Ack! That Stuff is dangerous! I have read that it can be as deadly as moonshine. Can cause blindness and death. Although some say it gives a distinct buzz.

Hemingway and Van Gogh drank Absinthe, and look what happened to them.

A friend of mine's older brother has bought absinthe in England when they used to live there. She showed it to me, and it was green, and smelled like shit, but it was absinthe nonetheless. I'm pretty sure you can find it online to buy, if nothing else. I haven't seen too much about making it, etc...but I know it's just distilled wormwood...

This is the entire recipe for absinthe.

Ingredients:
1 tsp Wormwood (click here to purchase)
1 cup vodka
2 tbsp peppermint leaves
1/2 cup sugar
lemon juice

Procedure:
Find a container and soak the wormwood in the vodka for 2-3 days.

Strain the vodka from the wormwood. Throw away the wormwood and pour the vodka back into the container.

Add the peppermint and either several drops of lemon juice or a squeeze from a fresh lemon. This will give it some flavor. If you skip out on this step, your drink will be bitter.

Let this concoction steep for 7-10 days. This will be more palatable with time. Does anyone want to try a 30-day steeping period?

Strain the peppermint, pour into a glass on the rocks, dilute with water, and sweeten with a sugar cube. Generally, an absinthe spoon should be used to hold the sugar cube. Then, allow the absinthe to run over the sugar until the cube is entirely gone. Your end result should be a milky white beverage.

Preps suck.

Absinthe was banned in the United States because it supposedly caused brain damage but so does everclear if you drink enough. If you want to find the stuff I suggest looking into places in Europe (especially eastern europe and russia). About a couple of years ago in Chicago I was hanging with the dude who gave me some absinthe which he claimed was smuggled from Austria.

A friend of mine had some absinthe that he bought in Spain. It was pretty good, but it was really strong. I think it was something like 120 or 140 proof. I've had it diluted with water and sugar which is fucking brilliant. It tastes like liqourice. I've also consumed absinthe in straight shots. It's not too bad. I'd rather do a shot of absinthe than one of *cheap* whisky, vodka, or tequila. Great drink. Kind of reminds me of Jaegermeister but it seems a little "drier" or more "sharp" maybe... hard to describe taste w/ words and less thick. My friends and I did get really hammered from it, but that's nothing new.

Yeah, Absinthe is good stuff. It smells and tastes horrible but it can be rather interesting. Currently, I get about 8 bottles a shipment in from a contact in Austria. If anyone would like some I might be able to work it out for cheaper than usual.

Absinthe- if drunk correctly can be very enlightening. I have, in the past with a few friends, been able to get a strange hallucinagenic style trip off of it. You see trails and odd, out of place, light effects.
I only did it a few times, but if you want to try it you have to rack up the absinthe in a tall glass. Get a spoonful of sugar and sprinkle it with a couple of drips of absinthe and light it- first by holding the lighter under the spoon and then by holding it to the sugar. Once alight wait until it begins to turn into a white gloopy liquid. Now quickly pour it into your absinthe. It should light the absinthe- wait a minute or two and then vigoursly stir the absinthe until it is no longer on fire. Now, knock it all back at once. If its your first time-try not to puke.

Careful with it though

You can't dismiss something until you try it. Think of how much absinthe is manufactured a year- then think of how many examples there are of absinthe related stupidity. I am sure that i can name a lot more lager related acts of stupidity than you can absinthe related.

Everything is bad for you in large quantities.

Yes, but the stupidity I gain from other sources is temporary, while yours is already apparent and most likely, and hopefully as it is what you deserve for such foolishness, going to last far longer and be far worse.
