Det Fuse
Althoe this has very little practical use i made some det fuse out of ap (kinda like a mini version of det cord). I first tryed making it with cling wrap, which exploded but not to powerful. Then i used alfoil. With about 2inch of fuse i lit the end with a burning skewer. A massive CRACK and pieces of alfoil no bigger then glitter was blasted in all directions, my ears rang and i just stood there. I looked at the wooden table it was sitting on to see a dint where it was sitting....but not much else.
Now useing alfoil with AP is not a very smart idea since AP is made with HCL and they are nasty togther. Soon i might try wrapping it around things, but hey even if its not very useful the way it is it sure makes one hell of a firecracker

Re: Det Fuse
If you want to wrap it around things AP putty is defenitely the way to go.

Re: Det Fuse
I've never had the Nitrocellulose to make AP putty with before, but I might as well try now. That IS what is in AP putty and I'm not off my rocker, right?

Re: Det Fuse
Yes, AP putty is acetone peroxide and nitrocellulose. I've seen people make homebrew detcord with acetone peroxide and small diameter aquairium tubing. Just melt off one of the ends to close it (while the AP is not inside, obviously) and then fill 'er up via the other end. Aquarium tubing is expensive at pet stores but is sold quite cheap at Home Depot.

Re: Det Fuse
the more powerful version of AP puddy is nitrocellouse and AP, but there are many other waxes and puddys out there that can form a puddy.

Re: Det Fuse
There is a better, cheaper, faster, safer way to make det cord, and it works just as good as the military stuff, only it won't cut telephone poles in two. Other than that it still burns about 8 to 10,000 feet per second.

Re: Det Fuse
Why waste your explosive on 'det fuse' when you can just use regular fuse or electric ignition and a primary? Why would you need 8000-10000 feet per second when electricity travels ... well a LOT faster? Seems like a waste.

Sorry GW, I was in a hurry and had to run out for a minute. It starts with getting some cotton twine, the white stuff, and some meal powder, confectioners sugar, wood alcohol, and masking tape. Meal powder is very fine ground up black powder or you can make it from the base chemicals, charcoal, sulphur and pot. nitrate. It needs to be a very fine powder, like flour. You mix the meal powder with the sugar and wood alcohol to make a slurry, kind of watery, then soak the twine in it for a day or so. When you take the twine out of the slurry, drag it through a container of meal powder so to coat the outside of the twine with powder. After that you need to dry it on a rack until it is very dry, couple of days at least. Then you lay out a length of tape, sticky side up and lay the twine on it, then fold the tape over to seal it in. Making it in 6 foot lengths is about the easiest, you can always tape two or more together if you need a longer piece. If you let the twine dry long enough, when you light the end of a piece there will be a poof! and the whole thing will have burnt.

Re: Det Fuse
Yeah, thats quickmatch. We're talking det. cord. Static, why don't you use your PETN? Should be much better. The reason you make it is not to use it as fuse, but to wrap it around things. Example: Removal of trees, poles, posts, etc. You can also wrap it around containers of gas or similar. Mad FAE.

Re: Det Fuse
We need some clarification here...
quickmatch: blackmatch in paper to make it burn faster. used as shell leader and to connect multiple fuses. burns a few hundred fps.
detcord: plastic/woven cord with a HE filler. used for connecting and detonating multiple HE charges all at once. also used for fun things like wrapping a jug of gas. being an HE, it goes fast, I think around 6km/s.

Re: Det Fuse
Hmm.. never thought of wrapping some around a gas can or the like. Interesting. Well, still seems like a few (4-6) well placed charges would do the trick as well as a cord.

Re: Det Fuse
I think the main point is that detcord is a high explosive. In addition to initiating other high explosives, which quickmatch cannot do, it can be used as an explosive or cutting charge all its own.
