Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. Some good news from the warfront:

quote:
U.S., Iraq Launch Massive Air Assault

BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. forces and Iraqi troops launched what the military described as the largest air assault since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion Thursday, targeting insurgent strongholds north of the capital.

The U.S. military said the raid, dubbed Operation Swarmer, was aimed at clearing "a suspected insurgent operating area" northeast of Samarra and was expected to last several days. The
Pentagon said 41 people were arrested but it was not clear if suspected insurgents put up any resistance.

Residents in the targeted area said there was a heavy U.S. and Iraqi troop presence and large explosions could be heard in the distance. The U.S. military said there was no firing or bombing from the air and the source of the blasts was not known.

"More than 1,500 Iraqi and coalition troops, over 200 tactical vehicles, and more than 50 aircraft participated in the operation," the military statement said.

The U.S. command in Baghdad said it was the largest number of aircraft used to insert troops and the largest number of troops inserted by air, although larger numbers of troops overall have been involved in previous operations.

I want to see this every day. Massive daily bombing campaigns until the terrorist attacks stop. This is the road to victory over the insurgency. We should not send our men over there to fight with their hands behind their backs to fulfill the ridiculous politically correct whims of the liberals who want the US to lose. They do not need to be sitting ducks for IEDs and snipers. We must stay on the offensive.

I would be happy to see YOU on the front.
Do you think the bombings will do any good? NO! They will get angrier.

Typical apeasement attitude. The idea is to kill the terrorists, not make friends with them. Your logic is ass backwards. Staying on the offensive not only kills more terrorists but also shows our determination and strength.

Your ploy to conceed to the terrorists would make us look weak and give greater encouragement to them. You have a defeatist attitude because you want the US to lose. Why should we take advice on how to win from someone who wants us to lose? You're weak and pathetic and your illogic represents the entire anti-war movement.

Its just ridiculous that how out of control the left is. If you would shut the fuck up and let the professionals fight the war without your 24/7 incessent whining it would make things a lot easier. I shit on you and everything you stand for. You are trying to destroy my fucking country and I'm not going to take it.

What do you suggest? Besides an immediate pullout, which would be nice, but obviously isn't going to happen.

I don't see why angering insurgents bothers you - any anger they have over and above the anger that makes them shoot our soldiers is pretty irrelevant. Once they're shooting at us, their feelings aren't really my concern.

Now, if it comes out that we're hitting some kind of built-up civilian area that also has some insurgents in it... well, that's a problem. But if we're limiting the strike to insurgents, then this is the right way to go. Patrolling obviously isn't doing us any good - we need to bring them to open battle. IED's and snipers nip at us, but poorly-trained cells with AK's simply can't match the US military when it's applied with focus, force, and discretion.

In Vietnam there was bombing by B-52s that was dubbed 'Rolling Thunder'. The military called it carpet bombing.

It was of course done to kill the Viet Cong and the North Vietnam Army Regulars.

Bush is so concerned about the low approval rating that he is seeing about his handling of the war so he wakes up and decides that killing more innocent people will win approval of at least a few -- like Buttthrax.

It is a political move by Bush to use the war to his own political end.

Buttthrax seems to think the war is going swell in Iraq. How fucking stoopid does that make Buttthrax look.

Well you have to looka at the bigger picture, indiscriminate bombing of civilians might seem inhumane but that's how you win a war, without the mass slaughter of Germans, Italians and Japanese civilians the Allies would have way more trouble winning WWII.
Just think about the massive bombings on all major Japanese cities, the bombing of Rome in which thousands of unarmed civilians were massacred in the name of "freedom" and of course Dresden where the so-called "good guys" destroyed a whole city and about 150.000 civilians in the process.

All we need to do to end the insurgency is to effectively patrol Iraq borders and stop the supply line. The terrorists are funded by other countries and groups operating out of other countries. We've stopped a lot of the Syrian gun flow, but the insurgents are still getting their AKs, C4, etc.

