Default Guns don't kill people....

I would appreciate only Americans replying to this since our constitution allows guns, and because we talk about his every day, and because we love to shoot each other more than most other countries. Our founders created this do Americans could "keep the king of England out of your face." I will give extra credit to your nerds who can name the source of this quote. Anyway, my point is that guns DO kill people. I never hear of a "drive-by" concerning knives. I never hear of a sniper throwing a knife from 600+ yards away killing over 10 people in the D.C. area. Also, I rarely hear of a knife "accidentally going off" and killing a curious child. I never hear of a hunter accidentally killing a human by throwing a knife into a thick patch of shrubs. My point is that guns are too easy. Guns kill people, much more than knives. If we didn't have as many guns, people would be forced to try and stab you. I survived an ordeal like this. If my attacker had a gun, I would have died. Instead, I wrestled the knife away after being stabbed, and survived. Guns won us our freedom, but now are guns want to kill us all.

First off, the quote is from the Simpsons. And I'm NOT a nerd - I'm a dork-ass. Get it RIGHT.

Secondly, you have an amazing ability to impute malicious motives to inanimate objects. Guns don't kill people. Guns don't wake up in the morning and think, I'm gonna kill Bob. This is because it's a chunk of metal. If YOU decide to go out and kill someone with a gun, that's another story. But don't blame the gun.

And let's remember that, the majority of the time, guns are used for DEFENSIVE purposes. So if guns were thinking anything, it'd be more along the lines of "Please don't rob my owner, or you WILL be up Shit Creek, and you WILL be lacking a paddle."

Yeh but what he means is that killing accidently when defending yourself can happen with a gun, not with a knife.

There is no such thing as a accidental shooting. If you don't pull the trigger, the gun will not discharge.

quote:
Guns kill people, much more than knives.

Actually the numbers are really damn close.

And the number of DUI related injuries and fatalities cast a giant shadow on firearm related injuries and fatalities.

I don't understand what point the orginal thread poster guy is trying to convey here.

What would you like to see happen to firearms?

Personally, I don't want to see anything happen to them.

I want to see any individual who commits a crime with a firearm get the punishment they deserve. We have plenty of firearm related laws on the books both at the federal and state level. What we don't have is mandatory sentancing guidlines that are upheld.

In florida

During the commission of a crime:

Pull a Gun-Mandatory 10 Years
Pull the Trigger-Mandatory 20 Years
Shoot Someone-25 Years to Life (whether they live or die)

Mandate a minimum term of 3 years for possession of a firearm by a felon

Violent gun crimes in Florida continue to decline since 10-20-Life became law and was the focus of a $1.3 million public awareness campaign. In 1998, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement reported over 31,600 violent gun crimes. That year, Governor Bush advocated 10-20-Life as a centerpiece of his campaign platform. In 1999, the Florida Legislature enacted this law and funded the campaign to advertise the laws tough mandatory sentences of 10 years up to life in prison. The 2000 Florida Legislature extended the mandatory prison sentences required by 10-20-Life to 16 and 17-year olds who discharge a gun and those offenders who have prior records. The results are in: The violent-gun crime rate in 2000 declined by 26.4 percent as compared to 1998.

"Guns don't kill people. The Government does." --Dale Gribble from King of the Hill

quote:
Instead, I wrestled the knife away after being stabbed, and survived.

If you had a gun you could have just shot him before he stabbed you.

I think that guns are easier to use for killing is why they are good. Let's say, hypothetically, all civilian owned guns disappeared; Even criminals couldn't get guns. Knives become the weapon of choice for those who want weapons. How will that change violent crime? What would happen would be that those who were bigger, stronger, quicker, more physically adept would enjoy a huge advantage over everyone else. The weak, clumsy, and non-physically fit would be at the mercy of the strong. On the other hand, just about anyone can fire a gun. It doesn't matter if you're 4'6" and 200 pounds or 6'2" 200 pounds, the bullet coming out of the barrel is going to have the same effect. Remember the old quote, "God made man; Sam Colt made them equal."

if guns were outlawed you would see some insanely gruesome murders with knives. have you even seen a fight between two adept knife fighters? it can get pretty damn ugly and be over just about as fast as a gun fight. in fact i dont carry a gun because a knife is enough for me (well that and im not 21 ). knives are not the answer to guns and if you believe so just talk to someone who can actaully knife fight.

Considering that the war on drugs is a dismal failure, it is folly to think that banning civilians from owning guns will stop criminals from possessing them. This is also similar to the irony of laws: Good people do not need laws, as they inherently follow them, bad people are not contained by laws, as they inherently ignore them. The quote is bastardized, but the message is cure. When you criminalize guns only criminals will have guns.

It was moe sizlack. furthermore the civilian ban on guns has increased crime where it has been instituted. the rates of burglary and armed robery skyrocketed in brittan and australia following their fire arms prohibitions. This is on large account due to the fact that a criminal is defined as one that does not follow the laws of the contry in which they reside, and as gun prohibition is a legal matter It stands to reason that a criminal Is not likely to relinquish their fire arm after they are prohibited by legal mandate from owning it.
