Thickness of armor plate, size of the main gun, maximum speed of vehicle, range of shell, fuel range of vehicle, size of crew, position on the battlefield. Those are off the top of my head, there are probably more.
Thought about it some more, the main difference between a tank and a self propelled gun is that a tank is a fighting vehicle, a SPG is just a piece of artillery that can move under it's own power. The tank is at the front, the SPG is behind the lines, shooting over the front at the enemy. Where a tank might have a gun as big as a 105mm, normally the caliber is smaller (M1A1 has a 120mm) so the shell can travel faster and slice through the opposing armor. A SPG starts out at 105mm and goes up from there, getting rather large (203mm and up), but the standard is around 155mm.
