fuel for spud gun
i'm planning on building a potato gun of some sort in the near future. everyone i know that has made one has always fueled it with hairspray, which eventually fucks up the gun. i don't want to bother with pnumatics. i'm just looking for a better fuel that's pretty safe to use

Re: fuel for spud gun
Some alcohol in a spritzer bottle will work. It has the same active ingredient as hairspray without the adhesives and other impurities to gum up your gun. I use hairspray in most of my cannons simply because I'm lazy and I've mastered the art of metering the stuff out of the can. You can clean the collected gunk off your ignition contacts with a squirt of carb cleaner every fifty shots or so.

Re: fuel for spud gun
it realy wouldnt matter much, a spud gun only costs 10 to 20 bucks. i wouldnt even bother using any other types fuel besides hair spray unless your building a awsome spud gun that u want to keep in great shape.

Re: fuel for spud gun
you are right, spud guns are cheap. but cause it will be my first one, i wanna try some nifty shit. first to make it look cool, i will make it the same diameter for the whole length, puting a smaller diameter tube in the middle of the big one blah blah blah. i'm gunna make sights for it and make it shoulder fireing(like a bazooka sp?) anyways, since i wanna do all that i don't wanna have to bother cleaning it out after 50 shots so that alcohol idea seems pretty good.

everytime i have heard of people using that stuff is to put it in a 2L bottle and add water screw on the cap and run, cause the pressure made by the gas blows the bottle up, BUT i totally forgot that the gas produced was FLAMABLE. oh well. as long as it goes boom, its fine by me

i have heard of people using it, u say u've lost some valves from blowouts, so then butane isn't really safe to use is it? (i meen for the purpose or launching a potato) [This message has been edited by Pissed_Citizen (edited 12-31-2002).]

Re: fuel for spud gun
If you can anchor the valve right (which isn't too tricky - I've done it) butane would be safe enough. You need to have a large chamber or a light touch, though, since butane is very prone to oversaturate your chamber and fail to ignite due to lack of oxygen.

Re: fuel for spud gun
propane! it works really well but is very dangerous. If you put too much in then the gun might explode. That's what happened to mine anywyas. Accually. don't try that.

Re: fuel for spud gun
DONT use acetylene, it will probably explode your gun(PVC) or starting fluid because it is a solvent and eats away at PVC, ..try this link, very good http://www.aaroncake.net/spuds/boom.asp

Re: fuel for spud gun
acetone is a solvent.
Just use some deoderant or something. Away with all these other fuels that exploded violently destroying your cannon. Just use a flammable gas....
