An odd question
What do you guys think is better? To have a general, multipurpose weapon that works well for a variety of purposes (hunting, self defense, staving off alien invasions or bands of marauding politicians), or a collection of specialized weapons that are superb in a certain setting but don't shine very brightly outside of it (a rifle or rifles for hunting, a revolver or automatic for self-defense, a shotgun for belligerant trespassers and the like)?
Myself, I don't think that there's any one Super-Firearm outside of James Bond movies, but having enough weaponry to take up three rooms in your house is taking the term specialization to its illogical extreme... not to mention the Boy Scout Motto "Be Prepared".
Thoughts?

Re: An odd question
With a semi auto handgun, a scoped bolt action, and a shotgun you can cover pretty much all areas. You can get by with just one though. A handgun can be used for self defense, hunting, and politician/alien removal as can a shotgun or rifle. So in reality, you only "need" one gun, but it's always nice to have as many as you can afford.

That's more or less what I was thinking.
If you break into my house and I peg you with my hunting rifle instead of my .357 you're still gonna get a hurtin'. High speed lead acts as high speed lead of any other, to a large degree.

give me a p90 any day of the week. extreemly small, high velocity, fairly accurate, generous magazine size, more penetration than you will ever need, and full or semi auto. a p90 and sidearm of your choice pretty much covers all your bases.

Re: An odd question
i think that a 12 gauge shotgun would be best to have cuz you can use it for hunting, home defense or use slugs for aliens.

Not to mention that the slide action of a pump-action 12 guage being chambered is the most recognizable sound in the world. 9 out of 10 people upon hearing that immediately become flushed with the flight side of the fight or flight response. The other 1 out of 10 are the ones you don't wanna jack with unless you are putting a slug in their noggin.

Re: An odd question
Personally, a decent semiautomatic pistol, either in the 9MM or .40S&W (that holds over 10 rounds) and a AR15 with a bunch of 30 round mags and i'm set.
If the night of the living dead scenario would happen i'd be grabbing my SIG P228 and AR15 along with a handful of magazines.
SS109 5.56nato steel penatrators would knock those zmobies down in a hurry.
If it came down to space aliens, i'd probabaly cruise by the gunstore in a hurry and pick up a scoped Springfield SAR-8 .308(simular to the HKG3A3) and a bunch-o twenty round mags.

I suspected that would be the best way. Specialized... but not TOO specialized.

Re: An odd question
The thing i would want is what i saw in a gun show a little while back it was an HKG3 with five 30 round mags and one 100 round Beat C drum mag. it cost alot but you could fight off the whole lot of them with that piece.

Re: An odd question
If you had to have one weapon to do everything I would chose a ruger redhawk in .44mag or .454casule. -you can hunt large game -you can get them with a short enough barrel to cary -with a set of reduced power wolf springs it wouldn't be a bad self defence piece -you don't need to double tap with a .44mag
however there are beter weapons out there to do each specific thing better i think the redhawk is one of the few that dose it all.
I would chose the Ruger redhawk over the smith and wesson not only because I hate smith for signing the aggreement with the government, but also because the s&w will not handle the same heavy loads that the ruger will.

Which springs are it that you think need changed? I've shot a freedom arms revolver in .454 Cassul and that thing was a beast. It makes the .44 mag feel like a .22. It will put a dent in your forehead if you're not ready for it. I'd love to buy one, but don't have the money for it right now.

Re: An odd question
If one replaces the main spring on a redhawk with a lighter one, it realy cleans up the trigger. The trigger pull is much smoother afterwards.
Yea, .454 realy kicks, but you can shoot .45 colt out of it, and those are prety smooth.

Re: An odd question
I haven't shot a redhawk. How does it compare to a raging bull from taurus? I've shot one of those and they are decent, but not worth the price.
The freedom arms .454 that I shot was awesome. It was probably the smoothest revolver that I've shot.

Re: An odd question
The geometry of ruger frames are more condusive to the energy being directed straight back instead of snapping up like the taurus. Anything will buck in a .454 but the rugers just don't seem as bad.
Freedom arms are built on ruger frames. They are wonderful guns. But that is why ruger will not come out with a .454 blackhawk, they have an agreement with freedom arms.

P-90's kick ass. Did you see the sidearm that goes with it...its called a Five-seveN (yes that is how it is spelled).

Re: An odd question
My personal favorites are the Walther P99 chrome slide .40 S&W, the FN Five SeveN 5.7mm rounds, H&K MP5K, and the H&K G41. Those are my personal favorites. Of course, with th Five SeveN, you can do anything with it. Hunt, kill people, anything.

Re: An odd question
What is up with everyone's obsession with the FN P90? People here seem to think that it is some kind of super-weapon of doom. In reality, it is nothing more than a submachine gun that fires wussy little .22-caliber bullets not even nearly as fast as the .223.
Don't get me started on the Desert Eagle.
rlpinca and Zero have the right idea.

Re: An odd question
Now I'm definitely not obsessed with the P90 but it does perform certain mission specific functions very well. While its true that you won't make any 800 meter kills with it, at CQB range, it goes through body armour like a hot knife through butter. Not much stopping power, but double and triple taps will do the trick. Overpenetration is not much of an issue when it comes to the 5.7 bullet. With the 50 round magazine, that translates to between 15 and 25 targets before reloading (or going to a sidearm).
Problems include: (rumor) If dropped on its butt, the magazine jams up and becomes worthless. The lack of choice in optics. The factory relfex sight is adequate but some may have other preferances.
Desert Eagle is worthless in combat. Put more than 50 rounds through it and it'll refuse to cycle. Time to go home and dunk it in the tank. And then detail strip it. .50AE puts out a lot of gunk.
Zero and rlpinca are definitely on the right track. The best gun is the one that YOU shoot best, not the one with the biggest bullet or the fastest full auto rate of fire (usually inflated anyway). If a .22mag purse pistol is whats best for you, then use it.
Remember, people: Shot placement is crucial!

Nice gun! Have you tried out the trigger on the P99 QA (quick action)? It's soooo sweet. I might eventually have to break down and get one of these for christmas. quote: Desert Eagle is worthless in combat.
At what... seven or eight pounds i'm sure if you chucked it at someone you could seriously injure them? quote: Remember, people: Shot placement is crucial!
Exactly my thoughts, you could bring up the whole caliber vs shot placement debate... such as the old favorite... 9MM vs .45ACPWith decent defense hollowpoint ammunition a 9MM will reliablely expand to .60ish+ and penatrate 10-15+ inches. With some of the 124grain +P loads you see velocities of 1200fps+ and engry output of 400ft/lb+. Comparing that to the 230grain .45, 800fps+ and about 400ft/lb+. Then again some say, you're 9MM may expand but my .45 will never shrink
