panic button thing which was never used, so the flashing light may not mean there's an alarm.

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
I have tried this before and I have a few questions for those more experienced.
What would the best areas to strike (at night)?
How many cars do you normally try until you find one unlocked?
Do those security lights that go on when you go up someones driveway actually wake anybody up?
I have tried it before and only found like 4 cars unlocked in the space of about 3 hours in normal suburbs. (Not that i am admitting anything)
Also I don't think i have ever seen anyone stupid enough to leave their laptop in their car. I certainly wouldnt!!!

Nigga.. if you're into high risk high reward, you could prey on people warming up their cars in the morning, if you could get in and get out fast, then it might yield some nice shit.

Today's Spoils:
1- Digital Camera -- $150-$200
1- Bluetooth headset -- $30-$40
1- 1 GB iPod nano -- $100-$160
1- TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator
Various CDs
Backpack
all figures are according to similar items on eBay.com
Damn, I need a credit card to verify an EBay account, and I lack one. Any place I can get rid of these items I found, other than eBay?
And how do I clear an iPod's memory?

sell them on craigslist.com and you have to have a charger that plugs into your comp. so that you can erase the info.

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
I was thinking of going car shopping sometime, but I live in an area where theres a bunch of paranoid middle-classers that get suspicious if they see some kid walking around at 3 in the morning. Is there anything I can do to look as least threatening/suspicious as possible? I was thinking of bringing my dog, but it would probably end up in a barking match with neighborhood dogs and wake everybody up. Maybe I should wear a Britany spears t-shirt and a rainbow cape.

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
After reading and thinking about this option, I decided I'd give it a try after completely discarding the little sense of morals I had left.
Did a little scouting yesterday around my neighborhood, it's a wealthy suburban area and there are fucking street lights everywhere, in addition most people have their outdoor house lights on (some also have motion sensors as well). Worst part was the moon was out and there were no clouds so virtually I was visible everywhere.
I'm planning to scout another neighborhood near me (so I won't be recognized) and there are woods to hide in and fences to outrun people. I've seen cars left unlocked and since there are a lot of students I'm sure some of them are gold mines. I'm not really doing it for the money but more for the thrill - wish I had a hardcore friend to do this with but most of em are pussies
Anyways, one thing I wanted to suggest was that I was walking under backyard decks (no one has fences here) and noticed a lot of the basement windows were unlocked. Would it be worth it to break into a house or should I stick to cars?
Also, since there are a lot of students here, people stay up late you can see lights on in at least a 1/3 of the houses, and I'm worried that some of em might have their desks right up next to the window where they can see shit happening to their car...
This is all fictional of course.

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
Hypothetically...
I went out once, got mostly shit but about $60 in cash. After 30 minutes or so somebody saw me in his car, and started chasing me. I ran like fuck, when I noticed that the backpack I brought (but hadn't filled) used metal zippers that made a ridiculous amount of noise. So I had to ditch the bag, which although empty was still my only good bag. I went out a couple days later, managed to steal a new one, but noticed the zippers still rang (although I planned ahead this time and just shook it to test it). I figured out that a small strip of duct tape wrapped tightly around the zipper toggle makes it completely silent and it remains easily openable.

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
haha, if you guys want to be extra dickheads to people you are carshopping from, i just heard some shit on the radio about kids in georgia going around to peoples cars and turning the inside dome lights on so the battery will drain and the car won't start in the morning. i've known people who have accidentally left their dome light on, so it's not very noticable compared to turning the headlights on. and given a whole night, it probably would drain the battery.
wouldn't surprise me if these kids posted on totse. they're doing it to unlocked cars, and the radio show was making fun of them for being unable to come up with a solution to this problem. like they had a town meeting and shit, haha. FUCKING LOCK YOUR DOORS, HICKS.

Fair enough if u want to stick to the cars on the sidewalks, but I'll tell u, I don't bother with those ones because of the odds of them being locked. The only stuff I've got has come from creeping up people's driveways. The garage lights have flicked on a dozen times, but no one's ever been woken up by them.
Sum guy mentioned going in two pairs of socks, because shoes can sometimes be squeaky, so I might try it out. Hypothetically, I might try out jamming a screwdriver down the side of the smaller corner windows, then applying pressure to break it. Only for the most isolated cars though.

I wore two pairs of socks my second time out, last night. The first night I was *squeak squeak squeak* Last night it was nice and quiet. I will wear two pair again. Tonight, hypothetically, I plan to go up into some semi long driveways. I'm just worried about sneaking back...
Or should I just cut across lawns?
I went into a shitty car on the street, and i was in it, I couldn't get the lights off, and when I left they wouldn't turn off after I left... And someone was outside down the street... i was frightened.

Most of the time there is no one looking out. So there is no one to see you. You just have to shadow jump.
I think the best way is to not take any body, more loot and less ways to get into trouble. Thats why they all died in resivour dogs. You only know what you did and not the other guy. I like the goth kid walking his dog at night. But you cant take your Rat Terrier or untrained big dog. You need a Germen Shepherd, Doberman Pincher, Australian Cattle Dog, or a Rhodesian Ridgeback. But are you going to train it to only bark when you say so and to grow at people or be nice to them on command? Are you going to train it to find things by smell such as weed, money, jewelry, ect, on comment by name? To attack people or attack there legs to when you punch them they trap attack. I bet not. But I did one time...

Back streets, preferably in high end areas. High end areas are usually older suburbs so less street lights, etc.

Since there are a lot of students and if people see you going threw a car, just pretend its your car and your looking for something in it, just dont be loud about it. And always trust your gut. It might sound stupid but if you have that feeling something is going to happen, just leave

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
So when you guys carshop do you go for cars that are in driveways or in the street? What about parking lots or structures? And when you do go do you just look in the car, see if it has something valuable and then break the window grab and run. Or do you just break the window, hopefully find shit and run? Or just look for unlocked cars?
And when an alarm does go off about how long do you stay before you leave?

Re: The Car Shopping Thread
You're more likely to find better goods & unlocked cars in driveways, buy the streets are much easier and safer. Just a toss up with how comfortable you are doing it. Parking lots are fine, but it'll look quite suspicious, and structures normally have cameras & are lighted. You can either just pull the handles discretely as you walk buy, and/or glance in. If you see something and it's not unlocked, whatever you want. If you wanna be nice, just leave it. If you think it's worth it, window punch/ninja rock that bitch. Just look for unlocked cars as a general rule, you're not going to find much more randomly smash & grabbing, you're likely going to get caught if you do. And when an alarm sounds, go to the shadows and ditch as fast as you can. More people are going to look at what mother fucker's car just woke them up because they're pissed off, not because someone might be breaking into one.
