Re: A few kewl questions
SP burns like shit unless it's contained VERY well (for example, in a gun cartridge). I wouldn't bother trying it in a salute, I'd say hold onto it and maybe make some AP putty with it...
Making charcoal for bp isn't too hard, there are a number of goods sites that show you how. Search on google for "charcoal + cooker + black powder" or something similar, you'll find something useful.

Re: A few kewl questions
Yeah, smokeless powder can be used in salutes. I think that you can only do that with willow wood.

Re: A few kewl questions
Any wood can work Nick. Hardwoods burn slower than softwoods however. Willow is soft, so fast charcoal from it makes fast bp. Slower burning charcoal is better if you want sparks for a rocket tail or something.
And you don't just burn the wood, you "cook" it without it actually burning...the pages you will find if you do a good search will tell you how to do it...

Re: A few kewl questions
Most of the time, smokeless powder will just pop the end caps off an M80 type salute. I've heard of matchhead powder working in a cratermaker/cob device, so I'd say smokeless powder will work also. Willow wood is generally accepted as the best for pyrotechnics charcoal due to its quick burn rate as EP said. (Though I'm not totally sure)

Re: A few kewl questions
Smokeless powder will pop out paper end plugs, but I do not know anyone who has used paper end plugs for anything under flash powder and whistle mix. If you have a thick, end plugs made from a hard drying glue, you will be as good as BP.
