who do you think is the best military in the world, and why. Please also list runner-ups and reasons. (i am referring to military branches, [navy, army, special forces are all different]).

The Special Forces and SEALs are extremely specialized and highly trained fighting units. Green Berets are taught how to survive in the jungle, how to thrive in foreign areas, and how to conduct guerilla tactics. Rangers are the first guys in, usually the first to make contact, and they're just some crazy fuckers, jumping out of planes and shit. The SEALs do a lot of stuff with water (naturally because of being involved with the Navy). This could include underwater demolitions work, securing hostile areas on a beachhead or like say on river, usually covertly. When I think of the SEALs, I also think about Black Ops. stuff, although that's not necessarily always the case.

I honestly only know a brief amount about the whole lot of military occupations, and the limited knowledge I have is mostly from reading and informational programming. Still, when I think of elite fighting American forces, it's SF and the SEALs.
I do think, however, that all too often credit is not given to the average Joe of the infantry. He is the bulk of all ground forces, afterall.

The US military is obviously the best-funded in the world. The British and Australian SAS have the best reputations in Counter-Terrorism, for good reason, though few people mention the Israeli military. They've taken out Syrian tanks in the 80's (old Soviet hardware) with Civil War guns purchased from the Smithsonian.

not to mention israeli pilots taking down mig-15s and 17's with former WWII p-51's in the 50s.

... but seriously, the United States Marine Corps.

Marines kick ass every day of the week in Iraq.

I'll be the first one to admit never even being in close proximity to any combat actions whatshowever, and I'm not jotting down an opinion based on movies, books and video games.

The "best" military is the one that has the most experience. That would probably be the US military, since our politicians are always meddling in other countries' affairs and starting pointless wars.

all army's may be known for diffrent factors, like bomb demo or any kind of specialization

I do agree with the guy that mentioned the IDF. i also happen to think that they have the best intelligence network too. They're a small country, surrounded by hostile's, and havent been wiped out yet.

Forgive a combat noob for asking, but, what experience of the US military are you talking about? They haven't fought a modern war machine since World War II. Vietcong forces were somewhere in between, but still not nearly as advanced as the US army.

And a lot less manpower. Not to mention technology etc. No offence, this years "Birthright" pilgrimage to Israel was protected by some really tough motherfuckers from the Israeli specops, but they are still nothing compared to China's million-man army, Russia+America's military technology and the French Foreign Legions individual toughassness.

America's got the farthest jump on Technology. I don't know or will start to guess at which is the best branch of military...

But there's no question about it, there's no one country that could take the U.S.

The Puerto Rican National Guard is pretty badass.

Many, as do I, still consider the Wehrmacht as the most effective fighting force. They are not specialized in anything (Most forces have some specialty in which they excel)except killing the enemy.

Special notice must then be give to the LSSAH 12th Panzer Division. They owned the brits and amis south of Cean, giving the Hitler Jugend enough time to evacuate.

I think the deciding factor in a war with the U.S. would be technology and manpower (duh). For now the United States seems to have the lead in technology, but not in manpower. Let's say for example China were to get better technology(which with their rise in economic status isn't a too far away possibility) and decided they wanted to fight the United States. All nukes aside, that would be one nasty war, but of course nukes would be involved and the main deciding factor would be who pulles the trigger first...scary stuff. Not only that but they have us outnumbered in Military personnel number.


I can't believe we actually have one of these threads...there is no 'best' only more 'capable.' The history of war has taught us that being the most 'capable' does not ensure victory...hence Vietnam.

War against the unseen insurgent is the modern war. Most of our weaponry was designed for a full on confrontation with the Soviets, you're right, but we are now changing our tactics and technology to better suit said war on terrorists, insurgents, assassins, and others.

Precision here is the key. Despite however high tech our cluster munitions and anti-tank weaponry may have seemed, I think that they are in some parts of this war, how exactly they are intended to be used, are rather obsolete. In a lot of ways, this is an image war (so much of this is due to advancements in communication technology). Much collateral damage is now largely unnacceptable. That team of riflemen with their ACOG sights who can shoot their rifles to MOA accuracy will zap an insurgent from blocks away.

