obtaining Potassium Nitrate
can i buy it as a fertilizer? i read that if i get a bag that says 13.75 - 0 - 46 on the front this will be almost pure. How can i make it pure from this???
and I KNOW that it is sold as saltpeter but the place i called wanted $6 for 125g! I'm very cheap and won't pay that much.
I'm making some BP.

Re: obtaining Potassium Nitrate
An online fertilizer place Im looking at sells (13.75-0-44.5), 50lbs for $19.30. How different is that? http://www.hydro-gardens.com/fertcomp.htm edit: I have to get it online because there are no stores that sell it around here... If I get that I'll probably get 50lbs of AN also, but I imaging shipping costs would be pretty high... [This message has been edited by EP (edited 12-13-2002).]

Re: obtaining Potassium Nitrate
Note that KNO3 can also be found in reasonable purity as 'Grants' or 'Green Light' stump remover at Ace Hardware and Home Depot., respectively. It will cost about $5 per pound.

yep yep: http://krimzonpyro.com/ep/projectsdevicesdir/kno3.html
edit: if you look at the NPK numbers on those bags in the pics, they are 13-0-44 and (other hard to read so this is a guess) 15.6-0-38.3

Re: obtaining Potassium Nitrate
somethin like 454 grams in a pound. the impureites in stumpremover are some kind of bacteria. It helps eat away the stump. You are supposed to throw the stump remover on the stump while it is on fire. The nitrates help it burn a lot faster, i think.

Re: obtaining Potassium Nitrate
No, read the directions on the bottle. It says to drill holes and put in the stump remover. At least that's what it said on mine.

Re: obtaining Potassium Nitrate
You know, you could just buy it straight from a chemical supplier. My two suspect looking friends and i rang around our area and bought a 25kg bag of potassium nitrate for about Aus$20, i think. Anyway, it was pretty cheap.

Re: obtaining Potassium Nitrate
To use the fertilizer in bp, you'd have to ball mill it, once it is good and ground up you can probubly just use it as the KNo3 in the formula for making it. To get the impurities out you'd have to some chemical shit I'm not sure of, but unless theres a bunch of impurities it may not be that nessisary.

Re: obtaining Potassium Nitrate
KNO3 is water soluble. Meaning that you can dissolve it in water, filter out the leftover crap, dry out the liquid and have pretty pure KNO3. It's probably not worth it unless you need really, really pure.
