Flame-throwers
I am new to these forums. I am not quite sure if this has been posted before but can someone please tell me how to make a flamethrower so that the flame will not go into the fuel supply and blow up.
I made a flamethrower once before but it wasnt very good. I got a long stick, an aerosol and some strong tape. I taped the aerosol to the stick then I put tape over the aerosol can - so the 'gas' is constantly spraying. I then lit the aerosol and held the stick, after about 30 seconds....BANG

Re: Flame-throwers
a flame thrower uses 100 octane gasoline and deisel mixed under preasure lit by a pilot light at the end. If you ever do make one remember to lean forward when shooting it, because if it pushes ou on to your back you join the barbeque.

Re: Flame-throwers
Why do you need a flame thrower?
Molotov Cockatails are cheaper, more simplified and definently more "user friendly".
Naplam is also a safer and more effective method, producing more heat and burning longer.

Re: Flame-throwers
Zero, I have blown several aerosol/deodrant cans up. You throw em on a fire and as the heat pressurises the gas it goes boom, a neat fireball comes right out of it and a very loud bang accompanys it.
On to flame throwers, the aersol ones are preety lame and suck in my opinion. Filling a super soaker (type of water pistol) with petrol and stickin a match on the end is more fun. Light the match pull the trigger and spew it all over a fence or something. Very dangerous if you aren't carefull but great fun none the less.

Re: Flame-throwers
Right. If you throw it in a fire you have a sporting chance, but using it as a flamethrower? I've yet to see it happen.

Won't the flame go back in the super soaker and ignite the rest of the petrol causing it to blow up? Or with it being plastic will it just melt?

Re: Flame-throwers
Yes, It would most likely melt the nozzle and prevent any more petrol coming out. But there is that small chance of the flame going into the petrol, which probably would cause injury. Don't try it, it is a very bad idea. I don't think an aersol cam could blow up just from a flame thrower, and if it blow up in your hand you'd have no hand left. I mess with aerosols alot and sorry but after 30 seconds on a fire they don't blow up, it takes a good 40 seconds. Most aersols need temperatures of above 50 degrees, and a simple flamethrower would not reach that in 30 seconds, i poured petrol on one just for the sake of it and it took a good 40 or 50 seconds to go boom.

Shrapnel, yes I've heard of it but may I add I've also heard of standing well back. Besides aersol cans don't shoot that much shrapnel but I suppose it could happen.

Re: Flame-throwers
In response to the original question of how to make a flame-thrower that won't take your face off: Get one of those oil cans that has a trigger (they will throw a stream of oil at least 20 feet or more), a piece of cotton felt 4 inches long by 1&1/4 inches wide, and a small screw-type hose clamp. Wrap the felt around the nozzle (making sure there is still room for the stream of oil to shoot), clamp it down with the hose clamp, mix yourself some gas and oil in a 50/50 ratio, and fill up the container. "Slightly" squeeze the trigger until the 50/50 mix soaks the felt, then light the felt and fire away. Accuracy is not bad with a little practice, and you don't have to worry about it blowing up on you, unless you buy one of those oil cans from China that leak like a sieve. You will have to re-soak the felt from time to time, but a handy little thrower it is.

Combustion may occur or whatever. My. That's an beathtaking deomonstration of your grasp of physics right there. Yes, if you toss a whole can in a fire or heat the thing up enough it leak. Heat it up quite drastically and it will burst, possibly forcefully, and the contents may ignite on the way out. However, with no oxygen in the can there is no way for the stuff to ignite while it's still inside. Furthermore, the stream of burning whatever coming from the nozzle isn't nearly enough to heat the can to the point of bursting. The infamous warning of the can exploding in the foolhardy boy's hand as he uses it for a flamethrower is, in reality, merely an old wives' tale to keep people from lighting other things on fire with cans. ~Zero the Inestimable

Re: Flame-throwers
ive seen people use aresol cans as flamethrowers but ive never seen one blow up. it possibly could happen. but i would figure that the spring loaded valve would close and prevent that because of all the pressure that coming out of the can i wouldnt figure the flame could get inside. but i have no idea. i do know that throwing a full can of OFF into a fire makes a big boom.

Re: Flame-throwers
I once wasted neally a whole can useing it like a flame thrower. I dont think its possiable for it to lick back inside. Half the time the flame is and inch away from the can anyway. How big do u want ur flame thrower anyway

Does someone have a link to 'safe' napalm?
Im a 'safe' pyro, i dont want anyone to get hurt, but i want to experiment. This could be a good thread for all things pyro.

Re: Flame-throwers
Sounds like something out of the beloved cookbook. If you light the fuse and throw the can you'll have a lit fuse and a can that is 15 feet away from you. Big deal. Unless the can lands directly on the nozzle without putting the fuse out, nothing will happen.

Re: Flame-throwers
It won't explode if you do that, but if you leave it upright it will melt the valve and spew forth flames for about ten minutes.
I find that a small pile of smoke mixture around the lip of the can works better than a single fuse.
