Default Real Sunday Afternoon DIY...

Right- shelfing. I know how to put up shelves with brackets and with little supports and things and i am quite good at making such things from scratch out of wood etc. I need to put up new shelves in my newly decorated bedroom but i don't want brackets or supports. I've seen shelves that seem to be stuck to the wall with no supports but i can't work out why they are so sturdy. Does anyone know how to make those sort of shelves and/or they are stuck to the wall.

I'm almost positive that they arn't glued on because of the sheer weight they can handle

You are maybe talking about shelves with supports attached to cleats? Its a thought.

I'm not sure about cleats. These shelves look like they are stuck to the walls with no visable supports but they are really sturdy. I can put my full weight on one and it won't come of the wall. They have them at my office and i think they would look good in my bedroom but i can't think of how they stay on the wall.

Why don't you just wait till everyone has gone and take them home with you? The Best things in life are free!

I suppose that i could steal them....

OR I could always keep my job safe by not stealing from the office (well the stationary is free right?) and work out how the hell they stay on the wall so that i could build them myself.

DIY= Do It Yourself. In England that means shelving. And i want to Shelve goddamn it

You could just wait until everyone leaves and take one apart and see how it works.

Im pretty sure they are post stuck into the wall then inside the wall there is a big screw or clamp to keep them sturdy, that what i think!

Erm

I went down to B&Q (sort of like a big hardware store) and i asked a few "Assistants" about these types of shelf but because they are all 15 year old 3.60 an hour cretins they all looked at me with glazed over eyes. Grrr, i guess i will just have to use normal shelves.

Yes exactly what k devil said drill holes into your wall studs of masonry, in the case of masonry secure your steel rods with epoxy. With wood just put the rods snugly into the holes, they should go all 4 inches into the stud. then drill holes into planks and slide them on. Getting the measurements all right will be tricky but this is the only way I can see to get that kind of strength that isn't supported (cantilever).
Elaborate on the english version of DIY for me, I'm curious, do you really mean building shelves? hey tell us what you came up with when you get it done.

Theres this sort of DIY tradition in England. It involves a sunday afternoon, a bloke, some wood, some tools and a bit of know how. Then you retire to your shed/garage/garden to build whatever the hell you need/want/have been pestered for. Then you put it where its supposed to go- you admire your handywork for 15 minutes or so no matter how crap it looks/is. Thats about it expect what i make is normally good looking and/or works.

Cheers for the ideas people. Although tommorow is monday i have the day off so i may get around to trying the above methods

There are these portable shelves that go in the corner of a room. Underneeth you turn a nob and these sharp blades come out into the wall and hold it in place. They are quite strong.

I finally got around to starting these shelves today. I used tryp's idea but slightly in reverse. I bought 2 planks of wood (4cm x 20cm x 120cm each) from the local carpenters yard, then i had a flash of inspiration and went to SeaLife the local marine supplies shop and bought a long metal rod thats 2cm in diametre (its cylandrical and supposed to be for boom supports or something) and four 0.5cm thick circles (3cm in diameter) of metal (used for at sea repairs apparently). I took all these directly to my shed and started the first shelf. I marked the wood on the 120 x 4 sides the locii between the longest edges (2cm from the top which is exactly 2cm from the bottom) and then i marked 30cm in from each the other 2 edges.
Ie
code:
<---------120cm--------->
<30> <----60cm----> <30>
________________________
| | | |
|____|______________|____|4cm
| | | |
|____|______________|____|

Then, where each line crossed i boared a 2cm wide hole 15cm deep. Then i boared a 3cm wide hole in the same place as the other holes but this one was only a little over 0.5cm deep.
Next i drilled 4 4mm wide holes on each metal disc and used wet and dry paper to rough up one side of the discs.(it looks like a disc if you quint a bit, * are the holes, # is the roughed up bit):
code:
    _____
/ \
/ * # * \
| ### |
\ * # * /
\_____/

Now i cut the metal rod into 4 15cm long rods and used wet and dry paper to rough up one end of each.
Next i soldered the rough end of each rod onto the roughed up part of each disc to hold it in place and i then used WG weld (cold welding putty) to fix each rod firmly onto each disc. I ended up with this (disc is the vertical line on the left, rod is horizontal):
code:
 _
| |
| |_________________
| |_________________)
| |
|_|

Then i used the wet and dry paper again to really rough up the rod and disc front.
I tested this on my previously boared wood and it fits perfectly. The rods slot into the 15cm deep holes and the discs sit in the 0.5 cm deep hole perfectly. Then i painted the wood blue (to match my decor). Tommorow i will use masonary screws to fix the disc-rods to my walls (2 rods 55cms from each other and then another 2 rods 55cm away from each other) and i will then cover the disc-rods in epoxy and slide the wood onto them. The shelves should go flush up against the wall and there will be no visable supports!
Hurrah

Chunkmiester
Thanks for the input, they should look really good

Holy crap bunghole- did you slit your wrists or something?

And currently- no i can't get pictures. I would first have to aquire a camera (fairly accomplishable), then i would have to get hold of a scanner (near impossible, i don't have one nor do i have access to one) and then i would have to host the picture somewhere (i don't have any webspace what so ever- my isp doesn't give me any and i can't be arsed to go through the whole process of signing up for one).

Chunkmiester
So then bung- how did you get all that blood there?

It looks pretty bloody eh? People tend to think somebody died in my sink or something when i show the picture. I had a bloody nose and went to the bathroom to take care of it, and some blood dripped in the sink. It looked cool so i just let it bleed for a few minutes, to see what I would end up with. It was kind of a spur of the moment thing. Conveniently I had a digital camera nearby, and I have a server to host on. If you ever need to put a pic on the web just email me, I can host for you.
