no more .50bmg's?
Has anyone heard of the fight against .50bmg caliber rifles? I saw part of it on cnn or something. The anti-gun activists want any 50cal rifle to be listed as class 3 firearms. This is the same classification given to fully automatic weapons. They say that since the .50bmg is such a large round, it is somehow more dangerous and has great potential for assasinations and things like that. I've never heard of any crime where a .50bmg was used in a 'terrorist' or criminal act. While not illegal yet, it's another example of the second ammendment being whittled away. Has anybody else heard of this? I'm not as well informed as i'd like to be on this particular issue. What do you guys think?

I was reading the account of the BATF agents during the botched Branch Davidian raid, and several agents said they were fired on by one. Question is is this true?

Re: no more .50bmg's?
if they were then they deseved it. the feds did set fire to the complex to provoke them. the dividians were just defending themselves and using the second for what it was intended to be used for, that protecting oneself from a a tyranical government seeking to destroy their way of life.
and i also saw that special that was on about a week ago. the sniveling little asshole of a politician has never even fired a gun yet he is trusted with making laws regulating them. someone really needs to put that hipocrite in his place.

Re: no more .50bmg's?
very good point about the tyrannical government. It's possible that a .50bmg was used in that exchange, but it's the first i've heard of it. The only .50bmg rifle i know of is the barret which weighs in at 27lbs. if i'm not mistaken. This alone makes it impractical for the majority of armed crimes. I'd like to understand why this particular round is being attacked by politicians. There is no logic behing it.

Since when do any recent anti-gun political ideals have any logic?

Ex-fucking-actly. We need more militias. It is guaranteed to us in the constitution. My friends and I are currently forming one. I love this country, and I would never let corrupt politicans pull a fast one on us.

Alot of companies have put out a .50BMG rifle. You can get a single shot bolt action for about $1500.00 Not bad until you take ammo cost into consideration.

Re: no more .50bmg's?
I agree that a .50 BMG can do serious damage in the wrong hands. So can a .300 Win Mag, it can kill someone from 1000 yards fairly reliably as can several other rounds. They need to worry about enforcing the laws that already exist more than they need to worry about making more laws.

This year will go down in history as the first time a civilized nation has complete gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police will be able to do thier jobs more efficiently and the world will follow our lead into the future! Adolph Hitler 1935

Re: no more .50bmg's?
I have heard of this attack on .50 cal rifles, but as of yet there hasnt been an incident involving one for the left wing media to run with. As soon as there is an incident these bottom feeding reporters and politicians will run with it, gauranteed. anyone planning to do something with one of these rifles will obtain one with or without a ban on them, so once again the law abiding citizen is the victim!

Good quote, but it has been proven false by several gun magazines.

Really? Why would the magazines want to disprove that?

Re: no more .50bmg's?
From what I read, it had been under suspicion for quite awhile because of the dates and paper that were originally involved. The gun mags probably wanted to disprove it before the anit gun fucks got to it and made a big scene out of it and discredited most of the other pro gun quotes.
I think one of the Shotgun News issues from this summer was where I first saw the article.

Re: no more .50bmg's?
in the liberal Atlanta Journal Constitution(our great newspaper) they said it would be possible to shoot down a helicopter with a .50BMG. now i've played GTA3 and everyone knows you can only shoot down helicopters with m-16s and rocket launchers.

Alright thanks for filling me in. quote: in the liberal Atlanta Journal Constitution(our great newspaper) they said it would be possible to shoot down a helicopter with a .50BMG. now i've played GTA3 and everyone knows you can only shoot down helicopters with m-16s and rocket launchers.
heh. What they probably meant is that you can shoot the pilot and then it would drop. In that case though, you could do it with a well placed .22 round.

Re: no more .50bmg's?
As my father says: A .50 BMG is just the thing you want when you are robbing a liquor store. It's only 30 pounds, very cheap at seven thousand dollars and about two dollars a round, and has such a light kick.
In case you can't figure it out, he was being sarcastic.

Re: no more .50bmg's?
a 50BMG is still readily available, it doesn't require any special permits.
I have a buddy that shoots competitive targets.. It is a big club thing.. Kicks like a 12 guage shotgun..
He has a Barrett.. go to the magazine stand and pickup a shotgun news..
then go call a gun dealer and have him order one.. I've seen a generic (not Barrett) for about 1300.. Barretts are about 3500

Re: no more .50bmg's?
Still to take advantage of the range of a .50BMG you need lots of practice. Most criminals wouldn't bother with all that effort. They'll go with a much cheaper gun. One without a $5 price tag per round. And lets not forget about concealability. At over 3 feet long these aren't exactly pocket pistols here.

Re: no more .50bmg's?
I hate those goddamn liberal anti-gunners. If they ban the 50 caliber, then they'd try to ban the 49 caliber, and if they succeed at that, they'd try to ban the 48 caliber, and so on. It won't stop until those bastards have totally disarmed all law-abiding American citizens.
Only through constant vigilance and the will to stand up to potential tyrants will we ever hope to keep any semblance of freedom alive.
Its bad enough with what they did to machine guns, silencers, "destructive devices", "assault rifles", and god knows what else. If there is a benevolent God out there, then one day people will realise that we've had enough, and use the guns we still have to win our freedom back. The vulture will feast on the corpses of the gungrabbers as they hang from the trees like fruit, and America shall rejoice with the melody of gunfire and the potpouri of gunsmoke.
Oh, sorry. I got distracted by my fantastical dreams again.
