The mean age of a family is 18
The father is 38. The father dies, the mean age of the family is now 14. How many children are in the family?
2, 3, 4, 5 or 6?
No cheating; no google.

You can't answer that without knowing the age of the kids and the mother. It's just speculative otherwise. If I had to speculate, I would say 3, cause if the mom is 36, and there are 3 kids of around 10...

Re: The mean age of a family is 18
I got 5, possibly 4. Here's how I did it:
X = combined age of family members N = number of family members
Given Data: X / N = 18 (X-38) / (N-1) = 14
Do some algebra...
x = 14n + 24 (14n + 24) / n = 18
Solve that.. 4n = 24 n = 6
That's the total number of people in the family, one of them is the father, leaving 5 left. Since no mention of the mother is made, either there are just the 5 kids, or one of them is the mother, leaving 4 kids.