You fucking arse, you have no idea of the concept of psychological warfare. The only way to win in Iraq is by finding out who some of the main famous terrorist leaders are by gathering intelligence, and then whilst they are all praying in a mosque to send in a squad of special forces to slit they and their family's throats in front of everyone. Then who would dare start shit. no one cares about bombs, because they don't care who they fall on, kill one important person and they'll think it could be them next.

The use of the phrase "the largest air assault operation" was clearly crucial, raising visions of a massive bombing campaign.

In fact, all the phrase meant is that more helicopters were deployed to airlift the troops into the area than in previous such operations.

The 50 "aircraft" that had been deployed were not combat jets blasting insurgent targets but helicopters ferrying in the forces. There was no rocketing or bombing from the sky.

In this instance, key terrain may have been seized but no enemy forces were apparently engaged.

Unusually, high-quality photographs and video footage of the initial deployment were made available to the press towards the end of Day One of what was billed as a campaign that would last several days. Some international media were given unusually swift military "embeds" to the area.

I simply think that the war can be fought in a much smarter fashion than it is right now, if Bush would get his head out of his ass, but, like you, he is eager to kill. I suppose you would support execution of all of the people in prison, just so we can get rid of the guilty ones as well, huh?. bloodthirsty barbarian.

Angering insurgents doesnt concern me, but getting the entire region pissed at us doesnt do much for us either. It creates even more fanatics who kill themselves to kill us, thereby dragging out the entire war effort. I want it to be over.

My concern is the death of people who have nothing to do with the war. Some will argue that bin Laden didnt show the same regard, but thats the difference between him and us. I dont think we should be willing to wipe out mass amounts of civilians just to get to our objective.

However, I do agree that patrolling isnt doing any good. We should resort to guerilla tactics, sneak attacks, and the like, but one of the biggest problems with it is the lack of intel, which we sorely need. That being said, I dont think bombing the hell out of massive amounts of country makes up for it.

I'm not saying that killing terrorists is a bad thing, absolutely not, but when innocent civilians are dying, the Army loses trust amongst the civilian population.

You're saying the Americans should constantly bomb Iraq and kill terrorists> Well that will only create more terrorists and eventually start a vicious cycle where Arabs will be honored to take the place of the guy that just died.

The trick is to not only kill terrorists, but become friends with the locals. Let them trust you so they can give you any information they know.

Well let's see:

quote:

On Scene: How Operation Swarmer Fizzled
By Brian Bennett and Al Jallam
Time Magazine

Friday 17 March 2006

Not a shot was fired, or a leader nabbed, in a major offensive that failed to live up to its advance billing.

Four Black Hawk helicopters landed in a wheat field and dropped off a television crew, three photographers, three print reporters and three Iraqi government officials right into the middle of Operation Swarmer. Iraqi soldiers in newly painted humvees, green and red Iraqi flags stenciled on the tailgates, had just finished searching the farm populated by a half-dozen skinny cows and a woman kneading freshly risen dough and slapping it to the walls of a mud oven.

The press, flown in from Baghdad to this agricultural gridiron northeast of Samarra, huddled around the Iraqi officials and US Army commanders who explained that the "largest air assault since 2003" in Iraq using over 50 helicopters to put 1500 Iraqi and US troops on the ground had netted 48 suspected insurgents, 17 of which had already been cleared and released. The area, explained the officials, has long been suspected of being used as a base for insurgents operating in and around Samarra, the city north of Baghdad where the bombing of a sacred shrine recently sparked a wave of sectarian violence.

But contrary to what many many television networks erroneously reported, the operation was by no means the largest use of airpower since the start of the war. ("Air Assault" is a military term that refers specifically to transporting troops into an area.) In fact, there were no air strikes and no leading insurgents were nabbed in an operation that some skeptical military analysts described as little more than a photo op. What's more, there were no shots fired at all and the units had met no resistance, said the US and Iraqi commanders.

