Hollow point ammunition
Does anyone know how I can go about making hollow-point ammo, because the're pretty expensive to buy down in the burrough. Regular para's usually cost me 2 each, and I'm happy to pay. But when i wanted some hollow-point's the Geezer says 10 each and that's jus takin' the piss! I have access to a lee press and the usual gear for handgun reloading but I haven't been able to knock out sum hollow-points. I've tried drillin out both lead and copper heads but the result of which left me with a blocked shooter when fired. Is there some special technique or size? any help wud be appreceiated.

Re: Hollow point ammunition
I do believe the trick is to use a wide bit and not to drill very deep. If you drill too deep the round will expand in the barrel, which is obviously bad. Making your own hollow points is probably a futile gesture, though. Unless you put a lot of time and measurement into it you will never get the points centered exactly and each round will be different. They won't be accurate at all.

I would agree with Zero. Otherwise see if you can make friends with some nutcase in another country that would be willing to ship them over to you.

Re: Hollow point ammunition
Because the rifling imparts a spin onto the bullet, you will probably never make as good a hollowpoint as you can buy. Just by being a half a millimeter off of center will give you a heavy side and as soon as it leaves the barrel the centrifugal force will throw it off to who knows where.
Maybe if you had a lathe you could get a little closer to center. Other than that you aren't going to get there with a hand drill. The depth of the hole is very important also. Drill too deep and like Zero said the bullet will either expand and lock in the barrel or you could just blow through the bottom of the bullet and lock that one up too.
Go easy and just cross-top the rounds. That's the way they used to do it before hollow points. Works about the same and doesn't cost you any more than regular rounds. Might give you a feed problem in an automatic though, catching the feed chute with the boogered up tip.

Re: Hollow point ammunition
why would you want hollowpoints for anyway? it seems uneccessarily cruel to use them for hunting (werent they banned by the geneva convention?) and i don't see much other use.

Re: Hollow point ammunition
well for self defense, they do more damage (most cases) and they don't over penetrate as often. Meaning less risk of a bystander getting hit by shot that already passed through the bad guy. but in england i don't know...

Re: Hollow point ammunition
The point of hollow point's is that they can't be traced back to the firearm by ballistics. They flatten on impact so it is virtually impossible to match it against another bullet as the bullets will be different.

Re: Hollow point ammunition
Using a hollowpoint more cruel in hunting? No, The extra expansion of the round as it impacts causes more tissue damage, a greater impact size causing bleed out to happen at a quicker rate. The Full metal jacketeted rounds such as the nato 5.56 or .223 are designed to wound a combatant and take them out of the fight. In turn that causes another combatant to have to help his wounded ally. Two less men one shot. If you hunted with a nato approved round, the animal would be untrackable in many cases, as it would probably make it a mile or more away from the actual shooting site. Less bleeding would allow the animal to survive longer, causing the pain to last longer. If the animal is lucky and the lungs are hit, it dies in less than 10 minutes from eithe blood or air collapsing the lungs. If the liver is hit? death could come in minutes or hours. The hollow point round would eliminate needless suffering.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Who or where did you get this crap information from? #1 Hollow points can be traced back through ballastic testing just as easy as any other round on the market. #2 Any bullet will flatten on impact, hollow or not if it hits a hard suface. A hollow point is designed to expand in soft tissue. Thus creating a larger wound channel. Reducing the chances of over penatration as compared to a non hollow point bullet.

Nope. They were designed to kill. That's the whole idea. Shoot to wound? Feh.

Poop, ur killing me...I'm laughing so hard, I'm making all kinds of typos cuz I can't see through the tears... LMAO!!!!
Simple solution, if they are availible, by lead wad-cutters. Reverse and insert in case. It's getting harder to find wad-cutters that don't have a flat base, but there are serval manufactuers that still produce the old inverted-cone base.
Where do people get this garbage?
Sheez... If u really want bullets that can't be traced by the dorks over in the lab, just dip them in invisible ink!!!

