Default how do the slit-type lightswitches in schools work?

how do you turn off those lightswitches that are on the walls in schools and public buildings. you know, the kind that are just slits on the wallplate? is there some sort of key? i would try to stick a knife in there or something but i don't really want to get electrocuted.

I have access to all of the keys in my school I can tell you that the specific key you want to know about is just a u shape. You can use a knife or paperclip and turn off the lights without being electrocuted.

Dude we've had the same light switches since primary school.Just take a dime and flip it up or down.We figured this out in 3rd grade.

I don't really remember if it was a dime or not,but it's the smallest coin so it'll work.

Some take a flat blade and others take a forked one.

Sometimes a house key will work too. I shut off the handicap door opener with it last summer.

There's no more chance of getting electrocuted messing with one of those as there is with a regular light switch becuase that's all they are, only with a shorter actual switch portion and a funny faceplate.

For the most part, anything you can get in there and get a grip with will work. A small slotted screwdriver is probably a good bet.

Get a fork/spoon/spork from the cafiteria and flatten the end handle side, then stick it in there and move it up and down like a switch. I shut off the main hallway lights doing this at my old school. good clean fun.
