Alright, sadly, the Consolidated Anime Recommendations thread was unwittingly deleted the last time the forums were pruned. I am going to start that back up again with this thread, except I will also include helpful links and such for downloading, getting more information (including reviews), good sites for purchasing anime, and so on.

So, feel free to post anime recommendations and/or links, and either I or Mahimaki will edit this original post to include the information. Eventually, the thread will get archived or submitted as a text file for posterity.

Here is how the categories are being defined:

Classic
Anime that have stood the test of time in terms of popularity, merit, and impact on the medium as a whole.

Action
Focus is on combat, gunfights, or fisticuffs in general. If high technology is involved, it goes in Sci-Fi/Giant Robots.

Comedy
Main focus on amusement, jokes, or parodies.

Drama
Main focus is on the emotions and/or interactions of specific characters with one another, not necessarily in solely romantic situations. Frequently set in war-torn or otherwise hostile environments, but action is not sole focus of the show.

Family
Main focus is on the simpler things of life: exploration, imagination, and so on. This does not mean kiddie shows, but rather shows that could be seen and enjoyed by almost everyone in the family.

Hentai
Main focus is on sexual, perverted, or otherwise erotic subject matter. This category encompasses all Hentai, from soft/hardcore porn to tentacle-rape to furries and beyond.

Occult/Horror
Main focus is on something strange, scary and/or mysterious, usually with ghosts, spirits, or demons. Also includes shows that are just plain weird.

Romance
Main focus is on the romantic relationship of one or more pair of characters. Typically, the theme boils down to "love conquers all," but not always.

Sci-Fi/Giant Robots
Main focus has a lot to do with the high technology present in the show. Spaceships, star colonies, and mecha combat define this category.

Unclassified
A temporary category for anime that have yet to be classified into the others.


Putting anime into strict categories is really kind of difficult, so try and choose the predominate aspect of the show and go with that.

Alright, cleaned up the list a bit, merged Occult and Horror into a single category, added He Is My Master and Cat Soup to Comedy. I will also start to take the time the comb through the abundant number of links already posted but have not been added to the master list.

Okay, someone had to bring it up to have this resource as complete as possible. Hentai, only anime I can think of is Bible Black.

As for hentai dojinshi/magna, I would reccomend www.dojinshi.it or www.unlimitedhentai.com all free. www.unlimtedhentai.com has some voting but www.dojinshi.it dosen't.

finishing Gunslinger Girl has made me think a while about where it fits in best, it's full of action... chalked full.

But on the other hand the plot is the most vital point of it, there's a few others already on the list that i think fit with it.

how about a action/drama grouping?
it seems it would be more specific to some titles where as others (ie, perfect blue) are actually full blown dramas

Actually, you are probably right about the grouping. I've been struggling over that question for a while, since there is obviously more to shows like Noir, Samurai Champloo, and Full Metal Alchemist than merely their action. While action may or may not be their predominant aspect, it might be more fair to merge them together to acknowledge their hybrid nature.

Anyway, I'll let Mahimaki make that call, though.

Yeah, shows like Inuyasha, get less of an action and more of a drama as the show goes on.

How come my computer won't let me download ANY of the torrents, I'm saving it as a torrent document, but it won't open, and it's frustrating.

Biggest one is probably not having a torrent or having Linux or something. Never heard of the second problem before.

The second one, a while ago, I was fixing my preferences for RealPlayer and ever since, I can't open .rm files. I hate Realplayer. Then again, it's a simple job of going into tools and doing that stuff, but I can't be arsed.

both were pretty kick ass, the dub to shadow skill got annoying at times, but it was far from horrible

You can look for AMV's that feature Elfen Lied, or you can snag a torrent of a single episode, it's small enough to be manageable on dial-up, yet tasty enough to leave you wanting more.