The operation, which doubled the population of the flat farmland in one single airlift, was initiated by intelligence from Iraq security forces, says Lt Col Skip Johnson commander of the 187 Battalion, 3rd Combat Brigade of the 101st Airborne. "They have the lead," he said to reporters at the second stop of the tour. But by Friday afternoon, the major targets seemed to have slipped through their fingers. Iraqi Army General Abdul Jabar says that Samarra-based insurgent leader Hamad el Taki of Mohammad's Army was thought to be in the area, and Iraqi intelligence officers were still working to compare known voice recordings and photographs with the prisoners in custody.

With the Interior Ministry's Samarra commando battalion, the soldiers had found some 300 individual pieces of weaponry like mortars, rockets and plastic explosives in six different locations inside the sparsely populated farming community of over 50 square miles and about 1,500 residents. The raids also uncovered high-powered cordless telephones used as detonators in homemade bombs, medical supplies and insurgent training manuals.

Before loading up into the helicopters for a return trip to Baghdad, Iraqi and American soldiers and some reporters helped themselves to the woman's freshly baked bread, tearing bits off and chewing it as they wandered among the cows. For most of them, it was the only thing worthwhile they'd found all day.

OK:

!. No massive daily bombing campaigns.

2. Not even 1 shot fired.

3. Not the bisggest Air Assault so far in the war.

4. No big insurgent leaders found.

5. No large caches of weapons found in a 1500 square mile area.

6. No air strikes at all.

7. 1500 US and Iraqi troops put on the ground by 50 helicopters.

8. 24 insurgents taken into custody.

9. The operation, which doubled the population of the flat farmland in one single airlift, was initiated by intelligence from Iraq security forces.

no massive bombing of terrorists.

More lies from the Bush Regime. Weeell it sure seems like it to bolster his approval rating for the way that he has handled this war. But a new Harris poll out says his approval rating has fallen more to just 33% saying they approve of his efforts on the war front.

They found 300 insurgent weapons in 6 different places. Did they really need 1500 troops to do it? Sure, why not. There was no resistance because of the overwhelming number of forces. So they kept some 24 of the terrorists? Great. It takes less than that to make for a really bad day in Iraq.

Sounds like a goddamn success to me. They cleaned house and threw the American people a bone. We want to see this type of thing daily on TV, not the liberals pissing and complaining about Bush. Typical leftist bullshit. I will give you that the American people would have liked to see more action, but don't try to paint it as an unsuccessful operation. Even if they killed 5000 people you would be whining about the "poor, innocent" terrorists. You will find a way spin any situation around and find the United States at fault for something. Same bullshit, different headline. This shows that we are making progress in Iraq and thats why you don't like it.

Pathetic is the anti-American protestors like you, not the military.

Its obvious you care more about being right and proving 'leftists' wrong then actually winning the war. This shows just how little progress you are actually making. Only a blind nationalist like you could turn this into a victory.

It almost sounds like you don't think these raids just target really general area's where they believe terrorists to be, and as such, obviously kill a fair amount of civilians.

But no, that would just be stupid.

Interesting. Earlier Hacker claimed that civilians were killed in the operation. Then he claimed that not a single shot was fired. I don't believe either of these egregious claims.

Thanks for not answering the question, dipshit. If you say it was unsuccessful, then what would you prefer those soldiers have done that day? Sit out in the desert and do nothing? There is 300 fewer weapons the enemy can use to kill our troops and dozens of terrorists on the way to Abu Gharib. Sounds good to me.

Rofl, what the fuck? How could you not infer from my post that I thought it was unsuccessful? I would prefer that your soldiers actually went out into the communities they are supposed to protect, and made some connections with the locals, and I don't know, gathered intelligence actually protected them? I could understand if the US administration, and you, thought there was a perceived threat and then realized and admitted it was a failure... But trying to make this out to be a big success just shows to everybody how fucking arrogant and ignorant you are. You got two dozen 'terrorists' off to Abu Ghraib? It seems highly plausible all you did was grab the mother fucker with the biggest beard and pretend he was a terrorist so you didn't make an ass out of yourself. How many will replace them because you showed your ass?

And 300 weapons isn't shit.

