Default Boron/ Beryllium

Does anyone know why the first ionozation energy (th energy required to remove the outermost and most loosely held electron) is lower for Boron despite its placement on the periodic table and the periodic trends for ionozation energy???

this question has been nagging at me for the past week, and the research online has not gotten me anywhere.

though i really dont understand the question i'll take a stab- boron contains 5 electrons and beryllium 4 electrons.
boron- <> <> < beryllium <> <>
1s 2s 2p 1s 2s

1s2 2s2 2p1 1s2 2s2

the reason why the amount of energy is lower might be because the outtermost electron of boron is alone in its sublevel, but beryllium has 2 electrons in its outtermost sublevel though this would mean the electron configuration notation would not apply- boron being .B: and beryllium being Be: , ya dig?

anyone else find it sad that a 17 year old high school student could answer that, and no one else could?

I'll take a stab at it. (kiddies, don't use this for doctorate research). Each time a new electron shell is created (2,4,4,8,8, ect.), the 1st element with 1 electron in the new shell is very chemically reactive....ref., periodic table

the more massive the element, the looser the outer electrons are held, thus making it more reactive

sleepwalker.

dude... i am a 17 year old chem student as well. the last exam i took was one on that chapter. i figured it out meself.

realize that the second you begin to hold yourself above others is the second you will be thrown to the ground by those who support you.

no, you have to use a table that has to do with the electrons, not the atomic number, so charge plays into it as well.

what makes up most of the mass of an atom.

the nucleous.

where does the positive charge come from that holds all of the electrons in place?

the nucleous.

as the mass of an atom gets bigger (as one goes from left to right) another proton is added and thus adding to the charge.

please dont discount someone elses words just because you put too much faith in your own.

when you stop getting people on this site to do your homework(and stop getting your answers from shit like ask jeeves)- then your opinion matters to me

that wasn't homework. it was purely my own interest.
lol

believe me sleep. i am an ethical student. what do you take me for? u think im doin this to get answers to graded papers and such? no. i only ask things so i can have help when i study. nothing more.

ask jeeves isn't that bad of a scource. i also use web ferret. they serve my purpose, so why should i not use them?
