In case I can't get my hands on a magnesium strip that is.
Electrically? {DA}

Re: Alternate ignition method for Thermite?
All you need is something that burns vigorously. The Anarchy Cookbook mentions only magnesium (and I assume that's where you got the plan from) merely because the author is a dipshit and has no clue that other pyrotechnic compositions exist.
All of them require oxidizers; Some are easier to obtain than others. Any metal fuel/oxidizer composition that burns slowly enough (read: large enough particles) can ignite thermite. KNO3 and magnesium or alumin, for example. Depending on how finely powdered your thermite is, you can also use road flares and I've heard of some successes from people using glycerin and a permanganate.

Haha, no, not from the Gaybook. Thanks for the info though. I wouldn't put it in BB because it's not for legitamate purposes. {DA}

Re: Alternate ignition method for Thermite?
I just go with a sparkler. I bought this "mini flamer" that works really well too.. it generates 1500 celsius and it takes as much place as a big lighter. Really pleased with it.

Re: Alternate ignition method for Thermite?
DA, next time spice it up with your illegitimate purposes so it's appropriate to the board and entertaining to the readers, if you want xD How it's phrased would fit in to BB, but put in "hood of my rivals car" and it'd fit in great here. But eh, that's personal preference I guess... Sorry for buggin ya.
Anything that generates alot of heat will do really, friend has done it with homemade flash/sparkler

Re: Alternate ignition method for Thermite?
go to Sears or Farm and Fleet and get some potassium permanganate. It is used for water softeners. Then get some glycerin. What you do is you make your pile of thermite. Put a quarter sized pile of the potassium permanganate on top. Make a small indent in the potassium permanganate, and thats where you will pour the glycerin. It will take a while for it to ignite, like 3 minutes I heard, but that will give you time to get away.
Or you can go to a sporting good store or Walmart and get a magnesium fire starter, not totally sure if you could get that to work, but its worth a try.
You may want to take note that at Sears the potassium permanganate is about $45 for 6 pounds, and at Farm and Fleet it is $15 for 5 pounds. So shop around.

Re: Alternate ignition method for Thermite?
Potassium Permanganate+Glycerin.
Make a little "crater" on top of the thermite first,fill with KMNO4 powder, then make another one on top of the KMNO4.
When your ready, pour in a decent amount of Glycerin. In <30seconds you'll have a vigorous reaction followed by another thermite reaction.
