Re: european vs eastern swords
i go with european just because im more skilled with them. a kitana is a far better weapon than a rapier but i have experience with european swords so they kinda win by default in my mind.

Re: european vs eastern swords
Eastern, no doubt. High quality swords, high quality training. Not that I have either, but I love the feel of a katana in my hands.

Re: european vs eastern swords
A Katana doesn't neccesarily beat a Rapier, especially if you can lunge quickly.
And a Gladius w/ buckler would sure as hell beat one.

Re: european vs eastern swords
Honestly, I am just as comfortable with either, though I would prefer to tailor the blade to the particular situation. In general though, taking the best of each "world's" swords, they are each perfect for their spawning environment and purpose. If I had to fight a man in european plate mail, I'd prefer to have a nice broadsword or even a claymore, for example. Katana vs. chain mail or plate mail is fairly ineffective comparatively...then again, there are other Non-sword weapons that work so much better on each type of armor.

Re: european vs eastern swords
It is said that the katanas of the ancient samurai could easily cut through metal if the warrior were a true blade master. I'd take a katana if there were a true master still left to teach me, but unfortuantly I'm afraid it's a lost art, or at least, a secretive one.
