Re: Emo
It's both a type of music and an aesthetic. The music started in the early 80s and was an offshoot of hardcore music, and has slowly evolved in to some of the most obnoxious whiney drivel you will ever hear. The look typically involves guys in really tight jeans, black rimmed glasses, hair hanging over their eyes, a messenger bag and a t-shirt of either one of their favorite bands or something "ironically retro."
Edit: I should add that the main facet of emo everyone knows it for is how they seem to glorify how depressed and unloved they are, but just come across as whiney little bitches to anyone who isn't also emo.

Easy there. While I suppose you might be able to make a case for fugazi, minor threat and less than jake are not anywhere near emo, not in the slightest. I'm not being one of those nitpicking genre nerds either, less than jake is a frickin third wave ska band, it doesn't get much further from emo. Minor threat was straight ahead punk. Nothing emo about them either.

Minor Threat is considered by many to be the first Emo band.
Sure, their sound was punk, but their lyrical content was the precursor of the whining we hear today.

I find it impossible to believe that anyone that's actually listened to minor threat would think that. They were considered the first straight edge band, but emo? Come on. Their lyrical content wasnt whining about girls breaking up with them and they weren't deep and introspective. It was a social diatribe. No, I don't buy it.

Oh god, I love it when people argue over emo. Personally, I quite like a lot of emo music (the older stuff, mainly), but I don't really go for the whole pre-packaged 'emo look'. If you're looking for some good vaguely-emo music, try Cursive.

"Though the original emo scenes were not exclusionary, the modern "emo" scene has developed into a "gay friendly" scene. Though it's unclear whether it's related to the diminished "macho" elements of emo music or the "gay friendly" nature of the scene, it has become commonplace for detractors to use "emo" in combination with popular gay slurs, such as "emo fag"".
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Now THAT"S funny! So true...

Re: Emo
The first emo bands were in the 80's. Emo is just short for emotional hardcore. It's like punk, but not very political and obviously emotional.
Emo bands: Fugazi Minor Threat Husker Du Sunny Day Real Estate Planes Mistaken For Stars Mineral Piebald Indian Summer American Football The Promise Ring Rites of Spring Fire Party Christie Front Drive Texas is the Reason Moss Icon Hot Water Music The Dismemberment Plan Drive Like Jehu Braid (early) Jimmy Eat World
Bands commonly mistaken for emo: AFI Panic At the Disco Fall Out Boy My Chemical Romance Taking Back Sunday Straylight Run Armor For Sleep Chiodos Something Corporate The Used The Starting Line Thrice Hawthorne Heights Funeral For A Friend Finch Brand New Silverstein Death Cab For Cutie
there's more, but that should give you the idea
and its not about whining over relationships, or cutting yourself.

Yeah bands sometimes get mistaken for EMO, but they're really not. Example: Fall Out Boy. They're not emo, but they're still not very good. Their drummer sucks really bad.

I hate to break it to you, but The Mars Volta is definitly not emo. Yeah, emo's listen to it, but emo's also listen to Tool.
So therefor, is Tool emo?
Every other band you listed, even At The Drive In, Mars Volta's former band, is emo.
Get your shit right, man.

these are not emo. And wtf!? do you have a brain stem? You called minor threat emo! are you high? EDIT: if anything i think the influence of new wave affected the evolution of hardcore music by fusing these two together. i think thats how you get emo. If i was to blame any band.i would probally blame the Buzzcocks, but they knew what they were writing and were mature, artistic and professional about it.They wrote so-called more melodic and catchy "punk" songs. They were the first to make punk "pop" sounding. then later on some bands tryed to imitate them, notably Green Day. Not that they did a bad job, persay. For the first ten years, i think Green Day had something to attribute to the word music. Then, of course the tragic cliche'd tale of "fame and fortune" and their drive went smashing down the tube. Then others tryed to imitate green day. Thats my two cents. [This message has been edited by Euromerican (edited 03-17-2006).]

Re: Emo
not sure about the other two, never heard them, but less than jake is ska... emo is basically kids asking for your sympathy. that's all they want, there whole existance revolves around hurting themselves or re-tracing steps of tribulations they didn't handle well, and they want you to feel bad for them because they live off of that. they don't look for an answer with anything, they just want you to feel bad for them....

Re: Emo
Emo bands are all the same. It is all just a phase and should die out within 2 or so years, as all the bands mentioned in that list are doing the same thing as one another, along with every other 'emo' band.
I dislike the term 'emo', as ALL music has some degree of emotional input, whereas this lame punk offshoot is dribble. Pretty much all of it has a theme of negativity - clamped together with shit lyrics. All of these 'emo' bands are rediculous, their live performances are crap compared to say, any metal band. The recordings are voice enhanced, patched, loads of pigshit.
I'm also confused as to why Fugazi are in that list. What are you an idiot?
