Re: sound-proofing a room
not play so loud ...
well you can rip out the dry wall and pack the walls super tight with fiber glass and get a very thick door most likly oak and get a door sweep that should keep in alot os the sound but some will still escape a little

Re: sound-proofing a room
Get a bunch of thick blankets and hang them on your walls. They make acoustic deadening panels, but they aren't very cheap. Most of the better methods would involve alot of money or alot of work, so the blankets would probably be the easiest way.
With drums though, it would be tough to be very effective regardless of the method used. Maybe you could just wait until they both leave fore some reason to play.

Re: sound-proofing a room
Have you ever seen a quiet room? The ones that NASA or one of the sound testing companies use? You need to break up the sound wave before it strikes the wall and transfers the energy to the house itself.
It would be a lot of work, but think of it this way; if you took about a thousand egg cartons and used the bottoms, tack/glue/tape them to your walls leaving no flat space where the sound wave can strike. When the wave hits the small cups and small peaks of the egg carton it breaks up, effectively dampening it, much like the way radar bounces off a F-117 stealth fighter.
Playing out in the garage might not be such a bad idea either.

Re: sound-proofing a room
actually, put the egg cartons on he ceiling. Then put one of those shower curtains all around the walls. Make sure the curtains are not touching the walls.

Re: sound-proofing a room
Hanging thick stuff on the walls would take care of the mid range and treble sounds. However the bass travels through structures.
Think, when someone is playing loud music (ie. next door) what do you hear more, bass or treble/mid range. The bass of cource.
The best solution would be to have the drum kit sitting on some-thing that isolates it from the floor and thus the structure of the house. Then hang thick stuff on your walls.

Re: sound-proofing a room
i play in the garage, it can still be annoying though, you can buy that good soundproofing foam you hang on your walls, but it can be pricy, i jsut play when noones around, but then again my parents dont care about the sound.

Re: sound-proofing a room
here's a different approach: deaden the sound of your drums. tie a sock over the bass pedal and use t-shirts to cover the drums and cymbals --- ---

.
This is the biggest mistake about the eggcartons yes they break the sound wave but they dont STOP it, egg cartons are great for upgrading the acoustic (?) in your room (your drums will sound better!) the best thing to do is (+the most expensive) is to make a room in a room (floating room) this will stop all sound to the outside world you could make a room in a room with realy thick blankets and hang them from the ceiling to the floor, put somthing underneath your drums etc. just use anything you can find to isolate your room but never make contact with the walls(deadkennedy). and use the egg cartons for the acoustics in the room. room in a room sound proof spray!
