Re: Improving home security
theres plenty of things u can do to increase home security. one being obvious get a big dog. another thing is hanging old pans, tin cans, metal chimes from wires around dark spots by your house. places where people would walk to get into a window or somthing. another thing is if u dont have children, elderly, or pets, find a window that u think they might come though. then grab a piece of reasonably thick play wood about the size of a baby bed. then sharpen up some nails and run them though the board. put them under the window. in the dark u wont be able to see. staple razors to a window cill facing up. use a simple door stop on doors u dont normaly come in and out of. like back doors. along with locking it. another is the sledge hammer trick. if youve seen nightmare on elm street 1 then ull know what im talking about. id have to know what type of nieborhood u live in to state anymore.

Re: Improving home security
I live in the middle of a predominately hispanic and black neighborhood. Were the only white family around, and its relatively a rundown area.I have a dog , I just dont know if i should keep him in the house to protect him against people throwing laced food at him, or keeping him outside to protect my porch and car.

Re: Improving home security
hmmm i dont think they would waist good drugs on a dog. id keep him inside if hes an inside dog out if hes an outside dog. eather or the dog will creat a rukus if anyone comes near the house. im assuming since u have a family that you dont want to do anything i stated. u can buy bars for your windows. id nail the windows shut that u wont be opening. any celler doors should be locked with a thick master lock. make sure theres not any room inbetweent he arch bar and the lock itself. ill try and think of more later

Re: Improving home security
One classic idea, that's kind of cheesy, but that I wouldn't be ashmed of implenting is this...The 'ol cans attached to string booby trap! Make sure that if the intruder(s) trip or drag the string, that the cans will be able to skid across a surface that'll make a lot of noise.
I just thought of another idea. Install perimenter lights around your property that are either heat or light activated. Any home improvement store will have them and they truly are awesome. To this day I know when there's a cat walking on our walls in the backyard.

Re: Improving home security
Simple locks on windows and and doors can easily be replaced with better locks and dead bolts quite cheaply so that would be a start. Getting a basic alarm isn't very expensive either- my alarm is a motion sensor that activates an alarm if triggered. You turned the sensor on and off by using a little remote control that you take with you when you leave the house. The whole set (that you have to install yourself) only cost me 20 (around $30) and it was perfect for my flat. For a house you may need two or three in key areas but it still comes out fairly cheap.

SilentBlob:
I have the same problem in my neighborhood, mine is mainly black and right behind us live a family of crack dealers. I have a six foot fence(harder to jump over) and two dobermans. My male took out the neighborhood pitbull and then went after the owner so after that noone from this neighborhood has really messed with the house. My female is so psychotic that I am the only person that can get near her and noone approaches me with her around, she try to go through my truck windows if someone is even walking behind me. I love that dog. Don't worry about poisoned food, most people aren't that bright, they will just shoot them. Sorry but it is the truth. Be sure to have two dogs, one for outside and one for inside, and rotate them so the outside one doesn't feel like the other one more loved, it will make a difference in the level of protection they will give you. And if you have people come over, don't let them pet your dogs and say how cute they are because the dogs will assoicate strangers as being good. I like this breed because they work as a team. One distracts you from the front and the other silently comes up from behind and latches onto the leg or jumps on you.I dunno if they all do this but mine do and it is an effective deterrant for theives.

Re: Improving home security
You really cannot beat a well trained dog that will bark at the first sign of trouble, a decent flashlight and a firearm.
Odds are someone is going to break into your home when it is vacant and no one is around. Giving them more time on their hands to search for valuables.
Someone who is breaking into your home when you are present is nothing short from a home invasion. Defend yourself with any means available to you.

Re: Improving home security
Some of these ideas just might help you...
The first is to buy quality locks. A deadbolt lock can go a long way, and if you have locks, you might as well use them. When you leave your house, make sure all of your windows and doors are locked, and be sure to use the deadbolt. A deadbolt is hard to get past.
Second is to clean up your property, if it isn't already. This gives the sense that you may have an alarm, and are "more decent" than the rest of the neighborhood. This can be a turnoff.
Install an alarm system if you can afford it, or, if you can't, set up alarm stickers and signs, but don't over do it.
Place your lights, TV and/or radio on a timer, so that this may give the impression that you are home, when you actually aren't.
If you can afford it, set up an alarm system. I know, I already said that.
Buy some of those fake soda or aerosol cans, and put them to use. Store jewelry, money, and stuff like that in there. I have one of those miniature pocket pistols, that actually works, in a false aerosol can.
If you own your own home, then build a secret room into your house. It needn't be very big, but you can make it damn big if need be, and if you have the concealment and building skills. I have one in my house, that took me a month to build, but I have enough room in there to store long firearms (rifles and shotguns) as well as a TV, and a safe. I could even sleep in there if I needed to.
Just some ideas, hope they help.

Re: Improving home security
sharpened bamboo sticks stuck in the ground around the perimeter of your property and a 3 foot deep trench 3 feet wide on both sides of the spikes and more spikes in the trench wrap each spike with barbed wire and also around the entire property set up a 12 foot electrified fence with barbed wire at the top people will think your nuts and wont fuck with you
cleaning the place up will make them think you have money and your more likely to get robbed
you could get lots of black powder and make a bunch of mines and set them up in your backyard so if someone comes on your property they get blown to hell it does make a mess but it would be effective

Re: Improving home security
fishing line is actually a very effective tripwire in the dark, and eaqually suited to setting off explosives or a trap, or tripping someone.

This sort of thing with explosives was common in the Vietnam war with the Communists; they would attack grenades to vines in the forest - a passing GI would move the vine out of the way, then...BOOM!
