i know you just cant go into a gun shop with a fist full of cash and ask for a glock or something and just walk out? or do u?
is there a process where the cops check your record and home and stuff like that, or is there a waiting period?

It varies in some states, but here in New Mexico it's pretty simple. You pick the gun, fill out a form, the dealer makes a phone call, you pay, you take the gun. If the background check system is busy or isn't working, it could take a few hours to several days. Usually it only takes a few minutes.

As rlpinca said, it is different in some states. However, the brady bill states that a buyer must wait 7 days while a background check is being preformed. Some states, like nebraska and new mexico had similar mesures in place before the brady bill was passed, so their systems were grandfathered, and therefore the 7 day wait does not apply there.

If you were to come here, you would have to establish immigrant alien status before you could purchace firearms. And even then you would have to report each purchace to your case worker.