You're just a fucking douchebag, bottom line. If you can't understand that it does help to win the war to stage an offensive then you don't know shit. Either that or you do understand it but actually want the US to lose. You demented terrorist piece of shit.

And yet you defend Bush whose Military lied to Pat Tillman's family about the way he died and they did it for political reasons.

And Bush has lied often himself. About knowing Abramoff. About knowing Ken Lay. He denied that he made the statemebnt about where Osama was.

Gee the guy lies a lot.

What is it about Bush that makes people that remain loyal to Bush so loyal?

Oh and you know those 300 weapons they found? I wouldn't be surprised if the Iraqi Government hid them there themselves.

I mean geez those guys even have their own death squads in violation of that brand spanking new constitution Bush is so pleased with.

No but I mean they said they did intelligence and they used more helicopters than they took prisoners.

And they manned the operation with a fuck load more men than the population of men in the are that they assaulted.

But You know I am really glad that no Iraqi's gun went off and accidentally wounded anyone.

You know that happened quite a few times in the initial joint Iraqi US patrols.

Oh Buttthrax I thought you liked the Bull Shit.

It seems that Bush spreads it quite a bit.

But it was a lie. I was watching the news about the operation and stepped out of the room and upon returning there was news about civilians killed but it was a bombing in Baghdad and I just heard part of it and thought it was collaterall killings.

So I should be and am ashamed for not correcting that.

But I blame Bush and the lies his Regime tells as having a bad effect on me.

But Buttthrax I gotta say that your loyalty to Bush is really amazing. Really hard core to still stand for him.

I do not know where it comes from. You should post a thread about you unwavering loyalty but don't say it is patriotism.

Cause what Bush has done to the country is not constitution based and not even legal in my opinion.

If you seriously think civilians don't get killed in bombing raids like that, you're an idiot, end of discussion.

Anyway I heard this 'swarmer' operation isn't nearly as large scale as they're making it out to be, and it's more of a pr campaign, so thats good I guess.

Also, who the fuck cares about 300 weapons, every fucking country in the world has weapons. They were supposed to be finding wmds in Iraq, and now they're probably patting themselves on the back for finding a bunch of ak's and rocket launchers, which doesn't mean shit.

Unfortunately it is not that kind conflict anymore, so their show of Military strength is just that, a show. I am sure that a small number of the dreaded Insurgents will be killed in the showcase action, but that will be all it is. Coinsidently it comes at the anniversary of the invasion, or not. Perhaps its meant to bolster waning support of the American people, who by now is shrinking by the week much to the horror of the stupidly arrogant Bush Administration. I guess their bullshit has streched as far as it can go with alot of the American people, finally, just as it has with most of the World (a long time ago).
The perps of the violence we all see on CNN or CBC is, for the most part, no longer the "Insurgents", or other groups of terror. It is now the secular groups within Iraqi society namely the Sunni and/or Shia who have distrusted each other for generations and only needed a little push to escalate into a civil conflict. The Insurgents achieved in part what they had wanted to do.
By destroying the Mosque they enticed the secular groups to start fighting each other rather than placing their energy into forming a rudamentary Government or rebuilding what the Americans destroyed.
Despite what the DESPERATE Bush Administration is frantically telling a hostile World, a civil war is just around the corner (Bush's worst nightmare).
This is a big problem for the American Military because they cant re4ally do anything about it. That is aside from scapegoating someone else. They contend that its Iran helping the Insurgent movement, or the Syrians, or the Taliban (they are making a comeback LOL), or Al Queada(sp), or some other obscure group that hates the West or "freedom", and even the media for only reporting the "negative" aspects (Bush is truly desperate) of the stupidity.
The Americans cant really do anything if civil war starts (some say it already has). If they use force on one group it will be seen as if they (US) are supporting that side thus losing their (the other group) support for a unified Iraq, so all they can do is watch it happen and impotently try and calm both sides down before Bush's pathetic dream is flushed down the toilet just as the hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars have been. With the buddy's of Bush weakly trying to justify it to a hostile World and an increasingly unbelieving nation (USA).
