Re: Back powder question
Sugar can replace both the charcoal and sulfur, but is generally unsuitable for replacing just one or the other.
As noted, you certainly can make black powder without the sulfur altogether. Reports indicate that this will result in a faster burning but less energetic product.

Re: Back powder question
Grind it into a fine enough powder and you can use it in thick walled salutes and such. It has performance a hair below match heads, usually.

Re: Back powder question
How much sugar did you use? With any substantial amount you'd have an oxidizer deficiency and your end product would suck.

Re: Back powder question
When I was really cheap back in the day I would make 80/20 Kno3 C6H12O6 mix and put them in bottles and duct tape the entire thing with 2 rolls of duct tape and have a really cheap ass M-320....It dosnt work good though because it really dosnt burn fast enough so it will end up burning half of the mix and then exploding...So half the mix wont even burn....

Re: Back powder question
I used about 10 percent sugar, 20 percent charcoal, and 70 percent kno3. It didnt burn as fast as i said in my last post, but it can burn like 2 inches in 1 second.

Re: Back powder question
That's a more reasonable ratio. I can see how that would work.

Re: Back powder question
Yeah, you need a lot of oxidizer when using kno3, except when using magnesium dust, but it does help.
