Refining H2O2
are there any chemicals or any heating apparatus besides a laboratory hot plate i could use to heat water but not h2o2 to the point of boiling? most of the websites i found just assumed that you already have 30% h2o2, and don't tell you how to refine it.

Re: Refining H2O2
I did this last weekend using a $20 "toastmaster" hotplate sold for home use. Doesn't get as hot as a lab hotplate and doesn't heat up as fast, but it's cheap. I haven't used the H2O2 yet, I'll get to it soon.

Re: Refining H2O2
I belive that H2O2 does not freeze at the normal temperature that H2O does. So i think you can place a glass of over-the-counter Solution of Hydrogen Peroxide in your freezer for a few hours and the purified water will freeze but the H2O2 will not and you will be left with relatively pure H2O2.
If i am wrong someone please correct me.

Re: Refining H2O2
you might now want very pure h2o2, becuase i have heard some bad stories about it. I might be mistaking it with another chemicals, but i am not 100 percent sure.

Re: Refining H2O2
Freezing does work, but I've never tried and I haven't heard of anyone else trying it either. Pure H2O2 can be pretty dangerous, but if its 30% or so it's not too bad (just don't get it on your skin).

Re: Refining H2O2
i thought h2o2 froze at about .3 degrees less than water so it would be nearly impossible to freeze water but not h2o2 with a normal freezer.. i could be wrong though.

Re: Refining H2O2
boil it... keep the temp between 100 C and 152.2 C (152.2 is H202's boiling point)

Re: Refining H2O2
Freezing hydrogen peroxide works but you soon reach a point of diminishing returns. Once you get past 60 percent or so more peroxide freezes than water. You have to watch the material carefully as it freezes, also, and be sure to skim the ice off as soon as it forms. If you freeze it for too long the whole thing freezes solid and you have to start over. Generally speaking, you stop after you've frozen and skimmed of three fourths of the volume of the dilute peroxide. I hear boiling it works better. Make sure you suspend your thermometer in the solution and don't leave it touching the wall of the pot...

Re: Refining H2O2
I don't see why anyone would prefer the hassle of watching H2O2 in the freezer when they could quickly heat it on a stove in a pan between the above temps.

Re: Refining H2O2
Freezing works, but not as well. Boiling it works fine, just as long as it's not high enough to splash all over the place. The temperature will remain around 100*C throughout the boiling process, at least it has in my experiance. The temp was actually at 97*C because I'm at 1700m ASL. I don't know how it would work boiling it past 10% of it's starting volume, I've never tried. So just boil it on the stove and keep it from splashing.
