"Lightsaber" Input needed
OK. i had this fkin amazing idea the other day, way back in highschool i was in science and we were using some resistance wire recording resistances, like a fool i turned the powerpacks up full way when my mate's hand was on it, sliced of both his fingers in the cleanest cut i ever did see, i was thinking the other day while fencing about how lightsabers were made in the starwars stories, a little research later and i discovered that the way lucas thought up, though ingenious is impossible. Here's my idea: Make a hilt which is a powerfull battery, instead of a blade have some thick high resistance wire OR length of material the same size as the blade and running several smaller wires up there, you'r input please.

Re: "Lightsaber" Input needed
Basically you want a massive length of super-hot nicrome wire, then. That isn't feasible for a number of reasons. First, it would not be sturdy at all. Once you get more than about three inches of the stuff it becomes less of a lightsaber and more of an electric whip. Also, it will cut only material that it can readily melt or burn through. It will take paper and leaves and the top layer of your skin, but very little else without prolonged contact. Also, battery technology does not yet exist for a battery that would be that small yet put out that sheer amount of wattage for more than a few seconds.

Re: "Lightsaber" Input needed
Hmm..It might be kind of similar to a taser. You should probably look into that.

Re: "Lightsaber" Input needed
Much more feasible would be to buy a multi megawatt pulsed laser and just shine it at your enemies. Only problem is, you don't get the visual effects because said lasers are UV for their much higher energy. But it would be funny to see the look on someone's face as their arm is perforated by several thousand little dots. Too bad they would bleed to death before they felt any pain from it.

Try a laser in a shaped magnetic field.

Re: "Lightsaber" Input needed
Or you could get a copper tube & wrap the wire around it & hook it up to your power sorce. That would be bad ass!!!

Re: "Lightsaber" Input needed
hmn... so the brightest idea so far is an extension cable
*********************************************"If you strike me down i will become more powerfull than you can ever imagine"
"I am the master, you are the apprentice, the circle is complete" "Draw you'r lightsaber old man" "Hold on a minute darth, just gotta plug it in" ********************************************

Re: "Lightsaber" Input needed
You could always just lash your enemy with the cord. Maybe you could strangle them with it if there are no outlets around.

Why do people ask that, they will never make a light saber so get over it.

Re: "Lightsaber" Input needed
that lightsaber sounded like a foam cutter... i dont think you could do much damage with that...
maybe a wooden rod is more effective...

Re: "Lightsaber" Input needed
This really should be moved to the weapons forum. It has no place here even though I have always wondered how light sabers would work if there was such a thing.

Re: "Lightsaber" Input needed
You could use a series of capacitors, loading the wire and reloading each other, or maybe a generator, but that'd be too big. If lasers are to be used, i must remind you that green ones are visible.

Re: "Lightsaber" Input needed
A capacitor bank would power the device for a few seconds at best. Capacitors discharge quickly by nature - That would be no better than a battery that the thing would beat flat in thirty seconds anyway. I'm getting tired of tripping over this topic so I'm moving it to Weapons and Combat.

There's also Monophiliment wire but its extremley expensive to make and currently they can onyl produce about an inch of the stuff.
