i have no weight to weight the amount of KNO3 or S for BP
LOl the topic is confusing..but
apart from using weight.......can i make BP by mixing those thing in parts??? Like how many Tablespoons for nitrate how many spoons for sulphur......and so on i just can't get my hands on a Gram weighing machine

Volumes will work fine in this case, teaspoons, measuring cups, whatever.

Re: i have no weight to weight the amount of KNO3 or S for BP
I got an old Recipie book that uses 3 cups of KN03, 2 cups of charcoal, and 1/2 cup of sulphur. You may want to scale it down a bit

Yeah, mesureing by volume works good too, but if you really want a cheap scale, buy a diet scale at wal mart for 4 dollars.

Actually tryp that isn't true. Charcoal has much greater volume then potassium nitrate and i think sulfur does too.

I think you mean density, CTR

Re: i have no weight to weight the amount of KNO3 or S for BP
So far, every single pyotechnic formula I have seen is weight only. The density varies widely with some chemicals like charcoal which is very light for a solid. If you want your products to... NOT suck, then you'll need a scale. (which is what most call a weighing machine)

Have you ever heard of AP? CTR

The first thing you must always have is your equipment and safety gear...Dont try and improvise...You take alot of safety away if you dont have the proper tool....When I was first starting out I bought a 200g .1inc scale for 20 bucks at ebay...I now have a My Weigh i1200

AP is not a pyrotechnic formula. Now if you somehow had KNO3, charcoal and sulfur all in pure liquid form you could measure by volume if you knew the density... Weight is used for a reason in these kinds of measurements.

Re: i have no weight to weight the amount of KNO3 or S for BP
For the most part measuring any solid by volume will be innacurate, and may cause the end product to fail to work.
Anything powdered (which is every solid ingredient in pyrotechnics, generally) can have a varying density - Even among batches of the same ingredient. The volume of a material will vary with particle size, how densely it's packed, humidity, quality, and so on. Thus it is best to use weight measurements at all times rather than volume.
Weight measurements will rarely translate directly into volume measurements. Once you've worked out all the densities and particle sizes to convert weight to volume accurately you might as well just buy a scale and weigh it...

Re: i have no weight to weight the amount of KNO3 or S for BP
if you are in highschool (or any school for that matter) your school's science room should have an like 10 scales like that. they arent easy to rip off. i took one, but i sold it to buy tony hawk 4 :P
one day when you guys are doing an experiment or sumthin look in the closets and droors and stuff. if the teacher catches you tell em you thought this was where the supplies were. after you locate them, the next day just gank one and casually slip it into your back-pack. dont let anyone see it or you are screwed.

and please dont blow yourself up when tying to make bp
and another thing, why make bp when you can make flash powder so much easier, and in some cases alot cheaper?

theres a site called herbalsmokeshops.com that i get little scales from. they are two bucks and they are accurate enough to make my black powder

Lol that is my phrase! But BP has many more uses than flash powder...

www.herbsmoke.com sells a little nifty scale too but I wonder how accurate it is.

Re: i have no weight to weight the amount of KNO3 or S for BP
AP doesn't count anyway. Besides, it uses liquid reactants (and catalyst for that matter). Liquids are measured (usually) in milliliters, and a milliliter is the volume measurement of 1 gram of water (if I can remember from science class). So, by my fuzzy logic, when you make AP, you are using indirect weight measurement. Please correct me if I am wrong on that, I know a milliliter is 1cc of water, not 100% sure on the gram part.

Water is 1g/mL. Other liquids are different densities, thus different masses per mL. Acetone is .788g/mL on the other hand.