Of course, in reality it doesn't actually work like this, but many units in the US Army and Marine Corps are moving more towards a doctirne of that nature. In the unit of a marine friend of mine, everybody has 4x ACOGs on their M16A4s. In fact, I was talking to another friend of mine in the 10th mountain, and in his words a lot of infantry units are now feeling more like "starship troopers" than what peoples traditional idea of the Army is. ALICE is a thing of the past, everybody uses MOLLE gear now. Everybody has AIMPOINT optics and team leaders have ACOGs. Even the SAW gunners have thos Elcan optical sights on their weapons. These "leg" infantry units are becoming more and more like those high speed SF units. Why?

I have explained before that this is a result of the clinton era defense budget cuts. With dropping recruit numbers and more people doing rear echelon jobs for college money the infantry had no choice but to do more with less.

The solution at this point seems to be to have a highly trained and technically assisted infantrymen. I was struck after watching a documentary on the military channel about green berets in Afghanistan how similarly their operators, who were blending into the local civilian population, were acting exactly like police officers (albiet without much of the restraint that most of the LEOs stateside show).

Make no mistake, the modern war is very different from many peoples concepts of what the modern war would be. In my opinion, world war 3 has already been fought. That was the war on communism fought of course by image, propaganda, information warfare, and proxy. World war 4 is the current war on terrorism, which is no more of a "war" than the "war" on communism or the "war" on drugs is. It's actions of image, propaganda, information warfare, proxy. The same kind of war that political campaigns fight during an election. Actual combat occurs much less on this battlefield.

Which brings me to what in my opinion is the biggest failure of this "war on terror". We can't fight it. It's like trying to slice seawater. We have to play it like we played commmunism. This "war" will be won by image, propaganada, information warfare, proxy, and the intense efforts of our highly trained and technically assisted military infantrymen when the situation calls. Put simply, we are moving closer towards the "dagger in the dark" than the "1000 swords at dawn".

While you've got nationalism and inter service and inter regimental rivalry - I think it would probably have to be the United States Marine Corp.

Mainly because of it's combination of size, funding, toughness and training.

They are probably less like SEALs and more like CIA used to be however, in the kind of missions they take, but they have been used militarily as the SEALs are.

Oh yeah, to any of the oldtimers here, a little update. I'm currently stationed up at MCAS Cherry Point, and I'll be permanently stationed at Camp pendleton as a 6541, MEU tech. I work on the ordnance and machine guns on AH-1 Cobras.

Heh, seeing that reminds me that my ship date is closing near. I'm tingling with anticipation. My recruiter was stationed at cherry point before he became a recruiter BTW.

Also I have a friend in the 5th who went to Iraq last weekend. I think he's set to rotate back about the same time I get done with boot camp. It just boggles my mind to think that these friends of mine are now combat veterans.

The job is cool, They say I'll be in these forward operating landing strips set up close to the front lines so the choppers and AV/8 Harriers can refill their payloads without going anywhere. Im specializing in the helicopters weaponry, like the Miniguns and 20-25 mill cannons. Things are badass.

The base is like a small college campus, only with barbed wire and armed guards in certain places. It's chill.

Freelance, whats your shipdate again?

Wow.. you have no clue. Ok, "Special Forces" is a title given to all, you got it, special forces. Rangers, Delta, MCRecon, they're all special forces, there isn't a group called the Special Forces.
Rangers are not the first ones in. Nor are seals, or infantry. Know how units arrive and "tada! Look a base camp waiting for us!" Yea, the SeaBees go in first.

Since you are in the military you should know that Green Berets are Special Forces. I live on Bragg, where they hold selection and all that good shit. I'm maybe two blocks away from where they stay for selection.

i think the vietcong were very brillant considering thier lack of technology or funding. i mean they has underground tunnel networks all over south vietnam and thier use of simple booby traps was dirty but worked wonders for them.

You can't compare AMries to one another like that. Each one is specialized so that it works best for it country. You can't compare SEALs, Special Forces, and Marines either, because they all have different niches. SEALs, underwater/ water based ops, recon, etc... Marines, kill, grill, all for the thrill, front lines, recon, etc... Special Forces, training rebel forces and befriending them, recon, etc... Also they work together alot on ops in which each branch brings it's own special training and experience. Oh yea and the israeli army is supposedly the best because they train all it's population so even if they have a small standing army, their reserve army is probably the greatest for the countries small size. But I agree that the US is probably top dog mostly because of it's technology and training. Semper Fi
