how d'you make a smokescreen?
is this flash powder i hear about basically a smokescreen or what? How do you make one? and does it fuck up your lungs?
also include how you deploy such a device.

Re: how d'you make a smokescreen?
thats cool. Does anyone know anything about ninja egg grenades? they were used as smokescreens and made out of natural stuff you could find lying around. I've heard them called flash pods (thats why i thought the flash thing).
And the powder was put in a hollow egg shell thant exploded on impact, you didnt even need to ignite it.

Re: how d'you make a smokescreen?
Flash powder is an explosive, not a smoke compound. Theatrical smokebombs and such often have a flash component for an impressive light when they go off. In terms of useful pyrotechnics, though, it's best to keep the two apart. An effective smoke mixture is the classic potassium nitrate and sugar. You can use a napathalene based mixture, as detailed on Rat's site above, or any of a number of more exotic mixes. The trouble I've found with most smoke mixes is that they require exotic (by homebrew pyrotech standards) materials to make them work. Professional smoke mixes are potassium perchlorate and lactose based, I think, but I'd have to check.

Re: how d'you make a smokescreen?
Here's an idea. In the 60/40 KNO3/sugar mix, replace 10-20 units of the sugar with powdered rubber. Burning rubber makes black smoke (as shown in tire-fires) that probably isn't too good to be around.
I would try this, but I'm out of KNO3 at the moment and still waiting for my order to come in from ssaerospace. I might just try a garden shop in the mean time. The last garden shop guy said he had no idea what potassium nitrate was. :/

Re: how d'you make a smokescreen?
I have a friend who made half a trashcan full of the KNO3/sugar stuff. He spent about $200 on stump remover and sugar to do it.

Re: how d'you make a smokescreen?
200 dollars! damn. i have never saw it, but people say that they have saw 50 pound bags of potassium nitrate for 45 dollars, and the sugar would be no problem.

Re: how d'you make a smokescreen?
In keeping with the original questions..... "How do you make one (smokescreen)? and does it fuck up your lungs?" ... A little trivial and not so trivial info.....
Diesel fuel smoke -- Used in smoke generators (injecting into a hot exhaust manifold)
Fog-oil (mineral oil) Smoke -- Used in smoke generators (injecting into a hot exhaust manifold)
Red Phosphorous Smoke -- used in various matrices (such as felt, polymer epoxy binders, and more commonly butyl rubber) in explosive munitions.
Hexachloroethane Smoke (aka HCE or HC) -- The smoke is produced by combusting HC with Zinc oxide which forms Zinc Chloride.
White Phosphorous Smoke -- White Phosphorous (WP) smoke is used by the military in mortar-artillery shells and grenades to block the transmission of visible light, infrared light, or microwaves. It is the most effective obscuring smoke to defeat thermal imagery systems. Phosphorous smoke is generated from a phosphorous-containing flammable matrix (see red phosphorous above) that burns to form solid particles of phosphorous pentoxide (P2O5) in air. P2O5 reacts with moisture to form orthophosphoric acid (H3PO4).
Brass Smoke -- Grenades containing brass flakes composed of 70% copper and 30% zinc results in the release of these flakes into the atmosphere to block detection of infrared waves for thermal imagery systems.
Titanium Dioxide Smoke -- TiO2 is the proposed major component of a training grenade (XM82) under development by the US Army. Explosion of grenades containing TiO2 will release TiO2 particles that block detection of light waves in the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Graphite Smoke -- Graphite flakes in 'smoke' munitions are used by the military to block electromagnetic waves that an enemy might detect and use to target troops in the field.
*****The traditional smoke grenades*****
The colored smoke munition is composed of a pyrtotechnic mixture of fuel and dye, with a cooling agent sometimes being added to prevent excessive decomposition of the dye. The heat produced by the fuel volatilizes the dye, which then condenses outside the grenade to form the colored smoke. The fuel is formulated as a mixture of an oxidizing agent and a combustible material. The burning time can be regulated by adjusting the proportions of oxidant and combustible material and by using coolants.
Without considering the 'exotic' dyes in them there's basically two formulations found in the US smoke grenade stockpile... an old formulation and a new.
In the old M18 grenades, the colored dyes were mixed with sulfur, potassium chlorate, and sodium bicarbonate (acts as a coolant), with optional amounts of a mixture of kerosene and tricalcium phosphate for control of dusting and caking.
In the new M18 grenades, sugar is used as the fuel instead of sulfur, and magnesium carbonate is used as a coolant instead of sodium bicarbonate.
This information culled from: The Toxicity of Military Smokes and Obscurants, Volume I
The Toxicity of Military Smokes and Obscurants, Volume II
The Toxicity of Military Smokes and Obscurants, Volume III
Does it fuck up your lungs?? Depending on which 'screen' you're exposed to, the answer (in varying degrees) is yes.
If anyone is actually interested in reading these books, which are primarily toxicology books, give a holler and I'll post links to them. Hope it wasn't too boring....

Re: how d'you make a smokescreen?
these are all good recipes which i will test out.
but the best smokescreen is one you dont need to ignite, then you can make a speedy getaway. Anyone know how some of them just explode when they hit the ground?

Re: how d'you make a smokescreen?
just mix some saw dust with gun powder/ flashpowder... (i recon flash cos they dun burn as violent as gun powder)
put them in a ping pong ball an strap a fuse ... make some holes and cover them up with paper so that when ignited, the saw dust and flash powder burn to produse smoke... the holes with paper will too be burned and pressure will not build up in the ball...
thus when saw dust burn quickly there is lots of smoke...
u should use less flash powder in the ball as the flash is only a "catalyst" to speed up the combustion of saw dust...
or use dried chili and cut them into tiny bits and put them with the sawdust into the ball...
the burnt dried chili will produce a choking smoke which cause irritation ... (u will get sore throat from that, and eyes feels like crying... no side effect)
alternatively try pepper powder with sawdust, that would make a smokescreen cum tear gas...

And if you bump into something and the 'eggs' you're carrying are between you and whatever you bumped into, or you have to drop to the ground and roll into some low bushes for cover.....???

Re: how d'you make a smokescreen?
LOL!!! Fair enough, haha!
I believe today's ninja would be better served by using technology to his advantage. If the ninjas of yesteryear had access to the smoke grenades of today, don't you think they'd of snatched them up to use in a heartbeat?
And since many of the 'ninja-ops' or whatever were geared to night time execution, the whole 'flash-pod' thing implies (to me anyway) that the intention wasn't really a smokescreen, but a flash to temporarily disable their night vision. The smoke was likely a byproduct of the flash.

Re: how d'you make a smokescreen?
I wouldn't be surprised if they did, but any genuine composition is likely lost to obscurity. So good luck in yer search and all...
I still suggest that rather than research for their formulations you take advantage of what's available today. Against the average shmoe, you'll still be leagues ahead.
And remember that all ninja movies (especially ones made in the orient) are based on theatrics, not fact.

Re: how d'you make a smokescreen?
I'll take any formular that fits the criteria
1: Explodes on impact with no ignition needed
2: makes shitloads of smoke. And by shitloads i mean alot
3: can be stored in small egg-size containers for a long time.
