AMYL NITRITE C5H11.NO2
Dissolve 13 grams of potassium nitrite in 7.5 cubic centimeters of water; then in another beaker mix 15 grams (18 c.c.-I think) of amyl alcohol with 30 grams concentrated sulphuric acid. Cool the alcohol/acid beaker, and add SLOWLY! to the nitrite/water solution stirring well. You will need to do this reaction outdoors or in a fume hood. Now put the mixture in a distillation flask and collect fraction at 95 C. to 99 C. C5H11.OH+HNO2=C5H11.NO2+H2O NOTE: Commercial Amyl alcohol always contains d-amyl, and some other derivatives. The waste Fusel Oil collected in the impure "first runnings" of ethyl alcohol distillation contain about 1/5 of 2-methyl-1-propanol (isobutyl), and traces of 1-propanol (n-propyl), 3-methyl-1-butanol (isoamyl), and 2-methyl-1-butanol (active amyl).
