Man I was looking at it, and I thought of F16 ammonution. Im no expert at this and really dont know anythinmg, but this will probably rip your leg off with one shot or make your head blow.

It is intresting, only saw those in a movie once, now all I need to know is, I know thats a stupid one and Im sure its impossible, but can you add a silencer to that? Even if you could it wont change much anyways I believe.

Yes even the fact that, why would you need a silencer for that weapon it doesnt make any sense because of its use, but anyways, can it have a silencer?

It would be a good sniper rifle if the sniper had really good cover. It's more for a defensive sniper mission, such as guarding a road. In an offensive role it would be kind of a bitch. It would be too heavy to get out of there in a hurry or to sneak around with. Plus it's not very hard to figure out which direction a .50 BMG round came from. Against vehicles it can't really be beat though.

hey mack, well technically the muzzlebreak on the end of the barrel is considered a silencer(not a very good one tho)but srry to say its impossible to put a real silencer on a .50 cal BMG rifle.

rlplinca, believe it or not the 50 cal rifle is also used by scout snipers,it can be modified to a lighter format ensuring higher mobility, with a slight decrease in power.but as u said the 50 cal is primarily an anti-vehicle weapon.it saw its most action in operation desert storm

Why would you silence a .50 cal rifle? That'd be like a silenced SAM installation. They're gonna figure out where it came from. Besides, after the first shot, you're not gonna want to shoot it again anytime soon.

It's still a big bastard to carry, and it's a waste of material and development to try and devise a silencer for it. Someone can spot the signature when it is fired, and a cloud of dust rising up from the ground followed by someone's chest cavity violently busting apart, it would not take rocket science to put two and two together and know what happened. And then the sniper team would be fucked, because mortars, RPGs, and heavy MG fire would be raining in on them. While I have seen it used in the offensive role in both Desert Storm and Afghanistan, it's better on a rooftop or guarding a road.
He is right though about it's effect on vehicles, A shot through the ass-end of a BMP-1 (whose rear troop doors also double as the vehicles' main fuel tank. Way to go USSR!) would destroy it as throughly as a porn-stars' plowed out scrunt. Artillery pieces get shot to shit, and one recon team brought back pictures of a round hitting a Katyusha Rocket pile. great fireball.

I know. It's still a pain in the ass to get around though as compared to the regular rifle they use. The snipers main advantage is the ability to move around undetected and they can't do that as well with a .50 cal.

I know the Barret uses a muzzle break. But on M2s(which don't use a muzzle break) you can watch the dirt in front of the barrel ripple outward in an arc because of all the power. It also gives you a one of a kind thump in the chest. You got to love a round that you can feel 10 feet behind the gun.

Actually rplinca, .50 BMG rifles are being used a lot in Afghanistan right now. Two many teams, one man with a .50 cal, one with something smaller, the man with the .50 cal can cover troops from far away, while his partner can spot for him and cover him, if necessary.

And, its not the most powerful sniper rifle in the world, there are a few rifles which use much larger rounds. They're not at all practical, since they're big, and weigh a lot, but still could be used.

I wasn't arguing that it wasn't being used. But you can bet your ass it isn't being used on a long range mission to take out 1 guy with the snipers crawling on their bellies through an open field for 12 hours. Like Joe and I said though it's better from a stationary position instead of the more traditional sniper role.

I think a .50 BMG can barely be calssified as a sniper rifle(although it does work) anything more powerful can't really be considered a sniper rifle.

Well, althoug many .50 cal bmg rifles are classified as sniper rifles., the one in question here, the barret actually isn't. Kinda fun to shoot at people with an anti-equipment gun

Barrett is the manufacturer of 50's for the US Military snipers, they have a bolt gun and a semi auto as choices to use.

The muzzle break is not a silencer, muzzle breaks make a gun much louder, any gun, whether it be a .22 rifle, shotgun, or even the 50. It however is used mainly for knocking out materials and equipment, but is not the biggest of it's kind. There is a 20mm rifle that has the same mission.

