Kevlar The BUllet Proof Armour Material
For my second period science class. We are studying Polymers, and starting a topic on making posters to show how differnt polymers work and the applications of them to everyday life. I am choosing to do Kevlar the bullet proof vest material and i was just wondering if anyone had anygood ideas for sites of where to look because with yahoo and google and other serch engines are annoying for seraching for information about it. I know kevlar is used as a thread item and is some what like chain mail like used in medevil times. So if you have any information on it or where to look it up i would appreciate it. thanks
Moshy

Re: Kevlar The BUllet Proof Armour Material
Before we moved my mother used to work at the DuPont in virginia that made that stuff....She was the manager for kevalar...All I know is that the stuff is binded with sulfuric acid...Because I remeber when I was like 10 I took a trip to the plant...They didn't let us see to much of the equipment and everything but they let us see the packing floors and warehouses and I caught a glimpses at the machine that ran the sulfuric acid on the fibers and that shit must of had over 500 litres of sulfuric acid....I could've made some awesome amounts of acetone peroxide with that stuff...

Re: Kevlar The BUllet Proof Armour Material
isn't kelvar the stuff that is used to attatch the nose cone of a model rocket to a body tube?
Anyways, how are you going to make this?
If you do find it, tell me where you got it. I think the stuff seems pretty cool.

Re: Kevlar The BUllet Proof Armour Material
Dupont, maker of Kevlar http://www1.dupont.com/NASApp/dupontglobal/corp/index.jsp?page=/content/ US/en_US/solutions/kevlar.html
all the search took was "what is kevlar", with quotes.
generly you can make anything out of kevlar, with expetion of clear windows (?) and heads of hammers (great handles though)
edit: spelling

Dont you ever learn Boris? jk man Kevlar is a very strong polmer that has many uses such as bulet proof vests and safty suits for ss motercycle riders. One thread can hold a 200 pound man. CTR

Re: Kevlar The BUllet Proof Armour Material
actually the max strength of one(1) thread in 70-80 lbs thus 2 small strands would be 140-160 lbs and these strands are a little bigger then sewing thread...

Re: Kevlar The BUllet Proof Armour Material
I'm sure the thread size can vary depending on application. So there's not any real set strength.

Re: Kevlar The BUllet Proof Armour Material
kevlar is mildly bullet proof, the kevlar in a bullet proof vest will stop small arms fire, that is to say handgun amunition, shot. the part that blocks assult rifle amunition is steel plate or ceramic. A good hunting rifle with full metal jaketed ammo is most likely going to punch throught the steel.

Re: Kevlar The BUllet Proof Armour Material
kevlar is sort of reinforced nylon, it is 50 times harder than mild steel... the plates in the body armor should be made of stainless steel... and of course some composite ceramics...
kevlar vest may block handgun ammunition, but the damage is still there... it is just as if you got a heavy punch...
rifles ammunition are far too powerful to be blocked by kevlar alone...
kevlar are woven into clothes, then layered to make a bullet prove vest...
but some pistols with armor-piercing ammo can pierce a kevlar vest... like the 5.56 ammo in 10mm casing.. and the 5.7 x 28 ball round...
