Breaking a Padlock
There is a little padlock that is on a door that I need to break off to get into an abandoned warehouse downtown.
I was wondering if simply a hammer could pop out the lock, also, since noise might be an issue I was going to put a piece of cloth over it to prevent noise, will this help?
Does anyone have any other tips?
It's a pretty generic, average padlock.

Re: Breaking a Padlock
You can make a shim thing for masterlocks out of a empty beercan. Google around for it.

Re: Breaking a Padlock
Beercan shims are usually shit because the metal's too flimsy. Will only work with a loose lock.
Get some bigass boltcutters, with long handles so you can get good leverage. Will be faster, easier, and a hell of a lot quieter than a hammer.

Re: Breaking a Padlock
I might also reccomend a portable acetalyne or mapp torch. Mapp gas wont burn super hot, but it will melt the metal in a couple minutes tops.

Re: Breaking a Padlock
Prolly out of the question, but some kind of acid would be the ultimate solution.

Re: Breaking a Padlock
Like nooner was saying get some bolt cutters and chop the lock off, it's pretty much silent and depending on size you can conceal them in a backpack.

Re: Breaking a Padlock
It would have to have a pretty high molarity to be of any use though. I dont know where you would get acid like that. Maybe you can make it with pool chlorine or something (HCl im thinking of)

Re: Breaking a Padlock
Probably, not in your price range, but use liquid nitrogen.
Purchase a spray mechanism, so you can just concentrate where you spray it. Point it over the padlock, shoot, and break it off like an icicle.
Edit: I decided go to look for prices on this for you http://tinyurl.com/h5q35
They are going to run you like $400-600. So this is definately out of the question...
But remember liquid nitrogen is sold over the counter for things like Dr. Scholl's Wart Remover which come in sprays. These are sold for $25 at your local drug store.

Re: Breaking a Padlock
One thing about liqid nitrogen though, it makes metal more brittle but does it make it any easier to snap? If my understanding of chemistry is right, making the metal very cold wouldnt actually lessen its tensile strength.

It won't "snap" right off, but thats why man made hammers. Edit: There's a difference between making a metal very cold and freezing it. We are trying to freeze the metal and break it off. [This message has been edited by b (edited 03-19-2006).]

meh, I was fucking close enough, douche. i assummed it was nitrogen based cause its called fuckin freeze away or something, but its Dimethyl Ether. that could still work...maybe.

Re: Breaking a Padlock
How much would a good bolt cutter run around?
or at least one that would get the job done
and if it comes down to it, a hammer would work, right?

Re: Breaking a Padlock
I own a pair of bolt cutters which I have used successfully many times.
Buy a pair, mine were 30 dollars and kick ass.
You can even put sections of pipe over the ends of the handles to give yourself more leverage.

hydro ... what ? Unless you're talking about a hippy who met a grizzly end in a vat of HF, you need to get your nomenclature correct. Else ... I'll call IUPAC on yer ass!

XD Asides, I wouldn't put that on the 'easy to procure' list. Look fellers, this doesn't require grand schemes or too much extra linear thinking, thats the kind of buisness that will get you into trouble. There is a straightforward solution to your problem. A pair of bolt cutters will do away with a padlock quite well, assuming you have any degree of arm strength. I don't know what the thickness of the metal is, but I'm just making an assumption that (http://tinyurl.com/rlzac) will do nicely. Assuming theres goodies in the warehouse to make your 20 dollar investment worth it, and even if not, a pair of bolt cutters is a useful tool you should not be without.