Sniper have used the .50 for taking out the enemy however and to great effect. The bullet will always pass through a two legged target, but the energy absorbed is still phenomenal and one shot stops are nearly 100%. The military uses ball ammo, so there is no removing of legs or heads with one shot. There will be a nice permanent hole however about 0.6" diamter (a little larger), than the bullet itself.

In competition with .50's sollid brass or copper rounds are used. I have also seen Speer Point Boat Tails in matches. Basically Speer increased their dimensions of their famous .30 hunting round to .50. These bullets can double their diameter on impact and in the .30's they almost always stop in the target, meaning that all the energy is absorbed by the target.

So with this bullet on the .50 we can expect to see 1" wound cavities, much larger shock cavities, and if the bullet stops the target absorbed around 13,000ftlbs of energy, compared to 4000ftlbs from good high powered hunting rifles. Maybe with this bullet combination a person would see limbs removed, and instant decapatations. But with ball ammo? No, just clean holes.

With a muzzle break on the .50 people should be be 30ft from you, the muzzle blast is that bad and kicks up a hell of a lot of dirt. I have fired 2 .50's in my life, one a Barrett and one a custom designed target rifle. The sound is unreal, the recoil, it's manageable if you hold the gun correctly, but after 5 shots or so, you are very fatigued by the recoil and it starts getting very sore.

The 50cal is a round that will probably never die as it hasn't changed much, Since John Browning invented it. But all that is about to be turned upside down. There is a project in development to increase it's effective range to over 4000m! How so? Laser guidance. A bullet is being developed that has the capability to be guided, it has a single canard and can change it's center of gravity to maneuver. A person paints the target with a laser the sniper shoots at the target with a site or fires using GPS technology and with direction from the laser designator. This puts the bullet on a pretty much straight course with the target. The laser guidance takes care of wind. The problem is that the bullet cannot change it's altitude that well so a very correcty angle of fire is needed. However I'm sure in time, that will be improved as well. When that comes, 50cal gunners too, will be able to shoot and destroy unseen targets, the ultimate in sniping.

Then again this changes things, gunners will not be as dangerous as laser designators, and the conventiol role of the enemy sniper which used to be to take out other snipers (their main goal) will in the future to be to take out anyone that packs a laser. And the ever changing battlefield continues.

I shudder to think how a barret sounds up close, only ones i've ever heard...it was so cool. They were shooting at thick iron disks. When the guy fired, you'd here a "thunk" kinda sound, followed by a loud crack, then a big BOOM. Lots of fun.

The only .50 BMG that I've fired was the M2. That was my favorite gun to have ever fired. Although I was in a comm battalion, I was also on their crew served gun team. We got to go out with all of the full autos that the batallion had every quarter and spend 2 days shooting them. The batallion had a huge budget so everyone usually got plenty of trigger time. HEDP from the MK19 is pretty impressive too.

My favorite weapon I've fired for the Marines is the SMAW. The Smaw is so fucking loud your ears hurt even with protection, and the concussion can lift you off the ground sometimes. A real fun weapon to shoot, if you don't mind the headache after firing one or two rockets.

What about .50 cal anti-tank pistols? I think I heard something along those lines once, but I shudder to think what havoc that would play with one's wrist...

Never heard anything about that. Even an M2 isn't considered anti tank unless very precisly aimed, even then it's limited. A .50 BMG out of a pistol would have to have a muzzle break that was a wonder of modern engineering or it would rip your arm off and beat you with it. A .454 cassul will easily put a dent in your forehead if you're not 100% ready for it, I'd hate to see what a .50 bmg would do to you.

Ah. Found it. The Maadi-Griffin .50 BMG Pistol. Plans for the pistol and some rifles available at www.maadigriffin.com . They claim that the recoil is "less than that of a 12 gauge shotgun." Ear protection is recommended.

Apparently, at least one of these has been manufactured. More info and a picture at http://www.prairienet.org/guns/big/mg.htm
