Abusive Traits in the Very Young
A nine year old comes into your home, he is close enough to being part of your family that you don't quibble over the detail that he isn't actually a little brother, and informs you that he "smacked some bitches today because they wouldn't keep their damn mouths shut."
You look into the issue further, out of choice. This brings up the fact that the girls he struck are bruised badly and one has a split lip. Several of the bruises are kick marks on their torsos. The principal has contacted his parent and no charges are being laid; his mother has decided that since charges aren't being laid that it's just a case of boys being boys. He is being punished by the school, his punishment is staying indoors during lunch for the rest of the school year; this was already being enacted due to poor math skills and needing extra help, so there is no punishment.
No punishment at school, no punishment at home. Nobody telling him that what he has done isn't positive. He is bragging about his "accomplishment" and tells the story with a big grin on his face.
Thoughts? How would you react?

Re: Abusive Traits in the Very Young
I have a younger sister who lives with her father. She isnt properly disceplined, and because she doesnt live here when my mother tries she rings her dad to take her home... it's an awkward situation.
Out of everyone, Im the only person who she'll listen to. Ive never taken any shit from her, very strict, and she seems to need my respect more than either of her parents. Numerous times I have had to threaten her, in an angry big brother way, to never do something again. It's worked.
Depends on your situation, but try to put fear into him somehow. Obviously if you're able to do this or not depends on how much he already fears/respects you.

Be a shame if that kid was badly 'exlaxed'?
If his bowel were to cut loose at the most awkward time?

Re: Abusive Traits in the Very Young
When my kids first went to school I said this to them: "Someone attacks you it is up to you wether you stand your ground or go find a teacher. If you see someone picking on someone smaller or weaker then you have NO choice, you always wade in and protect them. I will always back you up against the school or social services".
In the case you describe I would want to know why exactly he smacked the girls before deciding on any course of action. The answer "they wouldn't shut up" isn't, I'm sure, the whole truth.

Not that I much look to this opinion, but I looked into it.
They were talking about who they would want to "date" and the girls all agreed that they didn't think he was up to their standards; they weren't sure if he even liked girls. It was a private discussion of theirs that one of his friends overheard and ran back to gossip about it. Apparently, it was an obvious outrage that couldn't be suffered.
He went and found these girls and "made sure they'd show him respect next time they decided to let their mouths flap."

Re: Abusive Traits in the Very Young
^^^ Yeah... that could be a problem.
Didn't like what the girls had to say, or called him ugly or whatever, and he beat them up.
Definatly some forshadowing of commming years.
You said he is almost like a brother, teach him what's right and wrong.

In truth, if he were my kid and i lived in a part of the world where it is still legal then i would probably take a switch to him....and let the girls know, on the sly, that i had done so.

I know how the poor kid would feel. It's not easy being ugly. Not exactly right to go beat someone up over it, though...

Uhm that would be my guess too but be careful, it is a fallacy that children 'live what they learn' in this regard.

Re: Abusive Traits in the Very Young
Id give the kid an oldfashioned spanking. Spank the fuck out of him and let him know if he ever hits a girl again except in self defense the same thing will ensue except a more harshe spanking. Spanking worked for me ill never ever hit a girl or what ever. Sometimes id hit my little sister because she would hit me or doing something really messed up and my step dad spanked my ass or threatend to and bam no more again. SPankings do work, a kid is afraid of being spanked he wont do what will cause a spanking. Thats whats wrong with kids these days no discipline.
Id also have to go talk to the mom and let her know she is a complete fuck up and if she doesnt change her son is going to be a wife beating asshole some day.
As for the girls if they were old enough to take something from the beating they kind of deserved it. I mean obviously at that age him kicking their ass wont make them say "hey maybe he has feelings and we should be more considerate" its going to make them think hes a jerkface and hate him more and probably talk about him even more.
If he seriously said what you said he said id have a SERIOUS talk with him and let him know the "tough guys" on tv that try to be pimps are horrible people that deserve to be castrated and that if he hits girls again aside from defending himself youll spank his ass or punish him. As well as making him realize that just because someone makes fun of you is no reason to hit.

If the girls were in truth just sitting there minding their own business, which was overheard and then passed on by a third party, the kid needs a good ass whippin.
If the girls have been ganging up on him and attacking his weak points day after day after day, they got what's coming to them. No tolerance for bullies, male or female. If they're bullying him, he should do it again and again until they stop.

Re: Abusive Traits in the Very Young
Yeah, he definitely needs physical discipline. He also needs to understand why it's wrong and why he should never do it again. Things like this affect children immensely so something more needs to be done soon. I wouldn't doubt he'll do it again.
They say a persons personality is formed by the time they're 5. I'm not sure how much I believe that because experiences change everything. My thoughts would be that he saw an older figure hitting a women on TV or in person and he was affected by that.
I think one question I have would be, if he's capable of it now, will punishing him really prevent it from happening in the future at some point? I suppose it would reduce the amount of times it occurred, but I believe that this shows signs of another incident similar to this happening in his future.
Then again, I'm just thinking aloud.
If you're close enough, consider talking to his parents. It's a big thing to tell one how to control their own child and people are often offended by it, so choose your words wisely. I don't think it's your position to discipline him yourself. If they don't do something about it then perhaps you could threaten him. It's a very iffy subject, trying to help somebody else's child.
Hopefully you'll do something about it. Or they'll realize what a big deal this really is.

Re: Abusive Traits in the Very Young
Side note, you guys here about the kid in first grade who got suspended for sexual harassment? See, he had just read corduroy, and corduroy had lost his button. So the kid pulled a button off of a girls dress that had lots of buttons because he wanted to give corduroy another button. Suspended for sexual harassment, 1st grade.

Kids strive to please people.
Let him know this did nothing of the sort. Tell him it's wrong, and you're very disappointed in him for acting like that. Explain to him that it's disrespectful to hit a girl, and try to convey how this might give him a terrible reputation when he gets older.
You'd think by age nine he'd know the difference between right and wrong though.

Sounds like ineffective parental discipline and that school should have at least suspended him. He either has a ADHD type Agressive disorder or his parents need to show him right from wrong.

Re: Abusive Traits in the Very Young
Euda, do you know whether he has a strong male influence in his life? Does he have a steady father who is present, or is he getting his dose of "how to be a man" from MTV?
It would be my guess that he has no strong, guiding father figure. Possibly being raised by a single mom?

His father is dead/gone before he was old enough to have met him. No strong male influence. Canada doesn't have MTV, we recognized crap and it went bankrupt.
Single mother, mostly. To be fair, there is a father-figure; he expresses things, but is unable to take any effective hand in raising the boy due to motherly overprotectiveness. The mother simply undermines anything he expresses.
The boy has severe abandonment issues and cares deeply about what others think.

If that happened at my school that boy would have been completely ostracised and teased for hitting girls. It may be that he'll learn it's not acceptable just from how his friends react.

Fixed.
I feel this is a case where someone needs to take on the task of beating this poorly disaplined child. Although if they are really teasing him, you could try teaching him how to really shut up young girls. Mainly fat/slutty jokes.

Don't blame that ADHD bull shit ive been diagnosed with it all my life and although yes the pills do help I stopped taking them a few years ago and started making it on my own, it was hard at first but YOU dont need drugs for it. Not to mention when I was a kid lots of things are done on impulse but with discipline in my life I was able to get better. Maybe the kid does have the ADHD becuase I used to get violent very easy and kick some ass over nothing almost but that doesnt mean his problem was parental after getting in trouble I fought less and less.