Re: Hollow point ammunition
well i may not know how to make the hollow points but i know how to make them a hellava lot better. i own a single shot bolt action rifle for everything i have a SaVgE single shot(highlycustomized) in .22 long rifle and one in .300 win mag. with the .22 i found that when i go to wallmart i can buy sum remingtongoldenbullets 550 for only $8.79 heheh well these are about the best most uniform bullets u can get for ur weapon.next take a ball point pen, i use a BiC and place the round rim first on a hard surface so as for the bullet to stand up with tip up. stick the point of the pen gently into the hole to expand a litle. its enough to stick sum bird shot into the point about 3 bb's. when i shoot this high velocity ammuntion at 75 yards trough a paper target i can group 3/4s of an inch with five rounds and a 9 power scope when i shoot at apples at 100 yards the entrance hole of this round is about the size of a sharpie but the exits about 2-3 inches and the steel bb's penetrate deep and make big trauma to the wound of any small varmit u may come across in the desert(jackrabbits, sparrows, mice ect ect) thats a cheap effective way to maximize the accuracy and range of a hollow point .22 round from 36 grains to about 42 with only 3 small steel bb's

Re: Hollow point ammunition
A single shot savage in .300 WM? I don't recall seeing one of those. What model number is that?
I wouldn't really like to expand a bullet since they usually are a damn tight fit in the barrel as it is. If it works though, I guess it's not too tight. I wouldn't think a hollow point would be able to expand just by going through an apple, especially by that much. .22 to 2-3 inches seems like quite a bit of expansion, even an expansion to .40 would be impressive.

2-3" exit? What size friggin' apples do you folks grow out there? A three inch exit wound on an apple around here would leave you with applesauce. Cool idea with the birdshot though. cc

Re: Hollow point ammunition
A word of caution: DO NOT try to make hollowpoints out of FMJ-s. The half-jacket on a hollowpoint is closed in the base/rear end of the bullet. The jacket on a FMJ is closed in the tip/front end of the bullet but open at the base (so the lead can be poured/pressed in during manufacture). If you file off the tip on a FMJ, the jacket becomes opened on both ends, or basically a sort of sleeve, that can come off the bullet core due to the frictio between it and the barrel. If this happens and you don't notice it, the next shot will blow up the barrel.

Who or where did you get this crap information from?
I read it in the Hitman manual by paladin press. You're telling me that's bullshit? Fuck! Maybe I should jus stick to running the barrel through with a rat tail file?

Ummm, common knowledge, the news, books, magazines. Hollow points can definately be traced back to the gun. I don't care what you read in the hitman manual. The purpose of hollow points is to kill more reliably than fmj. It has nothing to do with forensics. If your book says that hollow points can't be traced, then we are telling you that it's bullshit. Have you ever seen a hollow point pulled out of someone? Or even one that was fired into balistic gelatin? They don't flatten completely. Even if they did, there would still be rifling marks on some piece of it that could be looked at.

TRACING HOLLOW POINTS. YES ALL AMMO CAN BE TRACED TO THE GUN THAT FIRED IT IF YOU HAVE THE GUN. BUT THE BULLET IS NOT THE ANSWER TO REDUCE THE CHANCES OF MATCHING BULLET TO GUN IS THE GUN AFTER THE SHOT USE CLEANING BRUSH OF SAME CALIBER WRAP WITH STEEL WOOL AND PUT VALVE POLISHING COMPOUND ON IT RUN IT THROUGH IN THEN OUT BEING 1 TRIP MAKE 100 TRIPS THIS IS CALLED LAPPING THE BARREL TAKES OUT THE SCRATCHES AND ROUGH SPOTS IN BARREL MAKING MARKINGS DIFFERENT AFTER THE SHOT IT ALSO HELPS ACCURACY THE FIRST 2 THINGS YOU CHECK IF GUN IS NOT ACCURATE IS #1 THE CROWN #2 IS TOOL MARKS IN BARREL FROM FACTORY TOOLS NOT SHARP LEAVES EDGES TO CATCH THE BULLET BEFORE FLIGHT TO PROVE THAT LAPPING THE BARREL WILL CHANGE THE RIFLING MARKS ON BULLET IT CHANGES THE BARREL TRUST ME
