Ammo type
What kind of ammo is this? it looks like a hollow point but has five 'shards' along the sides. It fits in a .38 revolver. I think it may be illegal, but Im not sure. Any ideas as to what this ammo is?

Re: Ammo type
Maybe a mod could move this to Weapons and Combat. (hint hint wink wink nudge nudge)
In any case, does this mystery shell have a makers mark on the bottom near the primer? What do you mean by shards? Many hollow points are 'serrated' into either 5 or 6 sections and are definitely legal.

Re: Ammo type
it may be what was known as a black cat or cop killer. they were basicly a mini explosive elephant slug. they were banned because there only use was to kill people. they worked by first penetrating the body then exploding. pretty scary shit.
chao for now, MM

Probabaly some type of common factory hollow point. The "shards" along the sides result in the manufactering process. Copper is wrapper around and over the lead core. What markings are there there on the bottom of the case? (the butt of the case by the primer) quote: it may be what was known as a black cat or cop killer
Not in a thirty eight. AKA Black cat = incendarary, AKA Cop killer = armor piercing. The media made the mistake (not a surprise) in the early 90's of deeming winchester "Black Talons" as "cop killers" lol. When in actually they were a ordinary hollow point self defense ammunition. On a episode of cops the other week, some plain clothes NY officer pulled some kids off their bikes. One had a 4-6" stainless revolver. The officer made this comment, "hollow point ammunition, these are designed to penatrate our vests." Hahahahahahaha what a moron! I couldn't stop laughing after i heard that for atleast a minute. Re: Ammo type
The only thing that makes a bullet illegal is if, it is made from bronze or feris material and is loaded into a pistol cartrege.
Black talons are not banned. They were taken off the market by Winchester to avoid negative company immage and replaced with the SXT round, which is the exact same bullet without the baked on black coating.

nobody ever said that black talons were banned. they said that black cats were banned but not black talons. all that was said reguarding black talons is that the media made a mistake in what they said about them.

And we have long since established that not only is the media largely ignorant of technical matters but also quite possibly operating with less-than-noble intentions in some cases. Ignorace breeds ignorance.
