Re: Identification points and how to modify them
What part(s) does the bullet travel through after firing? What part(s) does the casing touch when chambered or during firing? Well assuming there are no spent casings to match up to the firing pin and extractor. Then we're talking about matching the bullet to the barrel. Replacement barrels for most firearms can be purchased over the internet for around $100-150.00 Replacement firing pins, springs, extractors can also be ordered. Otherwise altering the surface of the pin, firing pin spring and extractor could surfice. And assuming you went through the trouble of modifing or replacing all of the above, there still is one little thing most people overlook... Opps I forgot what that is lol If you have a predisposition to use a firearm to commit a crime please don't... Breaking News quote: A man identified as I Love Poop shoots armed robber commonly known as "warweed12" on the popular message board known as The Temple of The Screaming Electron while exiting the bank of shitzville..." , "more news at 10."

Re: Identification points and how to modify them
Ok, lets see. What would I do if I was going to bust a cap?
The easy answer is to drop the gun somewhere deep and salty.
Not possible you say? Nebraska? Switching to plan B.
Now, if you either can't afford to lose the only piece of evidence that can put you in prison for decades, or if it now carries some kind of sentimental value, what to do?
Some automatics have replaceable barrels (Model 1911), some don't (Lorcin .380). If you can't replace the barrel, at least run a rat-tail file up there numerous times or sandpaper on a stick, at least something.
Replace the firing pin, or booger up the tip of the one in the gun. And here is the clincher, lose the rest of the ammo you used, all of it. Don't know how many times I heard some dipshit got caught with a box of ammo in his closet with exactly the right amount of shells missing, and ballistic/metallurgical tests later prove they are identical down to about a million to one. Twits.
Also might want to make sure when you load the gun you are wearing gloves, they do get fingerprints off shell casings.
I do believe that is everything, but if someone has a plan C, I'd love to hear it.

Re: Identification points and how to modify them
Go to the range and get a pocketful of empties of the same caliber, carry them with you and dump them all over the crime scene. That should be enough to create a nightmare for the prosecutor. With a good enough lawyer, you should be able to have the evidence from your gun thrown out.
I'd definately say to use something with an easily replaceable barrel(firing pin and extractor would be a good idea too) and destroy the barrel that was used to commit the crime. It's better for them to test your gun and come up empty handed than for them to not find a gun at all.
I'd completely change the parts instead of just filing them. They can most likely tell if the parts have been recently tampered with and that will probably get brought up in the trial, if there is one. Plus you never know if you filed enough or not.
Using a brass catcher would also probably be a good idea. It would give them one less peiece of evidence to use against you.
Another idea would be to buy a gun from a private party at a gun show. Don't ever show or tell anyone about the gun. Hide it in a lock box buried somewhere until it's needed, then put it back. I know that's going a little bit far, but some people are pretty damn methodical.
Don't forget to wash your hands, arms and possibly face with something very strong, so there's no chance of finding powder residue on you. Burn the clothes you wore for the same reason.

see i like that idea, it takes a little forthought, but its good. the problem would be reburing it, its just gona stick out on any good investigation. hired_gun, seems like somthing you might want to do, if you ever even get a gun.

Let us also not forget the breech-face.
