My foods teacher made us cook fiddleheads once in class...
very few people could swallow them...
on my first attempt i put it in my mouth and chewed it a little and was contemplating on whether or not to swallow it when... BAM! i gagged on it and spit it out into the garbage and startead convulsing....
my second attempt was somewhat better...
i put it in my mouth and was going to swallow it like a pill... but when it got about 6" down my throat i gagged accidentally and hurled it into the sink 2' to the front of me....

its the coiled young frond of any of various ferns, some of which are considered a delicacy when cooked. in this sense, its also called a crosier

Still don't know what the heck that is. I know what a fern is, but that's just about it. You'd think I'd know more. My pops a chef. O well. He taught me how to make fogacci bread the other night.
